Hello, beautiful souls. Welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:00:05.417 --> 00:00:09.997
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and today we're diving into an inspiring episode
00:00:09.997 --> 00:00:14.417
as part of our 40 Days of Spiritual Renewal series.
00:00:14.757 --> 00:00:20.077
This episode is titled, The Strength of Being Rooted in God.
00:00:20.237 --> 00:00:26.857
We'll explore how a life deeply connected to God provides stability,
00:00:27.597 --> 00:00:29.297
growth, and fruitfulness.
00:00:30.077 --> 00:00:36.757
Even in challenging seasons, our foundation is built on his word and promises.
00:00:37.117 --> 00:00:42.637
And when we are firmly rooted, we can flourish against all odds.
00:00:43.077 --> 00:00:49.197
The strength of being rooted, we're going to start out in Jeremiah 17, 7 through 8.
00:00:49.577 --> 00:00:54.217
Yeah, my voice is a little raspy because I'm just getting over some kind of
00:00:54.217 --> 00:00:58.917
bug that was going around. And I do have a story for you that's going to be
00:00:58.917 --> 00:01:02.817
part of our episode, but let me get to it.
00:01:02.957 --> 00:01:06.637
Let's go to Jeremiah 17, 7 through 8.
00:01:06.817 --> 00:01:14.257
It says, but blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
00:01:14.537 --> 00:01:22.297
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out his roots by the streams.
00:01:22.997 --> 00:01:27.797
It does not fear when he comes. It leaves are always green.
00:01:28.097 --> 00:01:34.537
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
00:01:34.817 --> 00:01:38.997
Jeremiah 17, 7 through 8. I'm going to read that again.
00:01:39.177 --> 00:01:45.997
It says, But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
00:01:46.817 --> 00:01:56.077
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the streams.
00:01:57.017 --> 00:02:01.037
It does not fear when heat comes. Its leaves are always green.
00:02:01.057 --> 00:02:08.517
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit again.
00:02:08.978 --> 00:02:13.898
It says, this imagery of a tree planted by the water is so powerful.
00:02:14.738 --> 00:02:23.018
A tree's strength comes from its roots, and its roots draw nourishment and stability from the water.
00:02:23.718 --> 00:02:29.118
In the same way, our spiritual strength comes from staying deeply rooted in
00:02:29.118 --> 00:02:37.638
God, trusting Him, drawing from His Word, and remaining confident in His promises.
00:02:37.638 --> 00:02:47.398
The tree doesn't fear drought or heat because its roots are connected to a constant source of life.
00:02:47.938 --> 00:02:55.258
Likewise, when we stay connected to God, we can thrive in difficult seasons.
00:02:56.718 --> 00:03:02.898
Reflection question here is how deeply are you rooted in your relationship with God?
00:03:03.158 --> 00:03:06.818
I think this is a good point for a testimony here.
00:03:07.418 --> 00:03:13.158
When I read that statement here in Jeremiah 17, in verse 7 through 8,
00:03:13.258 --> 00:03:20.338
it says, But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
00:03:20.538 --> 00:03:25.018
The other day, you know, I was getting my car tuned up and getting it ready
00:03:25.018 --> 00:03:27.418
just because I'd use it for my work.
00:03:28.078 --> 00:03:31.638
And I felt a little sickness trying to come on, right?
00:03:32.358 --> 00:03:36.998
And by the end of the day, it was in full-blown sickness, right?
00:03:36.998 --> 00:03:39.978
I was like, oh my gosh, I feel it coming through my body.
00:03:40.698 --> 00:03:47.578
And my first inkling wasn't this confidence in the Lord.
00:03:47.838 --> 00:03:51.558
It was running to Walmart to get some Theraflu.
00:03:52.018 --> 00:03:56.058
And I thought that was hilarious as I tell you why it was funny.
00:03:56.358 --> 00:03:58.438
Because I was like, wow, wow.
00:03:59.130 --> 00:04:03.530
And then I'm in bed for a couple of days, just aching and pain.
00:04:03.710 --> 00:04:05.970
You know how you get that body aches and pain.
00:04:06.310 --> 00:04:10.790
And then I finally had enough strength to go get to my prayer closet.
00:04:11.630 --> 00:04:18.350
And I took my communion with the Lord and I just prayed and rebuked the fever that I had on my body.
00:04:18.790 --> 00:04:25.310
And it was gone immediately. Just like the Bible said, Jesus rebuked that fever
00:04:25.310 --> 00:04:32.990
and it was gone immediately. And I realized that my confidence at that time wasn't in the Lord.
00:04:33.270 --> 00:04:35.130
It was in the Theraflu.
00:04:36.130 --> 00:04:40.590
And I was like, I could have been well a couple of days ago if I would have
00:04:40.590 --> 00:04:45.270
just put my confidence in the Lord instead of running to the store.
00:04:45.490 --> 00:04:50.390
And so that was a lesson learned right there. And so I just wanted to share
00:04:50.390 --> 00:04:51.790
that testimony with you.
00:04:51.950 --> 00:04:59.150
So how deeply are you rooted in your relationship with God? Where do you run to when things get bad?
00:04:59.190 --> 00:05:04.870
Do you run directly to God or do you run to Walmart and get your Theraflu?
00:05:05.870 --> 00:05:10.310
That was funny to me. And as I was sitting there praying this morning,
00:05:10.550 --> 00:05:16.050
the Lord said, I want you to count on me for everything, every little thing.
00:05:16.490 --> 00:05:21.790
Just trust in me for the little thing. A lot of times I go to God with the big things.
00:05:22.350 --> 00:05:26.490
I figure, you know, I can fight off this cold. I can fight off this cough.
00:05:26.770 --> 00:05:31.030
No, no, no. You come to me for everything.
00:05:31.850 --> 00:05:34.370
Don't trust in your own understanding.
00:05:35.330 --> 00:05:38.870
Stay connected and rooted with God. Amen?
00:05:39.350 --> 00:05:45.630
Okay, let's keep going. Another scripture that reflects this is Psalms 1, 1 through 3.
00:05:45.990 --> 00:05:50.490
It says, blessed is the one. I know I'm a little emotional this morning because
00:05:50.490 --> 00:05:51.970
it's fresh off the press.
00:05:52.570 --> 00:06:00.610
Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on his law day and night.
00:06:00.870 --> 00:06:07.270
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit
00:06:07.270 --> 00:06:10.750
in season and whose leaf does not wither.
00:06:11.470 --> 00:06:14.290
Whatever they do prospers.
00:06:14.956 --> 00:06:20.936
So we have another way that when we stay connected to God, that whatever we
00:06:20.936 --> 00:06:26.316
do prosper, that our fruit will always be ripe in the season.
00:06:26.576 --> 00:06:29.716
Our leaf will never, never wither.
00:06:30.016 --> 00:06:36.296
And whatever we do. So when we meditate on God's word and make it the foundation
00:06:36.296 --> 00:06:40.036
of our lives, we bear spiritual fruit.
00:06:40.036 --> 00:06:49.556
That fruit might be peace in a storm, joy in a hardship, kindness in a world that often lacks it.
00:06:49.756 --> 00:06:58.116
How about this rebuking of a fever, rebuking of a fever when you just go to the Lord? Amen.
00:06:58.756 --> 00:07:05.236
Just as a tree can't grow without good soil and water, We can't grow spiritually
00:07:05.236 --> 00:07:09.936
without spending time in God's presence and his word.
00:07:10.476 --> 00:07:16.776
God looks forward to meeting us wherever your schedule is that you meet with him.
00:07:18.356 --> 00:07:23.736
What spiritual fruit is God calling you to produce in this season?
00:07:23.936 --> 00:07:24.876
Isn't that interesting?
00:07:25.576 --> 00:07:30.056
He's causing you, he's always, God's always forward moving.
00:07:30.796 --> 00:07:36.756
So what is that fruit that he's having you to produce in this season?
00:07:37.256 --> 00:07:42.096
Life isn't always easy. Storms come, droughts happen.
00:07:42.376 --> 00:07:47.336
But when our roots go deep into God's truth, we can stand firm.
00:07:47.816 --> 00:07:54.436
Think about the tree in Jeremiah 17. It doesn't fear when heat comes or worry
00:07:54.436 --> 00:07:58.756
during a drought because it's connected to his source of life.
00:07:59.850 --> 00:08:05.190
Psalms 112, 6 reads, the righteous will never be shaken.
00:08:05.490 --> 00:08:08.770
They will be remembered forever.
00:08:09.310 --> 00:08:14.090
It's like when you're standing firm with God, he said, you will never be shaken.
00:08:14.110 --> 00:08:16.250
You will be remembered forever.
00:08:16.450 --> 00:08:20.770
When we're rooted in God, we won't be shaken by life's challenges.
00:08:21.070 --> 00:08:27.510
Instead, we'll remain steadfast, knowing that he is our source of strength.
00:08:28.570 --> 00:08:32.610
What strength, what, let me find it again.
00:08:34.150 --> 00:08:42.350
What storms have you recently faced and how did your faith keep you grounded?
00:08:43.050 --> 00:08:50.090
What storms have you recently faced and how did your faith keep you grounded?
00:08:50.970 --> 00:08:56.790
You know, I think my, usually, I'll say, usually when I get down with the flu
00:08:56.790 --> 00:09:00.030
or whatever that bug was, it usually takes me about five to seven days.
00:09:00.350 --> 00:09:05.230
I can say three days, two and a half days, I was up and at it.
00:09:05.850 --> 00:09:09.790
And so knowing that I was like, I need to get to prayer. I need to get to prayer.
00:09:10.210 --> 00:09:14.430
And so my whole heart was trying to get there. As soon as I got strength enough
00:09:14.430 --> 00:09:16.890
to get to prayer, I was like, boom, I'm in my space.
00:09:17.310 --> 00:09:19.770
And immediately I was made whole.
00:09:21.770 --> 00:09:24.950
And so how do we deepen our spiritual roots?
00:09:26.130 --> 00:09:30.950
Some of it is basic stuff. I don't make it, God doesn't make it difficult.
00:09:31.510 --> 00:09:34.530
One, spending daily time in God's word.
00:09:35.050 --> 00:09:43.230
Psalms 119.105 says, Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path.
00:09:43.230 --> 00:09:50.290
Making scripture reading a daily habit to stay connected to God's promises.
00:09:51.479 --> 00:09:56.599
Number two, pray with intention. Prayer is like the water for our souls.
00:09:57.139 --> 00:10:00.759
Spends time talking to God and listening for his guidance.
00:10:01.399 --> 00:10:04.939
And three, surround yourself with a faithful community.
00:10:05.799 --> 00:10:12.739
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27, 17.
00:10:13.199 --> 00:10:18.179
A strong community helps us stay grounded and grow in faith.
00:10:18.859 --> 00:10:23.439
So we spend time in God's word. We're just listening, reading.
00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:28.259
And you get the right translation if you listen to it. I like listening to it on audible.
00:10:30.979 --> 00:10:34.679
It sounds like he's talking directly, giving you direct instructions.
00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:39.279
Pray with intention and surround yourself with a faithful community.
00:10:39.699 --> 00:10:44.419
Here go some decrees to be rooted in God's word.
00:10:44.899 --> 00:10:51.199
So let's repeat these after me. I decree that I am like a tree planted by streams
00:10:51.199 --> 00:10:55.679
of water, firmly rooted in God's word and promises.
00:10:56.039 --> 00:11:03.539
I decree that I will not fear life's challenges because my confidence is in the Lord.
00:11:04.099 --> 00:11:14.719
I decree that I will bear spiritual fruit in every season and prosper in God's purpose for my life.
00:11:15.319 --> 00:11:21.119
So this week I challenge you to spend time meditating on Jeremiah 17, 7-8.
00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:25.619
We are in March now, so we know that it's almost springtime.
00:11:26.039 --> 00:11:27.399
Snow is starting to melt.
00:11:28.379 --> 00:11:33.499
And so reflect on where your roots are planted. Are they firmly planted to God?
00:11:36.019 --> 00:11:38.599
Are there areas where you need to...
00:11:40.289 --> 00:11:43.849
Dig deeper. And we know where we need to dig deeper at, right?
00:11:43.989 --> 00:11:47.569
So are there some areas you're like, you know, I need to plant some seeds over
00:11:47.569 --> 00:11:52.729
here, dig up some weeds over here, water these seeds over here.
00:11:52.909 --> 00:11:57.969
What do I need to do to make my life, you know, make sure that I'm getting more
00:11:57.969 --> 00:12:00.109
rooted and grounded in the word of God.
00:12:00.989 --> 00:12:04.309
Write down one step you'll take this week to deepen your roots,
00:12:04.469 --> 00:12:08.149
whether it's spending more time in scripture, starting a prayer journal,
00:12:08.369 --> 00:12:11.069
or joining a small a small group.
00:12:11.709 --> 00:12:15.849
Find some way to stay connected so that you can continually to grow.
00:12:16.489 --> 00:12:19.769
And excuse me for coughing in the mic. I apologize.
00:12:20.509 --> 00:12:23.349
All right, so let's close this out in prayer. Heavenly Father,
00:12:23.469 --> 00:12:26.129
I thank you for being the source of our strength and stability.
00:12:26.349 --> 00:12:33.409
Teach us to stay deeply rooted in the word and promises so that we can thrive
00:12:33.409 --> 00:12:35.689
no matter what life brings.
00:12:35.949 --> 00:12:42.649
Help us to bear fruit that glorifies you and to remain steadfast in every season.
00:12:42.969 --> 00:12:45.569
In Jesus' name, amen.
00:12:46.069 --> 00:12:49.729
