Hello, and welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:00:04.497 --> 00:00:08.117
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and today we're continuing our journey through
00:00:08.117 --> 00:00:10.717
the 40 Days of Spiritual Renewal series.
00:00:11.197 --> 00:00:15.877
Today's episode is all about resilience and adversity.
00:00:16.257 --> 00:00:22.397
We'll explore how being rooted in faith gives us the strength to stand firm
00:00:22.397 --> 00:00:27.537
and bloom, even when life's storms comes our way.
00:00:27.537 --> 00:00:33.977
If you've been feeling overwhelmed or weary, this message is for you.
00:00:34.837 --> 00:00:40.257
The reality of adversity. So let's start out with an honest truth.
00:00:40.537 --> 00:00:47.557
Life isn't always easy. We face challenges, setbacks, and struggles that test our faith.
00:00:47.777 --> 00:00:53.977
But the good news is that God equips us to be resilient in the face of adversity.
00:00:53.977 --> 00:01:01.357
2 Corinthians 4, 8-9 reads that we are hard pressed on every side,
00:01:01.517 --> 00:01:05.517
but not crushed, perplexed, but not in despair,
00:01:06.157 --> 00:01:11.157
persecuted, but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed.
00:01:11.157 --> 00:01:19.437
This scripture reminds us that while adversity may come, it doesn't have the final say. I love that.
00:01:19.957 --> 00:01:25.197
Adversity may come, but it does not have the final say.
00:01:25.677 --> 00:01:29.997
Through Christ, we can endure, persevere, and overcome.
00:01:31.017 --> 00:01:36.677
Resilience doesn't mean avoiding hardship. It means standing firm and trusting
00:01:36.677 --> 00:01:40.177
God to carry you through it.
00:01:40.177 --> 00:01:47.337
So let's look at some biblical examples of resilience in the scripture.
00:01:47.677 --> 00:01:51.317
There's two stories, Joseph and Paul.
00:01:52.537 --> 00:01:58.757
Joseph's story happens in Genesis verses chapters 37 through 50.
00:01:59.217 --> 00:02:03.317
If you've been on my podcast long enough, you know that's one of my favorites.
00:02:03.597 --> 00:02:09.877
So if you get a chance, read about Joseph's story. Joseph was betrayed by his
00:02:09.877 --> 00:02:15.157
brothers, sold into slavery, and imprisoned unjustly.
00:02:15.397 --> 00:02:18.897
Yet, he remained faithful to God.
00:02:19.177 --> 00:02:26.157
And in time, God elevated him to a position of leadership in Egypt.
00:02:26.437 --> 00:02:32.737
What was the key here? That he remained faithful to God. So life around you can be shaky.
00:02:33.057 --> 00:02:39.217
Even people can be shaky. But your heart to God should always remain steadfast.
00:02:40.057 --> 00:02:47.937
And so the lesson here is resilience in trusting that God can turn your trials into triumphs.
00:02:48.660 --> 00:02:51.680
That's powerful. Joseph went through a lot.
00:02:51.980 --> 00:02:57.200
And yet in the end, he was just confident enough to say that what you meant
00:02:57.200 --> 00:03:01.340
for evil, God has turned it around for good.
00:03:01.640 --> 00:03:10.500
So you should realize that man does not get the final word in your life.
00:03:10.760 --> 00:03:16.320
God has the final word when you stay and remain faithful to him.
00:03:16.320 --> 00:03:23.520
Let's look at Paul's journey on 2 Corinthians 11, 24 to 28.
00:03:23.780 --> 00:03:28.260
Now, Paul's story, he's in mostly all the New Testament.
00:03:28.600 --> 00:03:33.940
His story is powerful, but Paul faced countless hardships, beatings,
00:03:34.100 --> 00:03:40.420
shipwrecks, imprisonment, but he never wavered in his mission to share the gospel.
00:03:40.420 --> 00:03:43.520
So when God calls you to something.
00:03:45.720 --> 00:03:54.540
You never hear him complaining. He just counted the cost before he took on the job.
00:03:54.820 --> 00:03:58.840
Oh my gosh, that's good stuff, right? Like you ever wanted a new job and you
00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:02.680
get a new job and you find out that job is a little bit more difficult,
00:04:02.680 --> 00:04:09.560
caused a little bit more time consuming, a little more emotional trauma from the patients you have.
00:04:09.700 --> 00:04:13.200
And you're like, oh, my gosh, I could have stayed with my other job. Right.
00:04:15.140 --> 00:04:15.860
But PAW.
00:04:16.531 --> 00:04:21.751
Said he faced countless hardships. What was his focus?
00:04:21.931 --> 00:04:27.031
His lesson he learned here was that resilience comes from focusing on God's
00:04:27.031 --> 00:04:31.611
purpose for your life, even when the path is difficult.
00:04:31.931 --> 00:04:35.951
That's a word for me. It might be a word for somebody else out there,
00:04:36.131 --> 00:04:42.011
that where God leads us doesn't say it's going to always be easy.
00:04:42.471 --> 00:04:44.471
It's going to be some hardship.
00:04:45.031 --> 00:04:49.271
I can say it'll be some beatings, some shipwrecks, or some imprisonments.
00:04:49.351 --> 00:04:54.171
But if that's part of that journey that God has you on, then our focus needs
00:04:54.171 --> 00:05:00.271
to count on the resilience that God has given us that we can handle it all. Why?
00:05:00.471 --> 00:05:05.211
Because he's always with us. This is part of his purpose for our life.
00:05:05.391 --> 00:05:07.111
This is part of our training.
00:05:07.531 --> 00:05:14.351
And even when a path is difficult, God says, I got you. You're going to be okay.
00:05:15.371 --> 00:05:19.991
So our source of our strength comes from God. So whenever we try to,
00:05:19.991 --> 00:05:25.191
you know, fake it, sometimes we can't fake it when we're tired, right?
00:05:25.351 --> 00:05:30.331
We can't fake it when we're angry. We can't fake it when you have no energy.
00:05:30.871 --> 00:05:34.591
But the lesson here is that we don't have to fake it.
00:05:34.711 --> 00:05:41.251
We are trusting in God. And then we're focusing on God's purpose for our life.
00:05:41.591 --> 00:05:46.911
So how do we develop this kind of resilience, the kind of resilience that Joseph
00:05:46.911 --> 00:05:50.131
had, the kind of resilience that Paul had?
00:05:50.411 --> 00:05:58.591
It starts out, once again, by staying connected to our source of strength, God.
00:05:59.151 --> 00:06:03.871
Psalms 28, 7 reads, the Lord is my strength and my shield.
00:06:04.131 --> 00:06:07.811
My heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
00:06:08.031 --> 00:06:13.431
My heart leaves for joy and with my song I praise him.
00:06:14.155 --> 00:06:19.695
When we trust in God, He gives us the strength to face any challenge.
00:06:20.455 --> 00:06:24.275
Resilience isn't about relying on our own abilities.
00:06:25.055 --> 00:06:30.195
It's about leaning into God's power and promises.
00:06:30.935 --> 00:06:38.355
When we trust in God, He gives us the strength to face any challenges.
00:06:39.595 --> 00:06:43.675
Resilience isn't about relying on our own abilities.
00:06:44.155 --> 00:06:49.135
It's about leaning into God, power, and promises.
00:06:49.915 --> 00:06:56.775
So where have you seen God's strength sustain you during a tough time?
00:06:56.835 --> 00:07:01.835
When we start to count the times that we knew it wasn't our strength,
00:07:02.175 --> 00:07:09.195
then we realize that we're not alone in this battle.
00:07:09.195 --> 00:07:15.595
And if we can lean back and count like, wow, remember, I didn't do that without
00:07:15.595 --> 00:07:20.035
the Lord, then we won't think that we're doing it on our own anyway, right?
00:07:20.955 --> 00:07:24.495
So building resilience takes intentional effort.
00:07:25.155 --> 00:07:29.595
Here are three steps to help you develop spiritual strength.
00:07:31.547 --> 00:07:35.147
Anchor yourself in prayer. Philippians 4, 6 reads,
00:07:35.747 --> 00:07:42.947
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition
00:07:42.947 --> 00:07:46.867
with thanksgiving, present your request to God.
00:07:47.387 --> 00:07:52.207
So prayer keeps us connected to God's peace and guidance during tough times.
00:07:52.307 --> 00:07:56.587
So when you start to feel a little anxious, you just say, hey,
00:07:56.747 --> 00:07:59.987
I'm feeling anxious, Lord. So you just take it right before the Lord.
00:08:00.827 --> 00:08:04.407
Right. So you give, you're giving the Lord, giving it right to him right away.
00:08:04.567 --> 00:08:08.147
So you're not carrying it. Number two, lean on God's promises.
00:08:09.047 --> 00:08:12.567
Isaiah 41, 10 says, so do not fear for I am with you.
00:08:12.667 --> 00:08:17.287
Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.
00:08:17.447 --> 00:08:21.827
I would uphold you with my righteous right hand. I love that verse.
00:08:22.347 --> 00:08:27.747
So do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
00:08:27.927 --> 00:08:31.347
I will strengthen you and help you.
00:08:31.507 --> 00:08:35.467
I would uphold you with my righteous right hand.
00:08:35.487 --> 00:08:42.567
So you want to memorize scriptures like that so you can remind yourself of God's faithfulness.
00:08:42.707 --> 00:08:46.887
So lean on his promises and memorize scriptures that will help you,
00:08:46.987 --> 00:08:53.487
that will come up automatically when you feel like you need a little extra reminder of who God is.
00:08:54.507 --> 00:08:59.007
And number three, surround yourself with encouragement. Stay connected to people
00:08:59.007 --> 00:09:02.947
who uplift your faith and remind you of God's goodness.
00:09:03.307 --> 00:09:08.587
Community is a powerful source of strength during adversity.
00:09:09.087 --> 00:09:13.687
So don't count on your own strength. Lean out to someone and say, hey, can you help me out?
00:09:13.847 --> 00:09:17.867
I'm feeling a little weak today. You know, so you want to anchor yourself in
00:09:17.867 --> 00:09:22.607
prayer Always have a prayer line God always will give you a plan of escape,
00:09:23.608 --> 00:09:28.588
He'll give you an answer. He'll give you discernment. He'll show you how to win that war.
00:09:29.348 --> 00:09:33.768
Lean on God's promises. I'll have some personal decrees that you can decree.
00:09:34.028 --> 00:09:37.328
Just decree the word of God over your situation.
00:09:38.088 --> 00:09:43.628
Memorize scripture. Go ahead and decree the scriptures you memorize from your heart.
00:09:44.048 --> 00:09:46.468
And then surround yourself with encouragement.
00:09:47.308 --> 00:09:53.208
Don't neglect your church or your Bible studies. Stay connected.
00:09:53.608 --> 00:09:55.488
To your encouraging crew.
00:09:56.488 --> 00:10:00.608
And let's say some decrees here. I decree that I am hard-pressed,
00:10:00.888 --> 00:10:03.468
not crushed, because God is my strength.
00:10:03.888 --> 00:10:10.268
I decree that I will not fear adversity, for the Lord upholds me with his righteous hand.
00:10:10.528 --> 00:10:18.128
And I decree that every trial I face will be turned into triumph by God's power.
00:10:19.428 --> 00:10:24.888
This week, I challenge you to reflect on a time when God helped you overcome a challenge.
00:10:25.528 --> 00:10:27.568
Write it down and be thankful.
00:10:28.228 --> 00:10:32.468
Keep a, like I always said, keep a gratitude journal. Because a lot of times
00:10:32.468 --> 00:10:35.828
when things come, we forget that he already rescued from that.
00:10:35.988 --> 00:10:37.888
So he will take care of this one too.
00:10:38.668 --> 00:10:41.828
Choose one of the scriptures we discussed today and memorize it.
00:10:42.088 --> 00:10:46.788
Let it be your anchor during times of adversity.
00:10:47.128 --> 00:10:51.428
Or maybe you already have a favorite scripture. Let that be your description.
00:10:51.788 --> 00:10:57.448
Create decrees around it so that you can actually just be having it like it's
00:10:57.448 --> 00:10:58.688
like being armed and ready.
00:10:59.808 --> 00:11:06.248
Let's close this out in prayer. Heavenly Father, thank you for being our strength in times of trouble.
00:11:06.608 --> 00:11:11.508
Help us to trust you completely and stand firm in faith, knowing that you would
00:11:11.508 --> 00:11:13.768
carry us through every challenge.
00:11:14.568 --> 00:11:21.048
Build resistance in our heart so that we can reflect your power and love in every situation.
00:11:21.528 --> 00:11:23.308
In Jesus' name, amen.
00:11:24.068 --> 00:11:28.648
Thank you for joining me for this episode of Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:11:29.948 --> 00:11:35.248
And if this message encouraged you, share with a friend and subscribe so you
00:11:35.248 --> 00:11:37.248
don't want to miss an episode.
00:11:37.748 --> 00:11:43.348
Until next time, with God, you are unshaken and unstoppable.
00:11:44.068 --> 00:11:45.348
And be blessed.
