Chapter 6; Ep 2: Waiting with Expectation: Growing Faith in God's Timing
Welcome back to the "Diary of a Black Woman" podcast with our devotional series! In this episode, we delve into the challenging yet transformative phase of waiting on God. Building on our previous discussion about asking with bold faith, today we explore the powerful story of the prophet Habakkuk, who dared to ask God tough questions and then waited with an expectant heart.
Waiting can often feel like the hardest part of our spiritual journey, where silence may seem daunting. However, this episode reassures us that the waiting period is where God works behind the scenes, preparing something greater than we can imagine. We learn from Habakkuk's posture of active faith—waiting like a soldier on duty, ready for God's direction.

00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:07.437
Welcome back, my amazing listeners, to Diary of a Black Woman podcast with our devotional series.
00:00:07.777 --> 00:00:16.517
If you tuned in last time, we kicked things off by talking about asking God with bold faith.
00:00:16.917 --> 00:00:22.477
Today, we're taking it up a notch. Oh, you know it, the wait.
00:00:22.777 --> 00:00:28.357
And let me tell you, the waiting room is where your faith is stretched.
00:00:28.357 --> 00:00:32.277
And sometimes seriously tested.
00:00:33.017 --> 00:00:36.917
Now, waiting can feel like the hardest part of your spiritual journey,
00:00:37.077 --> 00:00:40.937
right? You ask and then silence.
00:00:41.517 --> 00:00:46.697
But here's what I want you to hear today. This is what I want you to hear today.
00:00:46.957 --> 00:00:50.837
The wait is where God is working behind the scenes.
00:00:51.217 --> 00:00:56.317
We're about to dive into a story of a bold prophet named Habakkuk,
00:00:56.317 --> 00:01:03.157
who wasn't afraid to ask God the tough questions, and then waited expectantly.
00:01:03.737 --> 00:01:08.597
Are you ready to grow your faith in the wait? Let's do this.
00:01:09.657 --> 00:01:17.437
All right, picture this. Habakkuk, a prophet, looked at the chaos around him like we do today.
00:01:17.617 --> 00:01:23.137
He looked at the chaos around him and said, God, what is going on here?
00:01:23.517 --> 00:01:29.577
That's real, right? I mean, we've all had those moments when life feels out
00:01:29.577 --> 00:01:33.597
of control and we're like, God, where are you?
00:01:33.797 --> 00:01:37.477
But here's what makes Habakkuk's story incredible.
00:01:38.017 --> 00:01:44.077
After he laid this question before the Lord, he didn't walk around frustrated.
00:01:44.437 --> 00:01:48.557
He positioned himself to wait expectantly.
00:01:48.957 --> 00:01:50.737
So let's break this down.
00:01:51.297 --> 00:01:55.257
Waiting on God is not about sitting around twiddling our thumbs.
00:01:55.517 --> 00:02:04.337
It's about positioning yourself with an expected heart ready to see God move.
00:02:04.837 --> 00:02:10.557
Habakkuk stood on his watchtower ready for God's answer.
00:02:10.837 --> 00:02:17.577
So today we're going to dive into Habakkuk 1 and 2 and discover how to wait
00:02:17.577 --> 00:02:23.697
on God with faith, patience, and a spirit of expectation.
00:02:23.957 --> 00:02:27.577
So let's go into Habakkuk 1 and
00:02:27.982 --> 00:02:34.102
two and one through four. Excuse me. In these chapters, Habakkuk is real with God.
00:02:34.402 --> 00:02:40.262
He's bold enough to ask, why do you let this injustice go on?
00:02:40.362 --> 00:02:42.442
So he's bold enough to go before the Lord.
00:02:42.622 --> 00:02:48.762
He's looking around and he's saying, why are you letting this injustice go on?
00:02:49.562 --> 00:02:56.342
Why is violence everywhere? In Habakkuk 2.1, we see something powerful.
00:02:56.682 --> 00:03:03.122
His response to what God says. He said, I will stand at my watch and station myself.
00:03:03.382 --> 00:03:06.982
I will look to see what he will say to me.
00:03:07.322 --> 00:03:11.102
This isn't a passive waiting. It is active faith.
00:03:11.522 --> 00:03:14.122
He's not doubting if God will answer.
00:03:14.662 --> 00:03:18.882
He's standing at attention, expecting God to show up.
00:03:19.222 --> 00:03:23.842
How many times have we done that? We've prayed a prayer and then someone says,
00:03:24.162 --> 00:03:26.642
have you heard from God? And you go like, well, I'm waiting on him.
00:03:26.822 --> 00:03:32.802
How are you waiting on God? Are you waiting on him with an expectation like Habakkuk?
00:03:32.962 --> 00:03:40.362
He went on his tower and he waited in expectation to see what God would do.
00:03:40.362 --> 00:03:44.802
It says here, listen, God can handle your questions.
00:03:45.722 --> 00:03:52.882
Habakkuk didn't sugarcoat anything. He brought his raw, honest feelings to God.
00:03:53.262 --> 00:04:00.062
And God wants that from you too. But what says Habakkuk apart is his posture of waiting.
00:04:00.322 --> 00:04:03.422
He wasn't impatiently pacing or giving up.
00:04:03.582 --> 00:04:08.802
He was waiting like a soldier on duty, ready for God's direction.
00:04:09.102 --> 00:04:15.642
This is a major lesson for us. So when you ask, get ready to hear.
00:04:16.142 --> 00:04:20.322
Be in a position where your faith is on high alert.
00:04:20.682 --> 00:04:28.482
Oh, that's good. When you ask, position yourself to hear from God.
00:04:28.742 --> 00:04:33.482
So sometimes we'll ask a question. I don't know that's you, we'll ask in prayer,
00:04:33.482 --> 00:04:39.742
and then we'll go on with our other list and never position ourselves during our prayer time,
00:04:39.922 --> 00:04:45.242
just a silent time to see if God is going to respond to our prayers.
00:04:45.242 --> 00:04:52.362
If you pray a lot, and some of you are, it is a continual pray. You probably do.
00:04:52.562 --> 00:04:57.082
Those people who are listening to podcasts about prayer and Bible stuff,
00:04:57.242 --> 00:04:59.522
you're in an expectation of prayer.
00:04:59.702 --> 00:05:05.262
And so the conversation that you have with God is not like a stop and go.
00:05:05.482 --> 00:05:10.102
It seems to me in my prayer time, it's an ongoing conversation.
00:05:10.222 --> 00:05:15.982
So if it's an ongoing conversation that the conversation really never ends,
00:05:16.062 --> 00:05:18.722
you ever notice that? So you can go to him after.
00:05:19.565 --> 00:05:23.825
Praying in the morning, you might have a prayer request and you go to him in
00:05:23.825 --> 00:05:26.965
the evening. This is an ongoing conversation.
00:05:27.185 --> 00:05:32.205
And I think Habakkuk has that relationship with God where he will have these bold questions,
00:05:32.205 --> 00:05:39.105
but then he will go as an ongoing conversation and still wait to hear from God
00:05:39.105 --> 00:05:43.845
because the conversation is going ongoing. It doesn't stop.
00:05:44.345 --> 00:05:47.505
You're not like, you're not praying and then you stop and start another prayer.
00:05:47.505 --> 00:05:52.305
If you're a prayer, an intercessor, if you're just a prayer and you just pray
00:05:52.305 --> 00:05:56.985
all the time, the prayer that you have with God is always, always ongoing.
00:05:57.465 --> 00:06:01.505
Even your dreams are ongoing. Everything has this, it's a storyline.
00:06:01.805 --> 00:06:08.685
It continues on. But I love this. It says he wasn't impatiently pacing or giving up, excuse me.
00:06:09.465 --> 00:06:15.665
He was waiting like a soldier on duty, ready for God's direction.
00:06:15.825 --> 00:06:19.085
This is a major lesson when you ask.
00:06:19.425 --> 00:06:24.305
Get ready to hear. Get in position to hear.
00:06:24.485 --> 00:06:27.925
Get ready to hear the answer from God.
00:06:28.125 --> 00:06:32.945
Be in a position where your faith is on high alert.
00:06:33.265 --> 00:06:36.185
Faith grows in the waiting room.
00:06:36.285 --> 00:06:42.385
It's not easy, I know, but faith isn't just about believing when things happen fast.
00:06:42.445 --> 00:06:47.005
It's about trusting God when everything feels low.
00:06:47.665 --> 00:06:53.785
So James 117 reminds us that every good and perfect gifts come from above.
00:06:54.809 --> 00:07:00.329
But sometimes those gifts come after a season of waiting.
00:07:00.589 --> 00:07:04.429
And you know what? The wait isn't a waste of time.
00:07:05.029 --> 00:07:09.549
God's preparing something greater than you can imagine.
00:07:10.449 --> 00:07:15.589
James 1.17 is your lifeline during the wait.
00:07:15.909 --> 00:07:23.589
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the
00:07:23.589 --> 00:07:28.209
heavenly lives, who does not change like shifting shadows.
00:07:28.489 --> 00:07:33.729
So what a promise, right? Even when it seems like nothing is happening,
00:07:34.149 --> 00:07:40.329
God is setting up something perfect in his timing.
00:07:40.589 --> 00:07:45.929
How powerful is that, right? God is setting something up perfect in his timing.
00:07:46.109 --> 00:07:51.209
So while you wait, hold on to this truth.
00:07:51.809 --> 00:07:59.009
God's gifts are always good, and he's working things out even when you can't
00:07:59.009 --> 00:08:01.849
see it. I love what Habakkuk does.
00:08:02.069 --> 00:08:04.749
Get in a position to hear.
00:08:05.009 --> 00:08:12.449
Take time to listen to what God has to say. Let's go back over Habakkuk.
00:08:12.749 --> 00:08:18.049
I love Habakkuk. It says, wait expectantly for God's answer.
00:08:19.049 --> 00:08:21.989
Waiting can feel like the hardest part of our faith journey.
00:08:22.289 --> 00:08:31.849
But the truth is, it's in the waiting that God does some of his greatest work in us.
00:08:32.569 --> 00:08:37.069
Habakkuk shows us how to wait expectantly.
00:08:37.369 --> 00:08:43.129
He asks tough questions and when positioned himself to hear,
00:08:43.309 --> 00:08:47.449
and then he positions himself to hear from God with confidence.
00:08:48.049 --> 00:08:54.989
Waiting is never passive. It's the stance of trust, knowing that God's timing
00:08:54.989 --> 00:08:57.809
is perfect. He is not delayed.
00:08:58.289 --> 00:09:01.709
He will not delay beyond what is needed.
00:09:01.989 --> 00:09:06.249
Sometimes when I pray, like this morning, I can say, you know,
00:09:06.529 --> 00:09:11.529
I had a lot of questions, you know, but then when I sat in the presence of God,
00:09:11.529 --> 00:09:17.429
It seemed like I just sat there and he answered them without me even saying a word.
00:09:17.969 --> 00:09:23.109
And most of those questions were kind of, you know, they just a lot of questions
00:09:23.109 --> 00:09:26.429
like Habakkuk, what's going on? Little questions like that.
00:09:26.789 --> 00:09:30.749
Little questions, just wanted to know what was going on. When is this?
00:09:30.909 --> 00:09:32.929
When is that? This was kind of busy questions.
00:09:33.189 --> 00:09:37.789
But once I sat in the presence of God and just sat there quietly,
00:09:38.109 --> 00:09:41.269
it's like he answered them without me saying a word.
00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:50.120
In the waiting, in the expectation of wanting to hear, not always opening my mouth.
00:09:50.680 --> 00:09:53.800
Like, you know, you have the, you know, in a classroom, you always have the
00:09:53.800 --> 00:09:58.720
student, if they would just listen to the question or take time to listen,
00:09:59.040 --> 00:10:02.140
they can figure out the answer or how the process works.
00:10:02.300 --> 00:10:08.060
But they got 12 questions in a row, you know, those type of ways that you can
00:10:08.060 --> 00:10:11.340
go before God. You just kind of sit back and listen.
00:10:11.620 --> 00:10:16.920
And a lot of times you can hear the scriptures that he wants you to know about
00:10:16.920 --> 00:10:20.640
the answers because his word is inside of you. Right.
00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:27.300
You know, and so I love Habakkuk. So waiting in expectation to hear from God,
00:10:27.900 --> 00:10:34.080
waiting in silence with intentionality just to listen.
00:10:34.700 --> 00:10:37.660
Not always going before him with a whole lot of questions.
00:10:37.980 --> 00:10:41.240
Nothing wrong with that. It's a time and a season. But sometimes,
00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:45.060
like I said, if you're in prayer a lot, the conversation is ongoing.
00:10:45.280 --> 00:10:48.640
And sometimes he answers your questions before you ask them.
00:10:49.220 --> 00:10:55.520
What are you waiting for right now? whether it's an answer, a breakthrough, or a move of God.
00:10:55.780 --> 00:11:02.780
Remember that God's silence doesn't mean inactivity. He's preparing something amazing.
00:11:03.280 --> 00:11:09.060
Say it, amazing. God does amazing things in your way.
00:11:09.340 --> 00:11:13.580
So just a couple points of encouragement and then some scripture for support.
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:17.200
Number one, wait with expectation.
00:11:17.780 --> 00:11:23.720
Habakkuk waited with faith, in faith, fully expecting God's response.
00:11:24.580 --> 00:11:29.720
Trust that God is faithful and will answer in his perfect timing.
00:11:30.300 --> 00:11:35.580
Your wait is not wasted. Number two, during the wait, God is strengthening you,
00:11:35.820 --> 00:11:40.440
preparing your heart and setting things in motion that you cannot see.
00:11:40.600 --> 00:11:42.600
So don't give up.
00:11:43.269 --> 00:11:48.449
Position yourself to hear, like Habakkuk. Stand ready and attentive.
00:11:48.929 --> 00:11:56.489
Keep praying, stay faithful, and be alert for God's voice in unexpected places.
00:11:57.349 --> 00:12:02.509
I want to repeat that. Position yourself to hear, like Habakkuk.
00:12:02.929 --> 00:12:09.149
Stand ready, attentive. attentive, keep praying, stay faithful,
00:12:09.149 --> 00:12:14.169
and be alert for God's voice in unexpected places.
00:12:14.489 --> 00:12:20.269
And he does speak to you, your answer in unexpected places.
00:12:20.809 --> 00:12:25.289
It might not be while you're sitting there waiting. It could come across.
00:12:25.649 --> 00:12:32.889
It's always fun. God knows how to get your attention. He knows how to answer your prayers.
00:12:34.069 --> 00:12:40.229
And he's, I think he enjoys that. It'll give you your answer at these unexpected places, times.
00:12:41.589 --> 00:12:47.569
Okay, our scripture foundation is Habakkuk 1, 2, and 1 through 4.
00:12:47.849 --> 00:12:52.509
But any additional scriptures, supporting scriptures, Psalms 27,
00:12:52.869 --> 00:13:00.589
14, I read, Wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage. way for the Lord.
00:13:00.869 --> 00:13:05.909
This encourages bold patience, trusting that God is faithful,
00:13:06.649 --> 00:13:11.289
even when we don't see immediate results.
00:13:12.346 --> 00:13:18.506
Isaiah 40, 31, but they who wait for the Lord should renew their strength.
00:13:18.826 --> 00:13:21.606
They should mount up with wings like eagles.
00:13:22.046 --> 00:13:24.126
They should run and not be weary.
00:13:24.586 --> 00:13:30.666
They should walk and not faint. A reminder that waiting on God strengthens us.
00:13:30.926 --> 00:13:38.446
It's not a passive activity, but a bold stance in trust. And in Lamentations
00:13:38.446 --> 00:13:44.106
3, 25-26, it says the Lord is good to those who wait for him.
00:13:44.386 --> 00:13:53.666
To the soul who seeks him, it is good that one should wait patiently for the salvation of the Lord.
00:13:54.006 --> 00:13:58.306
The scripture calls us to wait with expectation and patience,
00:13:58.726 --> 00:14:04.166
knowing that God's timing is perfect.
00:14:04.946 --> 00:14:08.366
I know waiting feels like a grind sometimes, right?
00:14:08.686 --> 00:14:13.586
But remember this, God's delays are not his denials.
00:14:13.846 --> 00:14:18.446
And the way he's building your character, strengthening your faith,
00:14:18.686 --> 00:14:25.826
and setting you up for something beyond what you could not have imagined.
00:14:26.566 --> 00:14:30.826
So as you go through your week, position yourself like Habakkuk.
00:14:30.826 --> 00:14:37.886
Stand at your watchtower, ready for God's answer because it's coming.
00:14:38.286 --> 00:14:42.326
So let's do some interactive activities for this week here.
00:14:42.546 --> 00:14:48.306
So take a moment and ask yourself, what are you waiting for?
00:14:48.726 --> 00:14:53.086
Are you standing expectantly or are you losing hope?
00:14:53.306 --> 00:14:58.426
This week, challenge yourself to change your posture in the wait.
00:14:59.426 --> 00:15:07.086
God's answer is closer than you think. Then I want to challenge you.
00:15:07.726 --> 00:15:13.586
Yeah, got to challenge you. So I dare you this week to position yourself like Habakkuk.
00:15:13.946 --> 00:15:22.206
Spend time in prayer, expecting God's response, and watch how your perspective shifts.
00:15:22.766 --> 00:15:27.906
You know, don't leave God's presence so quickly, right?
00:15:28.426 --> 00:15:32.426
So take a moment, ask yourself, first one is what you're waiting for,
00:15:32.566 --> 00:15:35.226
and then I want you to wait in expectation.
00:15:35.726 --> 00:15:40.686
Challenge yourself to change your posture and your wait. So get excited about
00:15:40.686 --> 00:15:42.206
waiting. Wait for an answer.
00:15:42.426 --> 00:15:47.986
Then I dare you again to spend time in prayer and just expect a response.
00:15:48.486 --> 00:15:50.646
Expect to hear something from God.
00:15:51.186 --> 00:15:55.366
You know, many times if I don't hear God during my prayer time,
00:15:55.566 --> 00:15:59.346
many times I hear him in my dreams. He'll speak to me in my dreams.
00:16:00.426 --> 00:16:05.126
So he will speak to you. He will speak to you.
00:16:05.856 --> 00:16:10.596
So next time we're moving on to moving from waiting to action.
00:16:10.896 --> 00:16:14.356
Because when God speaks, we need to move, right?
00:16:14.956 --> 00:16:21.316
We're diving into how to respond to God's guidance with boldness, fearless action.
