Hello, beautiful people. Welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:00:06.117 --> 00:00:10.977
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and I'm glad that you're here as we continue our
00:00:10.977 --> 00:00:13.777
series, Sheltered by Faith.
00:00:14.257 --> 00:00:21.797
Today, we're exploring one of the most comforting images in scripture, God as our shepherd.
00:00:22.237 --> 00:00:28.617
The episode is titled, Guided by the Shepherd, God Provisions and Peace.
00:00:29.557 --> 00:00:33.937
Together, we'll explore how God's guidance leads us through life's valleys,
00:00:34.217 --> 00:00:38.957
provides for our needs, and gives us peace that sustains us.
00:00:39.357 --> 00:00:46.077
So let's begin with the key scripture for today. It's found in Psalms 23, verse 4.
00:00:46.637 --> 00:00:50.897
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,
00:00:50.937 --> 00:00:55.577
for you are with me, your rod, your staff, they comfort me.
00:00:56.517 --> 00:01:00.877
This verse paints a beautiful picture of God's role as our shepherd.
00:01:01.257 --> 00:01:07.357
He is with us in the darkest valleys, guiding us with his rod and staff.
00:01:07.757 --> 00:01:13.377
His rod presents protection, while the staff, excuse me, represents silence.
00:01:14.437 --> 00:01:19.277
Together, they symbolize God's care, leadership, and every season of life.
00:01:19.437 --> 00:01:23.977
Think about it. A shepherd's job is to lead the sheep to safety,
00:01:24.237 --> 00:01:27.117
provide for their needs, and protect them from danger.
00:01:27.897 --> 00:01:32.517
God does the same for us. He knows the path ahead even when we don't.
00:01:32.577 --> 00:01:35.897
He gently leads us where we need to be.
00:01:36.097 --> 00:01:41.877
I love that. To think of God as our shepherd, that God cares,
00:01:42.137 --> 00:01:49.657
that he is our leader. If we allow him to be, he is our leadership in every season.
00:01:50.337 --> 00:01:57.037
He leads us to safety. He provides for our needs and he protects us from danger.
00:01:57.457 --> 00:02:00.057
And that's what God does for us.
00:02:00.717 --> 00:02:04.077
And one thing about a shepherd, he knows the path ahead.
00:02:04.617 --> 00:02:10.037
And so we don't want to get ahead of God. We want to stay behind where it's
00:02:10.037 --> 00:02:15.277
safe and allow God to go before us and lead us where we need to be.
00:02:15.757 --> 00:02:21.137
I love that. I love that. Psalms 23 is rich in imagery and provision and peace.
00:02:21.337 --> 00:02:25.157
Let's take a moment and reflect on these two phrases.
00:02:25.597 --> 00:02:29.977
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
00:02:30.277 --> 00:02:35.117
Green pastures symbolizes abundance, rest, and nourishment.
00:02:35.517 --> 00:02:41.757
God knows when we need to pause, rest, and be refreshed. Sometimes we're so
00:02:41.757 --> 00:02:48.237
busy running that we forget to let God lead us to these places of peace.
00:02:49.281 --> 00:02:55.201
Could that be you? Could that be me? A lot of times we get so busy about tasks
00:02:55.201 --> 00:03:01.681
and getting things done that he really sometimes wants us to just stop and just
00:03:01.681 --> 00:03:06.341
enjoy the day, enjoy the scenery. Amen.
00:03:06.701 --> 00:03:13.521
So we have to be aware and be alert to when God wants us to just stop and just
00:03:13.521 --> 00:03:16.741
enjoy the peace, enjoy the surroundings.
00:03:17.541 --> 00:03:22.081
He leads me beside still waters. There's that other part. You're like me.
00:03:22.221 --> 00:03:23.661
I like to be busy, busy, busy.
00:03:23.941 --> 00:03:31.121
So being still is really not what I like to do, but sometimes I'm still, I'm still.
00:03:31.321 --> 00:03:38.041
And when I'm listening to God, I'm getting more, God's giving me more dreams.
00:03:38.241 --> 00:03:41.501
I'm getting my devotional time is enriched.
00:03:41.981 --> 00:03:45.961
And so it's not like I'm always writing devotionals. I don't even know when
00:03:45.961 --> 00:03:49.221
it's going to be devotional time. I'm not saying, oh, and you're devotional, Lord.
00:03:49.701 --> 00:03:53.321
It's like sometimes I'm just doing what I'm doing. And then he'll say,
00:03:53.521 --> 00:03:58.541
I'll get a dream or I'll have a powerful time in prayer.
00:03:58.681 --> 00:04:03.821
And he'll tell me this is a good for a devotional, right? Because he's the author
00:04:03.821 --> 00:04:06.441
and the finisher of these devotionals.
00:04:06.901 --> 00:04:10.821
Otherwise, I have too many, right? Everything God says, it'd be a devotional,
00:04:10.821 --> 00:04:14.681
it'd be a lot. But there's some points, what I'm trying to point out is that
00:04:14.681 --> 00:04:21.321
when you actually rest and get refreshed, then it's not such busy work.
00:04:22.021 --> 00:04:25.241
Let's go to Isaiah 26.3. I love this scripture.
00:04:25.481 --> 00:04:28.481
It says, I say it about every scripture you may notice. But it says,
00:04:28.641 --> 00:04:34.961
you will keep in perfect peace whose mind are steadfast because they trust in you.
00:04:34.961 --> 00:04:41.921
This verse reminds us that trusting God brings peace that the world cannot give.
00:04:42.741 --> 00:04:48.961
You know, that's powerful. So it says Isaiah 6, 26, 3, you will keep in perfect
00:04:48.961 --> 00:04:52.841
peace whose mind are steadfast because they trust in you.
00:04:53.041 --> 00:04:58.801
So just like a sheep is allowing the shepherd to lead, we as sheep,
00:04:58.981 --> 00:05:04.281
if we allow the shepherd to lead, we will be able to lie down in green pastures.
00:05:04.281 --> 00:05:06.821
We will be led by still waters.
00:05:07.001 --> 00:05:09.261
We will be kept in perfect peace.
00:05:09.741 --> 00:05:13.881
Remember, God gives us peace that the world cannot give.
00:05:14.902 --> 00:05:19.582
The world is shaking and quivering, but we have that peace. Why?
00:05:19.802 --> 00:05:24.502
Because our trust is in the God who is unshakable. Amen.
00:05:25.062 --> 00:05:30.582
So life isn't about green pastures and still waters, right? And all about that.
00:05:30.722 --> 00:05:33.122
But sometimes we walk through dark valleys.
00:05:33.322 --> 00:05:38.422
These are seasons of uncertainty, pain, or fear. But here's the good news.
00:05:38.582 --> 00:05:41.042
We don't walk through these valleys alone.
00:05:42.142 --> 00:05:46.182
Psalms 27.1, it says, The Lord is my light and my salvation.
00:05:46.362 --> 00:05:52.102
Whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Whom should I be afraid?
00:05:52.882 --> 00:05:55.802
Look at that. That's David saying, what?
00:05:56.182 --> 00:05:59.962
The Lord is my light and salvation. Whom should I fear?
00:06:00.202 --> 00:06:06.482
The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Of whom should I be afraid? That's bold talk.
00:06:07.402 --> 00:06:12.002
God's presence in the valley gives us courage. He doesn't mind.
00:06:12.282 --> 00:06:19.162
He doesn't promise we won't face hard times, but he does promise to walk with us through them.
00:06:19.502 --> 00:06:23.562
I love that. God never leaves us or forsake us.
00:06:23.782 --> 00:06:27.962
We do not have to be afraid because he's with us.
00:06:28.442 --> 00:06:34.742
Where do we need God's provision? Where do you need God's provision or guidance in your life right now?
00:06:35.082 --> 00:06:40.082
Think about the valleys you're walking through and invite God to lead you.
00:06:40.462 --> 00:06:43.542
I love that. Invite God to lead you.
00:06:44.213 --> 00:06:47.593
You know, I've been watching, I know I'm probably late on this,
00:06:47.733 --> 00:06:51.133
but I've been watching, I love, I don't have any dogs.
00:06:51.473 --> 00:06:54.433
I don't have time for dogs. Well, I wish I did.
00:06:54.773 --> 00:06:58.113
I had a couple of dogs when my kids were young, but I've been watching this
00:06:58.113 --> 00:07:04.773
show Dog Whisperer. And I'm learning a lot about behavior, human behavior by watching dog behavior.
00:07:05.213 --> 00:07:11.653
And this thing about allowing God to lead really helped me understand that when
00:07:11.653 --> 00:07:15.993
I get ahead of God, I get real anxious. I get real nervous.
00:07:16.113 --> 00:07:19.513
And you know how little nervous dogs get, they get real barky.
00:07:19.633 --> 00:07:22.793
So you're biting off, biting at everybody, you know?
00:07:22.933 --> 00:07:27.593
And so I realized that when I get that way, that I have stepped ahead of God.
00:07:27.593 --> 00:07:36.433
And so I need to pretty much like get back behind the Lord and let him be the lead pack leader.
00:07:36.633 --> 00:07:41.153
And then I can sit back and become why I don't have to be the nervous,
00:07:41.253 --> 00:07:46.253
fretful dog about what's going to happen next, because I'm in a position I'm
00:07:46.253 --> 00:07:49.773
not supposed to be in. I am not supposed to be the leader.
00:07:49.953 --> 00:07:54.313
That's why I'm nervous out front. That's why I'm anxious. You ever been that way?
00:07:55.053 --> 00:07:56.573
You're snapping off heads.
00:08:00.373 --> 00:08:04.953
You're smart. You're short with people because you're in the way.
00:08:05.213 --> 00:08:09.133
God is supposed to be leaning, and yet you have stepped out in front of him,
00:08:09.213 --> 00:08:15.253
and that brings out nervous and anxious energy because you're not supposed to be the leader.
00:08:15.493 --> 00:08:21.553
And I'm like, oh, my gosh. When I step back behind God and allow him to lead.
00:08:22.553 --> 00:08:27.373
Allow Jesus to be the shepherd of my life, I don't have that nervous energy.
00:08:27.373 --> 00:08:32.213
When I feel that nervous energy, I was like, okay, Father, I'm sorry.
00:08:32.453 --> 00:08:37.093
I've stepped out in front of you. I feel anxious and nervous because I'm trying
00:08:37.093 --> 00:08:42.653
to run ahead and trying to protect myself and do some things that I'm not supposed to be.
00:08:42.893 --> 00:08:47.173
And so that's not where I'm supposed to be. So I'm learning my position now.
00:08:47.832 --> 00:08:52.252
Because of just my emotional status, right?
00:08:52.512 --> 00:08:56.712
And I said, that's so good. And I'm just learning that from Dog Whisperer.
00:08:56.812 --> 00:09:01.412
When you're not the pack leader, you should be up front biting and barking at
00:09:01.412 --> 00:09:03.412
people. Why? Because you're out of place.
00:09:03.732 --> 00:09:08.492
And so I'm like, I'm out of place, Lord. Please forgive me. I'm going to step back behind you.
00:09:08.932 --> 00:09:15.532
How good is that? That's the good news. So how can we actively seek God's guidance and provision?
00:09:16.292 --> 00:09:19.092
Here are three ways to reconnect with him as our
00:09:19.092 --> 00:09:22.092
shepherd number one we want to spend time in prayer
00:09:22.092 --> 00:09:25.052
that's a reconnect that's to get back in your
00:09:25.052 --> 00:09:30.532
right space with him as your shepherd not you running out ahead but you stepping
00:09:30.532 --> 00:09:35.552
back you spend time in prayer talk to god about the areas where you need his
00:09:35.552 --> 00:09:41.132
guidance right lord i need your guidance in this i'm out ahead of you and i
00:09:41.132 --> 00:09:43.572
know that because I'm anxious and I'm nervous.
00:09:43.892 --> 00:09:51.572
And he, be honest about your fears and your uncertainties and prayer opens the door for his direction.
00:09:51.972 --> 00:09:57.732
Call on him and I will answer and tell you great unsearchable things you do
00:09:57.732 --> 00:10:00.272
not know. That's Jeremiah 33.3.
00:10:01.172 --> 00:10:06.112
Meditate on Psalms 23. Spend time reflecting on each verse.
00:10:06.332 --> 00:10:11.072
Let the words remind you of God's promise and his care for you.
00:10:11.372 --> 00:10:14.392
And number three, practice intentional rest.
00:10:14.752 --> 00:10:21.332
Just as sheep need to lie down in green pastures, we need moments of rest to hear God's voice.
00:10:21.572 --> 00:10:27.612
Take a quiet walk, sit by a peaceful spot, or simply pause and breathe.
00:10:28.631 --> 00:10:33.931
What are the three points? Spend time in prayer. Meditate on Psalms 23.
00:10:35.511 --> 00:10:40.211
Practice intentional rest. And, you know, one of my practice intentional rest
00:10:40.211 --> 00:10:47.311
is with these daylight saving times, it gets dark around here about 530 or so. That's early.
00:10:47.611 --> 00:10:51.311
And sometimes I would just go to bed. I was just like, you know,
00:10:51.451 --> 00:10:55.551
it's been a long day. It's 530, you know, put on my pajamas.
00:10:56.151 --> 00:11:00.311
And if I haven't took a shower, I will go take a shower, put on my pajamas and
00:11:00.311 --> 00:11:07.631
boom, I'm in the bed and 5.30, I am asleep by 4.45 or 4.15, the alarm is off
00:11:07.631 --> 00:11:09.151
and I have slept the whole night.
00:11:09.311 --> 00:11:14.651
So I did some intentional rest, especially when I feel anxious or nervous.
00:11:14.851 --> 00:11:16.391
I just need to go to sleep.
00:11:16.651 --> 00:11:20.451
Sometimes God gives me a dream. Sometimes I just have peaceful sleep.
00:11:20.971 --> 00:11:27.191
It's just how God works with me because I just know how to get in my place. Can I get an amen?
00:11:27.531 --> 00:11:31.631
So as we close out, I want to encourage you that no matter what valley you're
00:11:31.631 --> 00:11:33.491
walking through, God is your shepherd.
00:11:33.711 --> 00:11:38.071
He's guiding you, providing for you, and protecting you in every step of the way.
00:11:38.571 --> 00:11:44.031
Trust in his leadership and you'll find peace and provision you need.
00:11:44.211 --> 00:11:47.871
I want to say that again, us ladies, us strong ladies out there,
00:11:48.051 --> 00:11:49.931
trust in his leadership.
00:11:50.871 --> 00:11:55.411
Get out the way. Get out the way. Trust in his leadership.
00:11:55.671 --> 00:11:58.571
And I'm going to close this out in prayer. Let's pray. Heavenly Father,
00:11:58.711 --> 00:12:01.771
thank you for being our shepherd. You guide us.
00:12:02.151 --> 00:12:06.331
You protect us. Provide for us, even in the darkest valleys.
00:12:06.571 --> 00:12:10.931
Help us to trust in your care and to rest in your peace you offer.
00:12:11.211 --> 00:12:14.531
Lead us beside the still waters and restore us.
00:12:14.651 --> 00:12:20.091
And Lord God, I ask you that when we get in the way, just kind of tug us back
00:12:20.091 --> 00:12:23.551
on our little rope and put us back in our place.
00:12:24.411 --> 00:12:29.371
Lead us beside still waters, Lord God. Teach us how to have intentional rest.
00:12:30.091 --> 00:12:34.171
Teach us how to walk in faith, knowing that you are always with us.
00:12:34.251 --> 00:12:36.451
And I thank you in Jesus name, amen.
00:12:37.151 --> 00:12:42.151
I'd like to thank you again for joining me on this episode of Sheltered by Faith.
00:12:42.511 --> 00:12:47.931

00:12:47.931 --> 00:12:49.551
of God's guidance and peace.
