00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:03.837
Hello, and welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.

00:00:04.157 --> 00:00:08.177
We're listening to our first Faith on the Go monthly series.

00:00:08.317 --> 00:00:14.577
We just concluded the Eyes Wide Open series where we learn the power of praying

00:00:14.577 --> 00:00:21.137
in the Spirit and how to see what God is showing us with clarity and conviction.

00:00:21.457 --> 00:00:27.797
But here's what we must understand next, that what God reveals to us is holy.

00:00:28.517 --> 00:00:33.557
What we see from Him is sacred, and what we hear from Him is not common.

00:00:33.877 --> 00:00:38.737
And how we respond to His voice really does matter.

00:00:38.957 --> 00:00:44.457
This is why we're launching this new series, because too many have lost the

00:00:44.457 --> 00:00:46.737
reverence of the Holy God.

00:00:47.197 --> 00:00:52.537
We're hearing from God, but we're treating His word like it's optional.

00:00:53.297 --> 00:00:58.677
We're entering into his presence without honor, and the danger is real.

00:00:58.877 --> 00:01:04.457
We're getting used to glory without being changed by it. This is not just a

00:01:04.457 --> 00:01:05.897
teaching, it's a warning.

00:01:06.157 --> 00:01:12.797
A call to return to God with holy reverence and holy fear.

00:01:13.057 --> 00:01:17.037
A moment to check your posture before the king.

00:01:17.257 --> 00:01:22.997
So welcome to the curse of familiarity. When we get too casual with God,

00:01:23.257 --> 00:01:27.297
too common with His presence, too careless with His sacred.

00:01:28.324 --> 00:01:32.924
We don't just lose reverence, we risk losing the glory.

00:01:33.884 --> 00:01:37.584
But this series isn't about shame, it's about awakening.

00:01:37.944 --> 00:01:48.024
It's about returning to holy reverence fear and walking in the holy awe of the Lord God Almighty.

00:01:48.424 --> 00:01:54.904
I'm your host Connie Morris and this is Diary of a Black Woman podcast with

00:01:54.904 --> 00:01:58.424
our Faith on the Go series. So let's go.

00:01:59.184 --> 00:02:04.424
I'd like to open up in prayer with our favorite person of the Bible,

00:02:04.844 --> 00:02:07.104
Jabez. So let's make this declaration.

00:02:07.824 --> 00:02:12.484
God, we thank you that your hand is upon us. Our territory is continuing to

00:02:12.484 --> 00:02:15.064
expand. Please keep us from harm.

00:02:15.524 --> 00:02:21.184
And our prayers, thank you for hearing our prayers. And we know that you hear and you do answer them.

00:02:21.664 --> 00:02:27.984
Thank you that we walk free from pain. we walk in truth, and we turn back to

00:02:27.984 --> 00:02:30.464
a deep intimacy with you, O Father.

00:02:30.964 --> 00:02:37.144
We walk healed, we walk in power, and we walk boldly in our divine purpose.

00:02:38.124 --> 00:02:44.464
So I have a new episode here, and it's Faith on the Go from our Diary of a Black Woman podcast.

00:02:45.044 --> 00:02:50.404
And this came about just from what, you know, I've been seeing just showing

00:02:50.404 --> 00:02:54.224
up at church or just how people treat the Holy Word of God.

00:02:54.884 --> 00:02:59.664
And some of my favorite scriptures are in here about how do we honor God?

00:02:59.924 --> 00:03:05.584
We just cover Eyes Wide Open where we pray in the Spirit and God shows us things.

00:03:05.764 --> 00:03:08.024
But what do we do with those holy things?

00:03:08.524 --> 00:03:12.864
So let's just go over what we don't do, what we shouldn't do with it.

00:03:13.244 --> 00:03:19.124
The world is no longer recognizing the power of God. How many of us need the power of God to survive?

00:03:19.324 --> 00:03:24.444
I know I do. Raise your hand if you do. because the church no longer takes him seriously.

00:03:26.389 --> 00:03:30.309
We gather in his name, but we don't tremble. We quote his word,

00:03:30.469 --> 00:03:31.849
but we don't obey his word.

00:03:32.149 --> 00:03:36.329
We ask for miracles, but we offer no reverence.

00:03:36.649 --> 00:03:42.669
And we speak of relationship, but we really walk in familiarity.

00:03:45.149 --> 00:03:48.409
Well, welcome back to Faith on the Go, Diary of Black Women.

00:03:48.569 --> 00:03:51.769
I'm your host, Connie Morris. And today we're going to begin the sacred journey

00:03:51.769 --> 00:03:58.349
into what the Lord has shown me is spiritual cancer in the body of Christ.

00:03:58.609 --> 00:04:01.569
It's called the curse of familiarity.

00:04:02.309 --> 00:04:09.489
This message is not going to be entertaining, but it is to be for an awakening

00:04:09.489 --> 00:04:14.489
for the ones who know that something is missing in the church.

00:04:14.869 --> 00:04:19.629
And maybe, and just maybe, it is the fear of the Lord.

00:04:20.109 --> 00:04:25.129
Now, many of you probably never heard of what that, what is familiarity and what that looks like.

00:04:25.249 --> 00:04:31.149
And why would we use such a strong word like curse? Why is it called a curse of familiarity?

00:04:31.689 --> 00:04:38.229
Because familiarity is not like a closeness. You know, it's not like it's a friendship with God.

00:04:38.549 --> 00:04:43.729
It's when we've grown so close to being so used to His presence that we actually

00:04:43.729 --> 00:04:47.069
stop honoring His presence. You know, what does that look like?

00:04:47.329 --> 00:04:51.309
You know, some of it is obvious. Some of it, it'd be like, you know,

00:04:51.389 --> 00:04:52.949
you show up at church late.

00:04:53.569 --> 00:04:57.669
Church starts at 10, you walk in, the worship, you used to show up early.

00:04:58.419 --> 00:05:02.639
You know, you used to show up early, but now you just show up any time you want to.

00:05:03.039 --> 00:05:06.879
And then you expect a seat in the front row because you've been a member of

00:05:06.879 --> 00:05:08.939
the church for a certain amount of years.

00:05:09.139 --> 00:05:14.739
So there should be a seat for you because, you know, you've been a member for oh so long.

00:05:14.999 --> 00:05:17.379
That's the familiarity of God's presence.

00:05:17.739 --> 00:05:21.639
You just show up when you want to. You decide to serve on a certain,

00:05:22.059 --> 00:05:27.659
maybe you're an usher, a greeter, or whatever you decide on in the ministry

00:05:27.659 --> 00:05:30.019
or health team. But you don't honor that.

00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:33.499
You just show up when you want to. You're on the schedule.

00:05:34.039 --> 00:05:38.419
They put you down, but you don't okay it. You don't say, yeah,

00:05:38.499 --> 00:05:40.239
I'm showing up. You just don't show up.

00:05:40.919 --> 00:05:43.739
That's familiarity because you've been there.

00:05:44.159 --> 00:05:47.419
I don't have to show up. You should have called me earlier.

00:05:47.599 --> 00:05:53.259
We get a little kind of secret attitude. So familiarity happens when the sacred

00:05:53.259 --> 00:06:00.359
becomes common, when the awe becomes apathy, when routine replaces reverence.

00:06:00.499 --> 00:06:02.239
You still go to church.

00:06:02.559 --> 00:06:09.079
You still pray. You still serve, sort of, kind of, but something's missing.

00:06:09.299 --> 00:06:11.579
Something's not there. Something's gone.

00:06:11.959 --> 00:06:17.559
The trembling is not there. The reverence, the fire is just not there.

00:06:18.179 --> 00:06:21.499
The voice of conviction is just not there.

00:06:21.779 --> 00:06:26.439
You come to church like you're going to the grocery store. You show up at church

00:06:26.439 --> 00:06:28.419
like you're showing up at your friend's house.

00:06:28.759 --> 00:06:34.019
You know, you serve any kind of way. You just, because you walked in the door,

00:06:34.159 --> 00:06:38.319
we should just be happy you showed up. That's not honoring God.

00:06:39.253 --> 00:06:44.473
God told you to serve, not to man, but unto him.

00:06:44.933 --> 00:06:50.253
So what happens when familiarity shows up? What does that steal from you?

00:06:51.113 --> 00:06:56.733
Familiarity is a thief. It doesn't show up loud, but it robs you.

00:06:57.533 --> 00:07:01.433
The awe, you stop being moved by the presence of God.

00:07:01.833 --> 00:07:08.513
The presence of God is moving greatly in the sanctuary, and you're still standing,

00:07:08.893 --> 00:07:16.433
everyone else is on their knees, everybody has fell on the floor in honor of the presence of God.

00:07:16.613 --> 00:07:21.293
And you're still standing, looking around, and in your mind,

00:07:21.433 --> 00:07:25.313
you're saying, it doesn't take all that. The awe is gone.

00:07:26.273 --> 00:07:29.813
Honor. You stop respecting the spiritual things.

00:07:30.393 --> 00:07:36.453
Instead of you honoring the spiritual things of God, you just don't respect it anymore.

00:07:36.873 --> 00:07:42.553
You used to walk in, in the church lot and you see trash kind of floating around in there.

00:07:42.673 --> 00:07:47.073
You'll go pick it up and put it in the garbage can or even in the restroom or whatever.

00:07:47.673 --> 00:07:53.133
You're honoring, you're honoring the church, right? The spiritual things you used to pray.

00:07:53.593 --> 00:07:59.733
You couldn't miss a message, but now the message is missing you.

00:08:01.093 --> 00:08:04.873
Obedience. You start responding when God speaks.

00:08:05.473 --> 00:08:08.713
Now he yells and you still don't respond.

00:08:09.253 --> 00:08:14.933
You're like, it still don't take all that. I don't need to respond the way I used to respond.

00:08:15.293 --> 00:08:21.033
Why? Because we think that we get seniority in the church that we can kind of

00:08:21.033 --> 00:08:23.773
disrespect the Lord or disrespect his presence.

00:08:24.473 --> 00:08:30.013
We know that Moses and a lot of times when God moved, Enoch was three,

00:08:30.213 --> 00:08:34.193
he walked with God, was it 300 years? It was like a long time.

00:08:34.533 --> 00:08:36.793
There is no seniority in the spirit.

00:08:37.253 --> 00:08:41.153
There is seniority when it comes to serving God. He sees that,

00:08:41.453 --> 00:08:44.953
but you're never too old to obey him.

00:08:45.413 --> 00:08:49.613
And so seniority, familiarity robs you of the awe.

00:08:49.853 --> 00:08:54.593
It robs you of the honor. It robs you of the obedience. You become numb.

00:08:54.593 --> 00:08:57.113
You become busy, but barren.

00:08:57.213 --> 00:09:02.153
You look like you're busy about the Lord's business, but you're not producing any fruit.

00:09:02.693 --> 00:09:05.793
You're in the building, but you're not in his presence.

00:09:06.746 --> 00:09:12.886
So here's the danger. What you treat as common, you will never carry with power.

00:09:13.386 --> 00:09:19.006
And that can cause a lot of emotional turmoil because you're in the building.

00:09:19.266 --> 00:09:23.566
You think you're serving God with all your heart, but you have lost the awe.

00:09:24.106 --> 00:09:28.746
You know, what happens? You'll say, no one ever prophesies over me.

00:09:28.886 --> 00:09:30.926
Well, God talks to us all the time.

00:09:31.266 --> 00:09:35.806
He talks to you all the time. But are you listening?

00:09:36.406 --> 00:09:41.226
So let's walk through the word and see what happens when we dishonor God.

00:09:41.706 --> 00:09:45.106
This is not to scare you, but it's just to wake you up.

00:09:45.386 --> 00:09:52.186
We had Nadab and Abihu, a strange fire in the sanctuary.

00:09:52.446 --> 00:09:56.926
That's found in Leviticus chapter 10 verses 1 through 2.

00:09:57.426 --> 00:10:04.106
They offered an unauthorized fire. So fire came out from the Lord and consumed

00:10:04.106 --> 00:10:07.386
him. We know that the Lord is a consuming fire.

00:10:07.406 --> 00:10:11.146
So if you play with fire, you will get burnt.

00:10:11.606 --> 00:10:16.326
And so we know that Nabdab and Abihu, I might be messing up those names,

00:10:16.586 --> 00:10:22.566
but go to Leviticus 10 through 1st chapter 10, 1 through 2, and you can look it up.

00:10:22.706 --> 00:10:27.726
It says they were priests, sons of Aaron in ministry.

00:10:27.926 --> 00:10:33.186
So they were raised up in the church. They were raised up in ministry.

00:10:34.086 --> 00:10:38.006
And so as they were raised up in the church and raised up in ministry,

00:10:38.246 --> 00:10:40.946
they knew what to do and what not to do.

00:10:41.226 --> 00:10:47.486
But they got into the church and they were playing with the fire.

00:10:48.400 --> 00:10:56.420
And they offered worship God did not ask for, and the fire they mishandled, and it killed them.

00:10:56.680 --> 00:11:02.960
God doesn't accept anything just because we offer it. It must be holy.

00:11:03.220 --> 00:11:11.420
So we have these two sons who were the sons of the priest playing with fire,

00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:16.300
became too familiar with the holy things of God.

00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:22.780
And God, it says, so fire came out from the Lord and consumed them. Boom, they were dead.

00:11:23.180 --> 00:11:28.180
Playing with the holy things, and they were killed immediately.

00:11:29.680 --> 00:11:36.240
Uzzah, the casual touch of the ark, 2 Samuel 6, verse 6-7.

00:11:36.440 --> 00:11:41.240
This is not to scare you, but to show you that even though you don't see God,

00:11:41.960 --> 00:11:45.900
even though we do feel him, he's still watching.

00:11:46.300 --> 00:11:53.620
And he is still holy. So he reached out and took hold of the ark, and God struck him.

00:11:54.020 --> 00:12:00.300
So Uzzah was holding the ark of the Lord, and it began to shake as they were carrying it.

00:12:00.580 --> 00:12:04.480
And Uzzah thought that he can catch the ark if it fell.

00:12:04.640 --> 00:12:11.180
So Uzzah grew up around the ark. He was used to it, but he forgot it was holy.

00:12:12.100 --> 00:12:19.220
Familiarity made him casual, and one unclean touch ended his life.

00:12:19.740 --> 00:12:27.140
So we see two people here so far that played with fire and got burnt.

00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:35.260
We see here in Eli's sons, defiling the offering that's found in 1 Samuel 2,

00:12:35.680 --> 00:12:42.260
verses 12-17, and chapter 4, verse 11.

00:12:42.660 --> 00:12:48.140
It said they had no regard for the Lord, and they died.

00:12:48.620 --> 00:12:51.300
These were leaders. They were priests.

00:12:51.860 --> 00:12:57.700
So the people that are dying are not the ones who didn't know what they were

00:12:57.700 --> 00:13:01.600
doing. They purposely was playing with holiness.

00:13:02.120 --> 00:13:06.340
So these were priests. They were leaders. They're supposed to set the example,

00:13:06.360 --> 00:13:11.700
but they abused the offering, slept with women at the altar,

00:13:12.100 --> 00:13:14.700
used their position for personal gain.

00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:19.560
God warned them. They didn't repent. He judged them.

00:13:19.560 --> 00:13:26.880
Leadership without reverence is rebellion So we see Eli's sons,

00:13:26.940 --> 00:13:30.560
they defiled the offering Not only did they defile the offering,

00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:33.040
they disrespected the offering,

00:13:33.835 --> 00:13:38.175
We read here that it says, they slept with women. You can read it in your Bible.

00:13:38.655 --> 00:13:40.915
They slept with women at the altar.

00:13:41.935 --> 00:13:46.855
Now, as we read this, you can pretty much think about what's going on in the

00:13:46.855 --> 00:13:48.295
real world. I don't watch the news.

00:13:48.435 --> 00:13:51.935
I don't follow different churches online, so I don't really know what's going on.

00:13:52.235 --> 00:13:57.735
But sometimes some of that stuff happens to hit the main, some of my news feed,

00:13:57.975 --> 00:14:04.595
and it kind of fall right into this story. how God holds leadership accountable

00:14:04.595 --> 00:14:06.875
for what they're doing in the church.

00:14:07.235 --> 00:14:12.435
And most of this, no one's died yet, but if we keep playing with fire,

00:14:13.015 --> 00:14:15.095
those people will get burnt.

00:14:15.455 --> 00:14:22.735
I love when he says with the Eli sons that God warned them they did not repent.

00:14:22.735 --> 00:14:27.795
I never think that God would just, in my opinion, knowing God,

00:14:27.995 --> 00:14:32.575
how he talks to us and gives us 150,000 chances, right?

00:14:32.835 --> 00:14:41.675
But sometimes we're not listening. We get so disrespectful that God hasn't did it on the first time.

00:14:41.835 --> 00:14:48.075
He hasn't touched us on the hundredth time. But that hundredth and one time might be your last time.

00:14:48.675 --> 00:14:53.475
Let's go on to Judas. Judas, a kiss without a heart.

00:14:53.755 --> 00:15:03.475
You can find his story in Luke 22 verses 47 through 48 and Matthew chapter 27 verse 5.

00:15:03.855 --> 00:15:07.615
Judas, are you betraying the son of man with a kiss?

00:15:08.835 --> 00:15:13.615
Then he went and hanged himself. Judas walked with Jesus.

00:15:14.115 --> 00:15:17.375
He ate with him. Judas wasn't a stranger to Jesus.

00:15:18.095 --> 00:15:26.055
He was not a stranger to Jesus. But when the all died, betrayal took place.

00:15:26.975 --> 00:15:32.675
He kissed Jesus and sold him out. How many of us has done that?

00:15:33.355 --> 00:15:38.695
How many of us praise the Lord on Sunday or Wednesday, whenever you praise the

00:15:38.695 --> 00:15:41.775
Lord, but then sell them out on every other day?

00:15:42.135 --> 00:15:49.695
The kiss without a heart. What looked like affection was actually apostasy.

00:15:51.175 --> 00:15:56.395
Proximity to the holy is not the same as purity before the holy.

00:15:57.335 --> 00:16:03.535
Proximity to the holy is not the same as purity before the holy.

00:16:04.455 --> 00:16:10.235
So my question to you, have you grown familiar? Has worship become a routine?

00:16:11.355 --> 00:16:18.755
Do you skim scripture without conviction? Do you pray and never expect to be changed?

00:16:19.295 --> 00:16:22.355
Do you serve but don't tremble?

00:16:23.115 --> 00:16:29.595
If that's you, this is not condemnation. It's a divine invitation.

00:16:30.815 --> 00:16:37.415
You may have never been taught this. Maybe your church trained you to perform and not to fear.

00:16:37.775 --> 00:16:40.835
Maybe you didn't know that God still watches.

00:16:41.255 --> 00:16:43.215
He still weighs motives.

00:16:43.695 --> 00:16:53.015
He still expects awe. He still expects to be reverence and worship. But today, you know...

00:16:53.739 --> 00:16:57.659
And today, you can come back to reverence.

00:16:58.259 --> 00:17:02.119
We're going to do a quick prayer, but I want to just kind of do a quick review

00:17:02.119 --> 00:17:05.959
about what we just read, because that was really heavy.

00:17:06.459 --> 00:17:11.079
So let's talk about what happened while strange fire in the sanctuary.

00:17:11.859 --> 00:17:18.119
Nadab and Abihu, they were sons of Aaron, so they were priests of God,

00:17:18.279 --> 00:17:19.499
and they were in ministry.

00:17:19.739 --> 00:17:22.719
They offered worship that God didn't ask for.

00:17:23.439 --> 00:17:26.719
God has a particular way he wants to be worshipped.

00:17:27.299 --> 00:17:30.479
We got Uzzah, the casual touch of the ark.

00:17:30.779 --> 00:17:35.479
He grew up around the ark. He was used to it, but he forgot it was holy.

00:17:36.359 --> 00:17:40.459
Eli's sons, they defiled the offering. They were leaders. They were priests,

00:17:40.619 --> 00:17:43.199
but they were sleeping with the women at the altar.

00:17:43.519 --> 00:17:48.079
It's like sleeping with women at the church as leaders, using their position

00:17:48.079 --> 00:17:51.039
for personal gain. They ignored God.

00:17:51.759 --> 00:17:57.519
The kiss without the heart that Judas betrayed the Son of Man with a kiss.

00:17:58.279 --> 00:18:03.419
He got so familiar for being around him that he lost the awe.

00:18:03.599 --> 00:18:08.839
That happens when you maybe work at the church, and the pastor,

00:18:08.839 --> 00:18:11.139
he's friendly and he's fun,

00:18:11.439 --> 00:18:19.759
and you see him as a man, but he walks with the mantle from the Holy One of God.

00:18:19.759 --> 00:18:24.019
And when you get too familiar with him and you lose that awe,

00:18:24.339 --> 00:18:27.019
you can actually be a Judas.

00:18:27.939 --> 00:18:33.339
And have you stopped reading your Bible? Have you stopped what you have drawn

00:18:33.339 --> 00:18:35.079
you close to God from the beginning?

00:18:35.759 --> 00:18:39.899
What was it that kept you safe from sin?

00:18:40.902 --> 00:18:46.242
Do you show up to your post as routine? Does God show up in the temple,

00:18:46.522 --> 00:18:51.002
the tabernacle, as though He's here and I don't feel Him?

00:18:51.382 --> 00:18:53.382
Right? What do you do?

00:18:53.902 --> 00:18:58.822
Is that you? It's not a condemnation, knowing that He still watches.

00:18:59.422 --> 00:19:04.002
So let's repent and let's do our declarations and we'll close in prayer.

00:19:05.342 --> 00:19:11.502
Let's repeat after me. Lord, forgive me. Forgive me for walking on holy ground with dirty shoes.

00:19:11.862 --> 00:19:16.102
Forgive me for being casual where you were calling for consecration.

00:19:16.402 --> 00:19:18.622
I renounce the spirit of familiarity.

00:19:19.462 --> 00:19:22.802
I return to wonder, to trembling, to holy fear.

00:19:23.422 --> 00:19:28.642
Restore reverence in me. Let me never treat your presence as common again.

00:19:29.162 --> 00:19:33.222
Let me worship. Let my worship be weighty again.

00:19:33.662 --> 00:19:40.242
Let prayer be pure again. You are holy, and I will take you seriously again.

00:19:40.702 --> 00:19:42.542
In Jesus' name, amen.

00:19:43.422 --> 00:19:48.362
The declaration, say this aloud. I break the curse of familiarity.

00:19:49.342 --> 00:19:53.342
I choose reverence. I choose awe. I choose obedience.

00:19:54.182 --> 00:19:59.562
God is not common. He is holy, and I will tremble again.

00:20:00.282 --> 00:20:06.242
This is the word of the Lord, not just a podcast, not a performance.

00:20:06.242 --> 00:20:10.422
It's a prophetic invitation to repent and return to awe.

00:20:10.882 --> 00:20:15.582
Next episode, we'll walk slowly through the lives of Moses and Uzzah.

00:20:15.822 --> 00:20:18.622
Two men, two different responses.

00:20:19.042 --> 00:20:26.702
One removed his shoes, the other reached out his hand. One was caught, the other was killed.

00:20:28.102 --> 00:20:34.022
Until then, walk softly, worship deeply, and take God seriously.

00:20:34.622 --> 00:20:39.882
I'm Connie Morris, and this is Faith on the Go, the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.

00:20:40.682 --> 00:20:46.842
And this is your call to reverence. Amen. Until next time. See you later.
