Faith on the Go: Ep 2: Holy Reverence vs. Familiar Assumptions: Moses and Uzzah"
Welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast's Faith on the Go series. In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the contrasting stories of Moses and Uzzah, exploring how their interactions with the divine presence offer powerful lessons on reverence and assumption. Through an engaging exploration of scripture, we witness how Moses' respectful posture led to his divine calling, whereas Uzzah's irreverent act resulted in dire consequences.
Join host Connie Morris in understanding the importance of approaching sacred spaces with humility and respect. We are reminded that proximity to God doesn't guarantee protection; rather, it is our posture and reverence that grant us access to divine favor. This episode challenges listeners to reflect on their own lives, encouraging a return to holy ground living by embracing reverence, pausing to listen, and honoring God's presence in everyday moments.

00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:05.797
Welcome to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast with our Faith on the Go series.
00:00:05.997 --> 00:00:13.857
As we continue with episode two, Holy Ground or Dangerous Ground, Moses and Uzzah.
00:00:14.057 --> 00:00:15.577
Let's open up in prayer.
00:00:15.937 --> 00:00:21.177
As we declare like Jabez that God hand us upon us, our territory is expanding,
00:00:21.177 --> 00:00:26.457
we are kept from harm, and our prayers are heard, and they will be answered.
00:00:26.457 --> 00:00:31.817
Here we rise from pain, walk in truth, and return to deep intimacy with God,
00:00:32.237 --> 00:00:36.777
healed, empowered, and walking boldly in divine purpose.
00:00:37.197 --> 00:00:41.257
So let's get going. So we're going to finish up.
00:00:41.477 --> 00:00:46.177
We're going to start off where we left off. We see here that the same presence,
00:00:46.177 --> 00:00:47.597
we'll find out here that the same
00:00:47.597 --> 00:00:53.737
presence that promoted Moses is the same presence that struck down Uzzah.
00:00:54.677 --> 00:00:59.197
One removed his shoes, the other reached out his hand.
00:00:59.497 --> 00:01:03.437
One showed reverence and the other showed assumptions.
00:01:04.357 --> 00:01:08.057
And that's what we're going to talk about today. So like I said,
00:01:08.177 --> 00:01:10.997
welcome back to Faith on the Go, Diary of Black Women podcast.
00:01:11.397 --> 00:01:16.297
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and this is episode two in our series,
00:01:16.717 --> 00:01:22.217
The Curse of Familiarity, Rediscovering Reverence and Restoring Awe.
00:01:22.217 --> 00:01:27.917
Today, we're going to study two men, two moments, and one holy God.
00:01:28.277 --> 00:01:32.997
We're going to compare Moza and Uzzah. Let's see what happens here.
00:01:33.217 --> 00:01:37.217
Because both were in proximity to the presence of God.
00:01:37.497 --> 00:01:45.557
Both had encounters with what was sacred, but their outcomes were drastically different.
00:01:45.897 --> 00:01:52.857
That tells us something. It's not proximity that protects you. is your posture.
00:01:53.297 --> 00:01:58.117
Let's talk about Moses' posture, the posture of reverence.
00:01:58.357 --> 00:02:07.017
We can see that. We can learn about Moses in Exodus 3, verses 1 through 5 in the NIV.
00:02:07.357 --> 00:02:12.637
I'll be reading. It says, there the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames
00:02:12.637 --> 00:02:14.917
of fire from within a bush.
00:02:15.137 --> 00:02:21.417
Moses saw through the bush was on fire. So he saw the bush on fire and it didn't burn up.
00:02:22.121 --> 00:02:26.921
When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him.
00:02:27.181 --> 00:02:30.361
Do not come any closer, God said.
00:02:30.681 --> 00:02:36.381
Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
00:02:36.901 --> 00:02:43.181
Now understand that Moses was always in the back bush area because he was a shepherd.
00:02:43.461 --> 00:02:47.721
So he knew this land. But there was something different happening.
00:02:48.061 --> 00:02:53.821
A bush was burning without being consumed. and he turned his side.
00:02:54.261 --> 00:03:00.581
So think about it. Bushes kind of maybe spontaneous catch on fire a lot in the
00:03:00.581 --> 00:03:04.401
wilderness because it's hot and it's always the sun is burning down.
00:03:04.601 --> 00:03:09.721
But for this particular bush, Moses caught Moses' eye.
00:03:10.081 --> 00:03:17.081
And so when he caught his eye, a guy waited to speak until Moses paused.
00:03:17.221 --> 00:03:22.401
So he caught his eye And Moses was pretty much probably looking at the bush,
00:03:22.521 --> 00:03:29.681
you know, saying, this bush is not going to just, this fire is not consuming this bush.
00:03:30.741 --> 00:03:36.961
And then the command came, remove your shoes.
00:03:37.261 --> 00:03:39.341
This is holy ground.
00:03:40.141 --> 00:03:45.521
That was a moment, I believe, for Moses to decide to go like,
00:03:45.721 --> 00:03:49.061
okay, the bush is now talking to me. is not being consumed.
00:03:50.201 --> 00:03:55.041
Now it's talking. But what Moses did was he obeyed.
00:03:55.421 --> 00:04:00.141
He didn't assume. He didn't reach. He just removed his sandals.
00:04:00.301 --> 00:04:04.821
He acknowledged the ground had changed because God was there.
00:04:05.561 --> 00:04:09.701
Reverence gave him access. Reverence birthed his calling.
00:04:10.101 --> 00:04:13.721
Reverence opened up his revelation. How powerful is that?
00:04:13.961 --> 00:04:22.441
How powerful that Moses, who's a shepherd, who may have saw a common thing in the wilderness.
00:04:23.760 --> 00:04:26.920
Become holy right before his eye.
00:04:27.280 --> 00:04:33.680
But he didn't allow that familiarity to prevent him from hearing the voice of the Lord.
00:04:33.860 --> 00:04:36.120
Oh, that is some good stuff right there.
00:04:36.440 --> 00:04:41.560
And how often does God speak to us in our common spaces?
00:04:42.140 --> 00:04:46.580
And we often ignore it. Oh, that can't be God speaking to me right here as I'm
00:04:46.580 --> 00:04:50.180
in the grocery store buying eggs for breakfast.
00:04:50.740 --> 00:04:55.820
Come on now. God wants to speak to you whenever he can have that moment with you.
00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:59.440
Whenever that moment when your mind is not busy about something else,
00:04:59.620 --> 00:05:02.000
he will just sneak in and speak to you.
00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:07.420
That holy moment becomes a holy spot in the grocery store where you're purchasing
00:05:07.420 --> 00:05:11.900
your eggs or your bread or your juice or whatever you're at the grocery store buying.
00:05:12.220 --> 00:05:16.720
Today, I was on my way to drop off some, I was purging my closet.
00:05:16.920 --> 00:05:22.040
Yes, again, because I bought some new things. And when I buy new things, I take old things out.
00:05:22.200 --> 00:05:26.060
And I was taking some things to the Salvation Army or the Goodwill.
00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:31.440
And he was talking to me about something. And my car just became holy.
00:05:31.660 --> 00:05:34.100
The Spirit of God just filled the car.
00:05:34.780 --> 00:05:40.860
And I was like, oh, my gosh. So what I learned now is I keep paper towel in
00:05:40.860 --> 00:05:43.440
my backseat because I usually, you know,
00:05:44.100 --> 00:05:48.660
or napkins or Kleenex, because I know when God wants to speak,
00:05:48.820 --> 00:05:50.880
I get really watery and crying.
00:05:51.260 --> 00:05:54.120
And so that particular morning, it was just the oddest thing.
00:05:54.200 --> 00:05:58.400
I said, let me put some paper towel in my back seat of my car,
00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:01.600
because just out of the ordinary, I did that.
00:06:01.960 --> 00:06:09.840
And lo and behold, I was ready for when God wanted to make my car holy ground for him to speak to me.
00:06:10.620 --> 00:06:14.140
So we see here that Moses did not make any assumptions.
00:06:14.360 --> 00:06:19.240
He just followed the God, followed what God said. This is holy ground.
00:06:19.480 --> 00:06:23.460
At that moment, things shifted and things changed.
00:06:23.740 --> 00:06:28.760
And Moses was ready. Now let's look at Uzzah, what happened with him.
00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:30.720
The posture of assumption.
00:06:31.260 --> 00:06:37.600
Okay, when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and
00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:39.440
took hold of the ark because it was shaking.
00:06:40.432 --> 00:06:47.112
Ark of God because the oxen stumbled and the Lord's anger burned against Uzzah
00:06:47.112 --> 00:06:49.852
because of his irreverent act.
00:06:50.172 --> 00:06:55.352
Therefore, God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.
00:06:55.852 --> 00:06:59.712
The ark of the covenant represented God's throne and presence.
00:06:59.932 --> 00:07:02.452
God had given strict instructions.
00:07:02.732 --> 00:07:08.172
Only Levites could carry it, and even then not to touch it.
00:07:08.412 --> 00:07:15.972
But Uzzah, who had grown up around it, it had been in his house for 20 years. He had become familiar.
00:07:16.272 --> 00:07:20.412
But when it began to fall, he reached out his hand.
00:07:20.812 --> 00:07:27.592
That hand was steady, but it wasn't sanctified, and God struck him down.
00:07:28.312 --> 00:07:36.432
Why did God strike him down? Because even well-meaning irreverence is still irreverence.
00:07:37.092 --> 00:07:42.812
Wow. Even well-meaning irreverence is still irreverence.
00:07:43.232 --> 00:07:48.392
I like to say it. Disrespect is disrespect, no matter how you put it.
00:07:48.592 --> 00:07:50.472
I didn't mean to be disrespectful.
00:07:50.732 --> 00:07:52.652
What it looked like, disrespect to me.
00:07:53.252 --> 00:07:55.572
You didn't mean it, but it looked like it.
00:07:56.212 --> 00:08:02.192
God said that to Uzzah. You didn't mean it, but it looked like it. And so, boom, you dead.
00:08:02.712 --> 00:08:07.052
Let's see what happens when we compare both Moses and Uzzah together.
00:08:07.292 --> 00:08:09.792
What happened? Moses turned aside.
00:08:10.892 --> 00:08:17.852
Uzzah reacted quickly. Moses removed his shoes. Uzzah reached out his hands.
00:08:18.432 --> 00:08:25.072
Moses waited for God's word. Uzzah acted without God's permission.
00:08:25.572 --> 00:08:27.832
Moses treated the ground as holy.
00:08:28.592 --> 00:08:31.052
Uzzah treated the ark as familiar.
00:08:32.172 --> 00:08:36.812
Moses received calling. Uzzah received judgment.
00:08:37.612 --> 00:08:43.472
Beloved, this is not a game. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
00:08:43.932 --> 00:08:50.032
He rewards reverence, but he resists those who treat him casually.
00:08:50.412 --> 00:08:52.252
So what is your posture?
00:08:52.752 --> 00:08:54.932
Are you removing your shoes?
00:08:55.572 --> 00:09:02.072
Or grabbing at things God didn't call you to touch? Ouch! Are you removing your shoes?
00:09:02.872 --> 00:09:07.952
Are you grabbing at things God called you, didn't call you to touch?
00:09:08.592 --> 00:09:14.052
Are you walking with reverence or assuming God will bless anything you do?
00:09:14.872 --> 00:09:20.052
Familiarity makes you reach, but reverence makes you remove.
00:09:21.012 --> 00:09:27.032
Oh, let me say that again. Are you removing your shoes or grabbing at things
00:09:27.032 --> 00:09:29.032
God didn't call you to touch?
00:09:30.188 --> 00:09:34.808
What is that, that God is telling you don't touch that? But you're going to
00:09:34.808 --> 00:09:36.028
say, well, that won't hurt me.
00:09:36.768 --> 00:09:40.548
That ain't going to hurt me. I'm a Christian. I'm going to pray about it.
00:09:40.788 --> 00:09:44.988
When he says don't touch it, are you walking in reverence?
00:09:45.248 --> 00:09:49.608
Are you assuming God will bless anything you do?
00:09:50.688 --> 00:09:57.468
For me, it already makes you reach. For reverence makes you remove.
00:09:58.808 --> 00:10:02.388
Makes you stay, makes you think. It's like, is that the Lord?
00:10:02.608 --> 00:10:04.708
And then you want to stop and listen.
00:10:05.348 --> 00:10:09.248
I think that's the Lord. I'm going to stop. How many of us done that?
00:10:09.388 --> 00:10:12.208
When you said, don't go there, and you go, I think that's the Lord.
00:10:12.268 --> 00:10:13.108
I think I'm going to stop.
00:10:13.288 --> 00:10:15.648
Or you go, I don't think that's the Lord, and you go forward.
00:10:16.388 --> 00:10:20.188
So today I invite you to check your posture.
00:10:23.468 --> 00:10:28.368
Let's pray. Father, forgive me for the places I've moved too quickly,
00:10:28.688 --> 00:10:32.188
for the things I've touched that you never called me to handle,
00:10:32.508 --> 00:10:36.588
for the moments I treated the sacred as familiar.
00:10:37.168 --> 00:10:45.968
Help me to be like Moses to pause, to turn aside, to take off my shoes when you are near,
00:10:46.388 --> 00:10:53.588
to walk, to want to stand on holy ground, not as one who grabs but one who listens,
00:10:53.808 --> 00:11:00.508
honors, and obeys in Jesus' name in Jesus' name, amen let's do a declaration,
00:11:01.788 --> 00:11:08.208
say this out loud I will not touch what I have not been called to carry I will
00:11:08.208 --> 00:11:14.508
not reach an assumption I will walk in reverence I will remove my shoes,
00:11:15.168 --> 00:11:20.568
God is holy and I will treat him as holy Ooh,
00:11:21.228 --> 00:11:27.008
God is holy and I would treat him as holy It makes you want to pause, right?
00:11:27.148 --> 00:11:31.348
Because Uzzah, you think that wasn't, he didn't want the ark to fall Like that
00:11:31.348 --> 00:11:36.888
was a good thing But God didn't need his help You think he, the holy one of
00:11:36.888 --> 00:11:38.808
Israel, could have stopped it?
00:11:38.968 --> 00:11:44.568
Ooh, did it hit the ground? It didn't hit the ground, did it? It never hit the ground.
00:11:45.771 --> 00:11:50.651
Ooh, that's powerful. This message is not about fear. It's about honor.
00:11:50.931 --> 00:11:58.751
It's a call back to holy ground living because you don't need a title to have reverence.
00:11:59.271 --> 00:12:02.571
You don't need a pulpit to remove your shoes.
00:12:03.451 --> 00:12:07.331
You just need to know God is here and he is holy.
00:12:08.091 --> 00:12:13.411
The next episode, we'll explore how the church has normalized the sacred and
00:12:13.411 --> 00:12:17.191
what happens when the sanctuary becomes a stage.
00:12:17.911 --> 00:12:22.071
Until then, this is Connie Morris, your host, Connie Morris,
00:12:22.071 --> 00:12:27.991
reminding you to walk slow, speak soft, and honor his presence.
00:12:28.811 --> 00:12:33.531
Let's close this out with the declaration and promise from Jeremiah 29,
00:12:33.611 --> 00:12:39.271
11-14, that God knows the plans he has for you, plans to prosper you,
00:12:39.411 --> 00:12:42.971
not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
00:12:43.751 --> 00:12:46.931
And when you seek him with all your heart, you will find him.
00:12:47.331 --> 00:12:51.931
He will bring you back from captivity and restore everything that was lost.
00:12:52.531 --> 00:12:59.191
Hold on. Your healing, your clarity, and your breakthrough are closer than you think.
00:12:59.651 --> 00:13:04.051
This is more than a podcast. This is the return to God's plan for your life.
00:13:04.371 --> 00:13:06.831
Let's keep walking this out together.
