Mind of Christ: Ep 1: Surrendered: The Mind of Obedience
Connie Morris explores what it means to have a mind of obedience like Jesus, rooted in Philippians 2:8. She walks listeners through Scripture—from the temple as a boy, to Gethsemane, to Calvary—and shows how surrender, stillness, and trust shape a life that completes God’s assignment.
This episode offers five practical steps to ‘walk it out like Jesus,’ reflective questions, prayer, and encouragement to trade fear for faith as you obey the Father’s will.

Welcome to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast with your host,
00:00:16.693 --> 00:00:21.413
Connie Morris, where healing has a voice and truth is no longer silent.
00:00:21.653 --> 00:00:26.353
Father God, like Jabez, we cry out that thou would bless us indeed.
00:00:26.913 --> 00:00:32.293
Bless every woman listening beyond trauma, beyond limits, beyond what she thought
00:00:32.293 --> 00:00:35.053
was possible. Enlarge her territory.
00:00:35.533 --> 00:00:39.273
Expand her purpose. Let your hand be upon this moment.
00:00:39.573 --> 00:00:45.453
Saturate every word with oil and truth. break cycles, cancel every curse sent
00:00:45.453 --> 00:00:48.953
to silence her. This isn't just a podcast.
00:00:49.233 --> 00:00:53.493
This is holy ground. In Jesus' name, amen.
00:00:53.813 --> 00:00:58.953
This is your host, Connie Morris, and I welcome you back to the Diary of a Black
00:00:58.953 --> 00:01:02.233
Woman podcast with our Faith on the Go series.
00:01:02.553 --> 00:01:08.133
We know faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God, and this is why
00:01:08.133 --> 00:01:11.933
this space was created for your quiet moments, your work days,
00:01:12.173 --> 00:01:18.753
your commutes, and those in-between places where your spirit just needs to be refilled.
00:01:18.953 --> 00:01:23.093
Faith on the go is for the times when you're fighting battles not yet won,
00:01:23.253 --> 00:01:26.033
but already finished in Christ.
00:01:26.293 --> 00:01:29.993
It's for the ones who keep believing, keep pressing, and keep walking,
00:01:29.993 --> 00:01:32.653
even when the road gets long.
00:01:33.093 --> 00:01:39.533
So wherever you are today, settle in and let the Word of God strengthen your faith on the go.
00:01:39.933 --> 00:01:48.453
Today's topic for our day one is a mind of obedience, surrendered to the Father's will.
00:01:48.753 --> 00:01:54.313
The key scriptures today is found in Philippians chapter 2 verse 8.
00:01:54.493 --> 00:01:59.453
He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death
00:01:59.868 --> 00:02:05.868
on a cross. Even if we think about this, we know that this was a hard thing, right?
00:02:06.068 --> 00:02:13.708
And so we know Jesus humbled himself by becoming obedient even unto death, death on the cross.
00:02:13.988 --> 00:02:17.088
So let's see this through Jesus' eyes.
00:02:17.268 --> 00:02:22.988
When God says, let this mind be in you, he invited us to think like his son,
00:02:22.988 --> 00:02:25.868
to see life through the lens of surrender.
00:02:26.128 --> 00:02:30.948
Obedience is not a rule to follow. It is a relationship to protect.
00:02:31.308 --> 00:02:38.268
It's what kept Jesus aligned with his father through every season of his life.
00:02:38.428 --> 00:02:39.948
We know God loves obedience.
00:02:40.268 --> 00:02:44.988
And so if you get aligned with God, with that mind of obedience,
00:02:45.288 --> 00:02:47.308
then you too will love obedience.
00:02:47.628 --> 00:02:51.168
And that will continue to grow in that relationship. You know,
00:02:51.268 --> 00:02:53.928
when you have someone you trust, say, for instance, your parents,
00:02:54.068 --> 00:02:57.928
and they tell you to do something when you're a child, it seemed like you didn't have a choice.
00:02:58.188 --> 00:03:01.088
But in reality, we did, right? We did it.
00:03:01.328 --> 00:03:05.048
And after a while, we realized that doing that one thing for our parents,
00:03:05.108 --> 00:03:07.548
it was because we didn't want to.
00:03:07.688 --> 00:03:09.908
It was our attitude more than anything that had to change.
00:03:10.148 --> 00:03:14.528
But once we did it, we realized that when we are obedient to our father and
00:03:14.528 --> 00:03:16.328
our mother, the Bible says we will be blessed.
00:03:16.448 --> 00:03:21.528
But also, you see those blessings as you get older. they begin to trust you.
00:03:21.688 --> 00:03:25.948
Can you go do this? Can you go do that? Can I trust you in the little things
00:03:25.948 --> 00:03:27.628
so that I can give you more?
00:03:27.888 --> 00:03:32.488
And so those little acts of obedience as a child gives us the attitude like,
00:03:32.648 --> 00:03:35.608
okay, if I clean my room up, that's not going to hurt anything because I know
00:03:35.608 --> 00:03:38.628
I'm going to ask my mom to use the car this weekend or I'm going to ask for
00:03:38.628 --> 00:03:41.268
money for this event that I want to go to.
00:03:41.448 --> 00:03:44.968
And she says, yes, but she'll ask me, did I clean my room?
00:03:45.168 --> 00:03:50.888
Like that was a test, right? So even Jesus, as a young boy in the temple courts,
00:03:51.168 --> 00:03:57.388
Jesus looked at his anxious parents and said, did you know I must be about my father's business?
00:03:57.905 --> 00:04:04.385
It was something ingrained in him at a very young age. That moment wasn't a childless defiance.
00:04:04.565 --> 00:04:06.585
It was divine awareness.
00:04:06.885 --> 00:04:11.405
He already understood that his life was an assignment.
00:04:12.285 --> 00:04:16.865
Think about this though. When we know that our life is an assignment,
00:04:17.145 --> 00:04:19.405
we won't go wasting time.
00:04:19.885 --> 00:04:23.505
It's interesting that I say that because when I look back at my life,
00:04:23.785 --> 00:04:27.865
I feel like I wasted a lot of time. But as I'm getting older,
00:04:28.065 --> 00:04:30.145
I'm realizing this is an assignment.
00:04:30.465 --> 00:04:34.905
Everything I do is part of God's bigger plan for me. It says,
00:04:35.125 --> 00:04:38.165
I'm going to continue. Obedience began before the miracles.
00:04:38.465 --> 00:04:43.225
Remember Jesus did miracles, but he had to be obedient to first his father in
00:04:43.225 --> 00:04:47.145
heaven, which means he had to follow what his parents said on earth,
00:04:47.445 --> 00:04:49.105
his natural parents that God gave him.
00:04:49.285 --> 00:04:53.145
And we know that if you're obedient in the little things, when the big things
00:04:53.145 --> 00:04:57.825
happen, you won't draw back like Jesus didn't draw back from the cross.
00:04:57.985 --> 00:05:03.885
Years later, when Jesus' ministry grew through multitudes, the scripture said,
00:05:04.305 --> 00:05:07.205
Jesus often withdrew to a lonely place and prayed.
00:05:07.625 --> 00:05:13.245
That's found in Luke 5, 16. He refused to be led by the pressure of popularity.
00:05:13.545 --> 00:05:17.925
The son of God, full of power, still stopped to listen.
00:05:18.285 --> 00:05:24.445
His secret was not strategy. It was stillness. How many of us take time to just
00:05:24.445 --> 00:05:26.965
listen in a stillness, right?
00:05:27.165 --> 00:05:31.225
In the stillness. He said, he refused to be led by pressure.
00:05:31.754 --> 00:05:38.454
Of popularity. Then came Gethsemane. Under olive trees and moonlight, he fell to his knees.
00:05:38.634 --> 00:05:41.394
Father, if you're willing, take this cup from me.
00:05:41.734 --> 00:05:46.134
Yet not my will, but your will be done. Luke 22, 42.
00:05:46.534 --> 00:05:53.534
This was obedience at its deepest when the will of heaven collides with the weakness of flesh.
00:05:53.694 --> 00:05:57.254
In that garden, surrender wasn't easy, but it was holy.
00:05:57.594 --> 00:05:59.874
Obedience opened the doorway to redemption.
00:06:00.234 --> 00:06:05.334
Finally, at Calvary's hill, with the weight of the world pressing down,
00:06:05.794 --> 00:06:09.694
Jesus declared, it is finished, John 19.30.
00:06:10.134 --> 00:06:17.794
He completed the assignment in full. Obedience wrote the last line of the greatest story ever told.
00:06:18.314 --> 00:06:23.254
Let's look at some biblical commentary to get a better understanding about Jesus
00:06:23.254 --> 00:06:25.854
having the mind of obedience.
00:06:26.194 --> 00:06:31.394
Every step Jesus took revealed that obedience is born from trust, not fear.
00:06:31.594 --> 00:06:34.434
He obeyed because he knew his father's character.
00:06:34.654 --> 00:06:41.814
He believed that love never leads to loss. That's why his submission in the garden wasn't defeat.
00:06:42.114 --> 00:06:47.794
It was victory disguised as surrender. For us, obedience is the bridge between
00:06:47.794 --> 00:06:49.714
revelation and fulfillment.
00:06:49.994 --> 00:06:55.954
We can hear God's word daily, but until we act on it, we remain spectators of
00:06:55.954 --> 00:06:59.074
the promise rather than participants in it.
00:06:59.194 --> 00:07:04.494
When your mind is renewed to trust the Father as Jesus did, obedience stops
00:07:04.494 --> 00:07:08.394
feeling heavy. It becomes a holy alignment.
00:07:08.634 --> 00:07:15.874
God's instructions are invitations, not impositions. Every yes draws you closer to his heart.
00:07:16.074 --> 00:07:18.914
Sometimes obedience means stepping forward.
00:07:19.134 --> 00:07:23.014
Other times it means standing still until he says move.
00:07:23.274 --> 00:07:27.994
Both require faith. So reflection here, I want you to ask yourself,
00:07:28.214 --> 00:07:34.434
where have I hesitated because I couldn't see the outcome? Have I been waiting for clarity?
00:07:35.112 --> 00:07:41.592
When God's already gave a command? And am I obeying because I'm afraid of the
00:07:41.592 --> 00:07:45.132
consequence or because I love the Father's will?
00:07:45.372 --> 00:07:50.932
Let the Spirit show you that obedience isn't losing control, it's gaining peace.
00:07:51.152 --> 00:07:55.532
A section I have for this devotional is walking it out like Jesus.
00:07:55.852 --> 00:08:02.552
And so I have like five different points I want to show you how to walk it out like Jesus.
00:08:02.812 --> 00:08:07.572
So you start your day in surrender. Whisper this prayer. Whisper his prayer
00:08:07.572 --> 00:08:09.912
before your feet hit the floor.
00:08:10.212 --> 00:08:15.012
Not my will, but your will be done. So we're shifting the focus.
00:08:15.452 --> 00:08:19.052
Many times we're so we focus instead of outward, right?
00:08:19.092 --> 00:08:23.232
We want to think about how this is going to affect me when we're supposed to
00:08:23.232 --> 00:08:28.492
declare, not my will, but yours be done today, Lord.
00:08:28.712 --> 00:08:31.552
That single sentence resets your day.
00:08:31.852 --> 00:08:36.472
Number two, listen before you act. Follow Jesus' rhythm.
00:08:36.912 --> 00:08:41.872
Withdraw, pray, then move. Luke 5.16 and John 5.19.
00:08:42.192 --> 00:08:46.972
Create quiet moments where obedience can be born.
00:08:47.192 --> 00:08:54.072
Obedience is born in the quiet time when you're listening to the whispers of Jesus on what's next.
00:08:54.392 --> 00:09:00.792
Trust the timing. Number three, Jesus waited 30 years for three years of ministry.
00:09:01.012 --> 00:09:05.952
Hidden seasons prepare you for visible purpose. Ecclesiastic.
00:09:06.665 --> 00:09:12.685
Number four, obey when it costs. Love something, ask for a sacrifice.
00:09:13.045 --> 00:09:17.925
So even when it costs, when you love something, it does require sacrifice.
00:09:18.585 --> 00:09:24.505
Jesus chose the cross because he saw resurrection ahead. Hebrews 12, 2.
00:09:25.245 --> 00:09:29.685
And number five, finish what you started. Let his words be yours.
00:09:29.885 --> 00:09:35.165
I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
00:09:35.165 --> 00:09:38.365
God is saying like, can you finish the work I gave you to do?
00:09:38.625 --> 00:09:43.905
Seeing your life as an assignment, it shifts your focus. You're not going to waste time.
00:09:44.165 --> 00:09:48.125
I say sometimes I'm meant to daydream, you know, like I do. I like to take a
00:09:48.125 --> 00:09:51.085
moment and maybe watch a few videos or listen to a couple podcasts.
00:09:51.465 --> 00:09:57.705
But overall, that's not my meat to eat for the day. My meat is the word of God.
00:09:57.905 --> 00:10:00.605
What can I learn about Jesus today? Let's pray.
00:10:00.945 --> 00:10:04.885
Father, thank you for giving me the perfect example in Jesus.
00:10:05.165 --> 00:10:08.365
Teach me to recognize your voice above all others.
00:10:08.545 --> 00:10:13.965
When my plan collides with your purpose, help me to choose surrender over stubbornness.
00:10:14.085 --> 00:10:21.385
When obedience feels costly, remind me of Calvary, where love obeyed unto death and gave me life.
00:10:21.585 --> 00:10:26.645
Let my daily yes become a testimony of trust. In Jesus' name, amen.
00:10:27.105 --> 00:10:32.485
Let's decree, I have the mind of Christ. I trust the Father's heart and obey
00:10:32.485 --> 00:10:36.025
his word. My steps are guided by faith, not fear.
00:10:36.265 --> 00:10:43.405
Like Jesus, I say yes before I understand, knowing his will leads to a perfect peace and purpose.
00:10:43.785 --> 00:10:48.745
Where is God asking you to take a step of obedience that feels uncomfortable?
00:10:48.765 --> 00:10:55.485
And how can you mirror Jesus' trust in the faith in the Father as you respond?
00:10:55.885 --> 00:10:59.485
Where is he taking you? Where does he want you to go? Remember,
00:10:59.665 --> 00:11:02.465
our life is an assignment. it.
00:11:02.876 --> 00:11:07.356
Assignment unto God. If you were born again Christian, then you know that your
00:11:07.356 --> 00:11:11.236
life has been dedicated to Jesus and he has plans for you.
00:11:11.396 --> 00:11:15.636
He also has a way to get to those plans, right? So just pay attention.
00:11:15.876 --> 00:11:19.376
You've been listening to Faith on the Go series with your host Connie Morris
00:11:19.376 --> 00:11:21.516
from the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:11:21.716 --> 00:11:26.676
I pray this word energized your faith and reminded you of God's promise.
00:11:26.896 --> 00:11:30.136
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.
00:11:30.156 --> 00:11:34.896
It should not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please,
00:11:34.936 --> 00:11:38.056
and it shall prosper in the thing which I sent it.
00:11:38.416 --> 00:11:46.576
Isaiah 55, 11. Every prayer, every decree, every act of obedience, it adds up to something.
00:11:46.756 --> 00:11:52.676
If God said it, that means it will not return back to him. Some scriptures said empty-handed.
00:11:52.896 --> 00:11:58.016
He put his hand out, and when he pulls it back, he's not going to be empty because
00:11:58.016 --> 00:12:02.336
it's going to be full of all the things that you have done in obedience. Amen.
00:12:02.736 --> 00:12:08.196
And be confident of this. He who began a good work in you should carry it on
00:12:08.196 --> 00:12:11.156
to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
00:12:11.476 --> 00:12:18.036
Philippians 1.6. Remember, it's him who gave you the work and it's him that's gonna finish it in you.
00:12:18.196 --> 00:12:24.996
So keep believing, keep walking, keep trusting because God will finish what he started in you.
00:12:25.136 --> 00:12:30.076
And I'll see you on the next episode. Thank you for listening to this episode.
00:12:30.316 --> 00:12:37.816
And before we close out, I want to speak a word of promise over you from Jeremiah 29, 11 through 14.
00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:43.719
Father God, you declared, I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper
00:12:43.719 --> 00:12:48.219
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
00:12:48.519 --> 00:12:52.939
So today we receive that truth. You said when we call on you,
00:12:53.079 --> 00:12:55.159
you will listen. So we pray.
00:12:55.339 --> 00:13:00.659
You said that when we seek you with our hearts, you will be found. So we pursue.
00:13:00.919 --> 00:13:06.599
You said you will restore us from captivity. So we declare freedom over every
00:13:06.599 --> 00:13:10.659
place where our listeners feel stuck, silenced, or small.
00:13:10.899 --> 00:13:16.699
Thank you for always drawing near when we show up in faith. In Jesus' name, amen.
