Host Connie Morris explores Matthew 9:36 and the heart of Jesus, showing how true compassion is a movement from mercy that sees people, not problems. Welcome to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast with your host,
00:00:16.693 --> 00:00:21.413
Connie Morris, where healing has a voice and truth is no longer silent.
00:00:21.653 --> 00:00:26.353
Father God, like Jabez, we cry out that thou would bless us indeed.
00:00:26.913 --> 00:00:32.293
Bless every woman listening beyond trauma, beyond limits, beyond what she thought
00:00:32.293 --> 00:00:35.053
was possible. Enlarge her territory.
00:00:35.533 --> 00:00:39.273
Expand her purpose. Let your hand be upon this moment.
00:00:39.553 --> 00:00:45.453
Saturate every word with oil and truth. break cycles, cancel every curse sent
00:00:45.453 --> 00:00:48.973
to silence her. This isn't just a podcast.
00:00:49.373 --> 00:00:53.493
This is holy ground. In Jesus' name, amen.
00:00:53.813 --> 00:00:57.273
Hello, and welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:00:57.473 --> 00:01:02.893
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and we're continuing our series on faith on the go.
00:01:03.113 --> 00:01:07.593
We know that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
00:01:07.833 --> 00:01:11.853
That's why this space was created for your quiet moments, your work days,
00:01:12.013 --> 00:01:14.113
your commutes, and those in-between
00:01:14.113 --> 00:01:18.973
places where your spirit just needs to be refilled or recharged.
00:01:19.333 --> 00:01:23.733
Faith on a Go is for those times when you're fighting battles not yet won,
00:01:23.953 --> 00:01:26.053
but already finished in Christ.
00:01:26.595 --> 00:01:30.375
It's for the ones who keep believing, keep pressing, keep walking,
00:01:30.375 --> 00:01:33.455
even when the road seems long.
00:01:33.935 --> 00:01:38.355
So wherever you are today, settle in and let the word of God strengthen your
00:01:38.355 --> 00:01:41.135
faith while you are on the go.
00:01:41.355 --> 00:01:48.615
Today we're going to go to day three, a mind of compassion moved by others' pain.
00:01:48.835 --> 00:01:54.075
The key scripture is found in Matthew 9, verse 36, and it reads,
00:01:54.075 --> 00:01:59.995
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed
00:01:59.995 --> 00:02:03.435
and helpless like sheep without a shepherd.
00:02:03.675 --> 00:02:08.535
Everywhere Jesus went, he carried the presence of love. He didn't look at people
00:02:08.535 --> 00:02:11.095
and see problems. He saw possibilities.
00:02:11.495 --> 00:02:15.115
He didn't see the crowd demands. He saw their needs.
00:02:15.315 --> 00:02:22.855
The gospel tells us when he saw the crowds, he had compassion. Matthew 9.
00:02:23.472 --> 00:02:31.012
Verse 36, the word compassion in the Greek means to feel deeply from the inner
00:02:31.012 --> 00:02:33.432
parts. It's not a passing emotion.
00:02:33.972 --> 00:02:38.352
It's a movement of mercy that comes from the soul of God himself.
00:02:38.732 --> 00:02:43.712
When Jesus was hungry, he fed them, Matthew 8, 2. When he was sick,
00:02:44.012 --> 00:02:46.392
he healed them, Matthew 14, 14.
00:02:46.672 --> 00:02:52.992
When he saw the grieving, he wept with them, John 11, 35. and when he saw sinners,
00:02:53.252 --> 00:02:56.252
he forgave them, John 8, 10 through 11.
00:02:56.492 --> 00:03:02.672
Every act of compassion was a mirror of heaven's heart, love made visible through human hands.
00:03:02.792 --> 00:03:07.592
The commentary reads, The mind of Christ feels what the Father feels.
00:03:07.912 --> 00:03:12.092
Compassion was not weakness, it was power clothed in empathy.
00:03:12.332 --> 00:03:18.052
When Jesus touched a leopard in Mark 1, 41, he didn't fear infection,
00:03:18.292 --> 00:03:20.212
he offered restoration.
00:03:20.572 --> 00:03:25.412
When others avoided the woman at the well, he sat beside her,
00:03:25.712 --> 00:03:31.312
John 4, 7, proving that love crosses barriers of shame and culture.
00:03:31.512 --> 00:03:38.892
This is the kind of thinking God calls us to, seeing pain not as an inconvenience but as an invitation.
00:03:39.452 --> 00:03:44.832
Compassion moves us from judgment to mercy, from distance to closeness,
00:03:45.112 --> 00:03:47.832
from talking about love to living it.
00:03:48.072 --> 00:03:53.872
Ephesians 4.32 tells us, be kind and compassionate to one another,
00:03:54.292 --> 00:03:58.792
forgiving each other just as Christ has forgiven you.
00:03:59.052 --> 00:04:04.352
Compassion is the language of heaven. It's how Jesus looked at the world through
00:04:04.352 --> 00:04:08.712
eyes that saw brokenness, but never stop believing in healing.
00:04:08.912 --> 00:04:13.012
The mind of Christ allows us to feel without being overwhelmed.
00:04:13.632 --> 00:04:17.772
To care without collapsing, and to act without hesitation.
00:04:18.052 --> 00:04:22.372
Sometimes it's a gentle word. Sometimes it's a silent prayer.
00:04:22.632 --> 00:04:27.032
Sometimes it's simply being present with someone in pain.
00:04:27.272 --> 00:04:32.132
Reflection, I want you to ask yourself, how do I truly see the people around
00:04:32.132 --> 00:04:35.232
me? Or have I grown numb to their needs?
00:04:35.412 --> 00:04:40.092
When I encounter someone hurting, do I respond with avoidance or with grace?
00:04:40.092 --> 00:04:44.832
Can I allow God to use my own scars to bring comfort to others?
00:04:45.152 --> 00:04:47.132
Let's walk it out like Jesus.
00:04:47.652 --> 00:04:52.652
Number one, see people, not problems. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes
00:04:52.652 --> 00:04:56.892
to someone who needs encouragement today. Matthew 9, 36.
00:04:57.432 --> 00:05:02.372
And you know, when you ask him for this, it can happen in the grocery store, at the mall.
00:05:02.752 --> 00:05:07.812
It can happen at your workplace, when you get gas. something can happen in your
00:05:07.812 --> 00:05:11.032
everyday walk around, right?
00:05:11.232 --> 00:05:15.572
That you can ask the Holy Spirit to give him eyes like Jesus,
00:05:15.912 --> 00:05:21.192
the compassion that Jesus has so that we don't see people as problems.
00:05:21.512 --> 00:05:24.932
There's one thing that's going on in the world today, and I think it's fed through
00:05:24.932 --> 00:05:29.852
the media, and it mentions this a lot, and it really bugs me.
00:05:29.892 --> 00:05:36.632
It says illegal aliens, or we have these Hispanic people working everywhere.
00:05:36.892 --> 00:05:40.272
And it's like, okay, they always worked everywhere.
00:05:40.472 --> 00:05:45.032
And the illegal part is the press. Everybody here is not illegal.
00:05:45.232 --> 00:05:49.732
So when you start to see people through that illegal eyes, then you start to
00:05:49.732 --> 00:05:53.752
have some kind of feelings, feeling some kind of way, when that's not even a
00:05:53.752 --> 00:05:56.212
proper way to feel towards God's people.
00:05:56.532 --> 00:06:00.172
Matter of fact, I can say this, honestly, probably none of your business because
00:06:00.172 --> 00:06:04.232
they don't wear illegal around their neck. So you would never know.
00:06:04.412 --> 00:06:08.412
But when you start grouping people in boxes and in shapes and in sizes,
00:06:08.712 --> 00:06:11.492
then you are not having the compassion.
00:06:12.039 --> 00:06:20.339
Of Christ. So ask God to see people not as problems, but for someone who needs encouragement today.
00:06:20.819 --> 00:06:27.259
Number two, move toward the hurting. Jesus touched a leopard before healing him.
00:06:27.559 --> 00:06:31.179
Mark 1 41, compassion takes the first step.
00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:34.499
And so many people avoid the one that's hurting.
00:06:34.719 --> 00:06:38.659
Check this out. There's someone homeless probably near you. I mean,
00:06:38.719 --> 00:06:39.659
it's happening everywhere.
00:06:39.859 --> 00:06:42.919
Why don't you pull up to them? You have more than enough.
00:06:43.019 --> 00:06:46.839
You have a house to stay in, have more than one pair of shoes to wear,
00:06:47.079 --> 00:06:49.719
more than one shirt, one pair of underwear.
00:06:49.899 --> 00:06:55.239
You are doing pretty good in society, right? And so why don't you move up and
00:06:55.239 --> 00:06:57.699
ask, how can I help you today?
00:06:58.039 --> 00:07:02.639
And they can say what they want. And if you can't help, you can.
00:07:02.859 --> 00:07:06.479
If you can't, you can say, all I have is this today.
00:07:06.719 --> 00:07:11.899
All I have is prayer for you today. Can I pray for you today? Don't you have a voice?
00:07:12.299 --> 00:07:16.739
Right? So we move towards the hurting. And as you sit and talk with them,
00:07:16.939 --> 00:07:20.099
you can probably find them every day at that same spot.
00:07:20.379 --> 00:07:23.959
Don't mean you have to give to them all the time, follow what the Lord has for
00:07:23.959 --> 00:07:28.699
you, but then you can move towards the hurting. Maybe they just want to be seen.
00:07:29.039 --> 00:07:31.559
Listen listen before you fix.
00:07:31.879 --> 00:07:35.979
Like Jesus, you know, Jesus met the women at the well. He is a prophet.
00:07:36.279 --> 00:07:39.559
He probably knew all about her before he even came there. He probably there
00:07:39.559 --> 00:07:43.199
because of his prophetic gifting or his obedience to God.
00:07:43.459 --> 00:07:47.799
But how many times do we listen to people? We assume they need this when actually
00:07:47.799 --> 00:07:49.219
they might not even need that.
00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:52.979
You assume they need money. They might just need a job so they can make money.
00:07:53.239 --> 00:07:55.939
Remember, teach them how to fish so they can fish for themselves,
00:07:56.259 --> 00:07:59.679
right? Right. And so learning how to listen before you fix.
00:07:59.859 --> 00:08:02.779
How about learning how to listen before you judge?
00:08:03.039 --> 00:08:09.559
And number four, let compassion interrupt you. It's never convenient when someone needs help, is it?
00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:16.639
I mean, we have our set schedule and we love to follow it, but yet it's never convenient. But let
00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:20.700
your time be interrupted by God.
00:08:20.860 --> 00:08:22.420
Let compassion interrupt you.
00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:28.120
Jesus has a way to heal one when another touches garment. Matthew 5.30.
00:08:28.420 --> 00:08:32.640
Ministry often happens in divine interruptions.
00:08:33.080 --> 00:08:36.160
And number five, pray for the eyes of Christ.
00:08:36.340 --> 00:08:41.260
Ask daily, Lord, help me to see what you see. 2 Corinthians 5.16.
00:08:41.500 --> 00:08:45.200
Remember this devotion was about getting more and more like Jesus.
00:08:45.340 --> 00:08:49.020
We just finished maybe a double series of the Bride of Christ.
00:08:49.240 --> 00:08:53.380
And so if you didn't learn nothing from that one, this is going to pretty much
00:08:53.380 --> 00:08:56.880
help you on this phase, but not be a negative, but like, hey,
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:59.100
if you love that series, you're going to love this series.
00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:02.600
If you didn't love that series, hey, you're going to love this series anyway.
00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:06.800
All right, so let's pray. Father, thank you for showing me your heart through Jesus.
00:09:07.060 --> 00:09:11.820
Teach me to see people the way you see them through eyes of mercy and truth.
00:09:11.820 --> 00:09:14.520
Break down every wall of indifference in me.
00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:20.340
Let my heart be moved, my hands be willing, and my words bring life.
00:09:20.520 --> 00:09:26.240
Use me to be the light to the weary, the comfort to the broken,
00:09:26.260 --> 00:09:28.060
and the hope to the hopeless.
00:09:28.380 --> 00:09:31.480
In Jesus' name, amen. I have the mind of Christ.
00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:38.580
My heart beats with compassion. I see others through God's eyes and respond with his love.
00:09:38.780 --> 00:09:41.420
I am moved by mercy, not judgment.
00:09:41.820 --> 00:09:46.380
And I bring healing wherever I go. Wherever we go, we...
00:09:46.554 --> 00:09:52.554
Carry that healing with us. So remember that. You carry that encouragement with you. Remember that.
00:09:52.814 --> 00:09:56.534
You carry humility with you. Remember that.
00:09:56.694 --> 00:10:00.994
And most important, you carry his compassion with you.
00:10:01.314 --> 00:10:05.934
Remember that. When you think about this, where can you allow compassion to
00:10:05.934 --> 00:10:10.994
move you from observation into action today, right now?
00:10:11.154 --> 00:10:13.434
And what steps of love can you make?
00:10:14.054 --> 00:10:17.474
What steps can you take to mirror the heart of Jesus?
00:10:18.094 --> 00:10:21.714
Compassion. Just a quick reminder. See people not as problem,
00:10:22.174 --> 00:10:23.534
right? Move towards the hurting.
00:10:23.794 --> 00:10:29.934
Listen before you fix. Let compassion interrupt you and pray with the eyes of Christ.
00:10:30.234 --> 00:10:33.414
You have been listening to Faith on the Go with your host, Connie Morris,
00:10:33.554 --> 00:10:35.694
from the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:10:35.854 --> 00:10:40.434
I hope you're enjoying this. I hope you are putting your faith to work,
00:10:40.634 --> 00:10:44.494
especially with this compassion series. You know, there's people hurting all
00:10:44.494 --> 00:10:46.074
around us that we don't even know.
00:10:46.374 --> 00:10:51.194
But remember, as you help others, you'll find out that your needs will be met.
00:10:51.354 --> 00:10:54.894
I don't know how God does that, right? So I pray that this word energizes your
00:10:54.894 --> 00:10:57.214
faith and reminds you of God's promise.
00:10:57.414 --> 00:11:02.714
It says His word will not return void in Isaiah 55, 11.
00:11:02.934 --> 00:11:07.734
It mentions in other translations that His hand, it won't return empty.
00:11:07.734 --> 00:11:13.674
I mean, God is expecting you to do something, to not just have the mind of Jesus,
00:11:14.014 --> 00:11:17.974
right, but to also have the compassion of Jesus.
00:11:18.254 --> 00:11:23.494
But know this from Philippians 1.6, that he who began a work in you will carry
00:11:23.494 --> 00:11:27.134
it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.
00:11:27.374 --> 00:11:30.954
He's going to finish the work in you. So don't stop believing,
00:11:31.294 --> 00:11:33.754
keep walking by faith, and keep trusting.
00:11:33.994 --> 00:11:39.034
And I'll see you on the next episode. Thank you for listening to this episode.
00:11:39.274 --> 00:11:46.754
And before we close out, I want to speak a word of promise over you from Jeremiah 29, 11 through 14.
00:11:47.365 --> 00:11:52.685
Father God, you declared, I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper
00:11:52.685 --> 00:11:57.185
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
00:11:57.365 --> 00:11:59.765
So today we receive that truth.
00:12:00.045 --> 00:12:04.125
You said when we call on you, you will listen. So we pray.
00:12:04.305 --> 00:12:09.625
You said that when we seek you with our hearts, you will be found. So we pursue.
00:12:09.885 --> 00:12:15.565
You said you will restore us from captivity. So we declare freedom over every
00:12:15.565 --> 00:12:19.625
place where our listeners feel stuck, silenced, or small.
00:12:19.865 --> 00:12:25.685
Thank you for always drawing near when we show up in faith. In Jesus' name, amen.
