Sin City: Ep. 4: How Daniel Kept His Clarity

Host Connie Morris reframes Babylon as "Sin City," warning listeners about a culture that renames, seduces, and normalizes sin. Using Daniel and his friends as examples, she shows how refusing the cultural "Kool-Aid" preserves discernment, integrity, and God-given purpose.
This short episode challenges you to evaluate what you consume, resist conformity, and hold fast to God’s promises, concluding with encouragement from Jeremiah 29:11.

00:00:10.013 --> 00:00:15.593
Welcome to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast, where we pray bold prayers,
00:00:16.073 --> 00:00:19.953
walk in bold faith, and expect a bold God to show up.
00:00:20.093 --> 00:00:25.673
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and we open every episode with the same unshakable
00:00:25.673 --> 00:00:29.613
confidence Jabez had in 1 Chronicles 4.10.
00:00:29.893 --> 00:00:35.613
Lord, bless me indeed, enlarge my territory, let your hand be with me,
00:00:35.973 --> 00:00:39.973
keep me from evil, and keep me from causing pain. And the Bible says,
00:00:40.493 --> 00:00:41.833
God granted his request.
00:00:42.033 --> 00:00:45.573
So if you're here today, get ready, because we're praying big,
00:00:45.953 --> 00:00:51.813
believing big, and walking in everything God promised. Let's begin.
00:01:01.380 --> 00:01:04.900
Hello and welcome back to Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:01:05.360 --> 00:01:10.680
I'm your host Connie Morris and today we're continuing a similar series that
00:01:10.680 --> 00:01:16.040
I started but I switched it up a little bit and it's going to be titled Sin City.
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:19.640
Instead of using Babylon I'm using the word Sin City.
00:01:19.960 --> 00:01:25.760
So we're going to continue episode four living in Sin City drinking the Kool-Aid.
00:01:25.960 --> 00:01:29.080
So we are living in what I call Sin City.
00:01:29.440 --> 00:01:34.780
And there used to be a show out way back in the day called Sin City. And all they did was sin.
00:01:34.980 --> 00:01:40.860
And so I wanted to change the theme of the podcast to Sin City because many
00:01:40.860 --> 00:01:42.160
people don't understand Babylon.
00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:46.660
They don't understand no Kool-Aid. And so when I say Sin City,
00:01:46.980 --> 00:01:50.300
that will actually go like, oh, that will get your attention.
00:01:50.580 --> 00:01:54.600
And so I wanted to change it to something that can relate to everyone.
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:59.700
And so when we talk about Sin City, we always talked about, we hear about that
00:01:59.700 --> 00:02:02.860
when we talk about going to like Las Vegas.
00:02:02.920 --> 00:02:05.920
Remember it says Las Vegas, it's titled really Sin City.
00:02:06.060 --> 00:02:10.020
And they always tell you what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
00:02:10.640 --> 00:02:13.840
But it's starting to be like what happens not just in Vegas,
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:16.420
but in any part of the United States.
00:02:16.420 --> 00:02:23.900
And people are taking their sin across to Dubai and over to different areas, trying out new things.
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:26.740
And so it's kind of like a contagion happening.
00:02:26.940 --> 00:02:30.840
And so I wanted to make it more down the earth for you.
00:02:30.980 --> 00:02:35.280
And then we're still going to use our character, Daniel and the three Hebrew
00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:40.740
boys, Meshach, Abednego, and Shadrach. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
00:02:40.920 --> 00:02:45.600
We're still going to use them as our Bible characters. I wanted to get your
00:02:45.600 --> 00:02:49.920
attention on the seriousness of this Kool-Aid drinking that's happening.
00:02:50.631 --> 00:02:54.951
So when Sin City is not about the lights, the clubs, or the casinos,
00:02:55.211 --> 00:03:00.311
it's about a system that makes sin feel normal and truth feel extreme.
00:03:00.531 --> 00:03:04.371
So if you're a person that's trying to walk in integrity, walk in truth,
00:03:04.591 --> 00:03:10.991
walk in holiness, and you feel like you're the only one, don't let that surprise you.
00:03:11.211 --> 00:03:15.991
People aren't just sinning, they're believing lies and they are defending them.
00:03:16.531 --> 00:03:20.731
And what does that mean when I say drink the Kool-Aid? We talked about that already.
00:03:20.951 --> 00:03:25.091
What does Kool-Aid really mean? Kool-Aid is not rebellion.
00:03:25.351 --> 00:03:27.731
It's an agreement with deception.
00:03:28.371 --> 00:03:31.291
I'm going to drink the Kool-Aid. I don't care what you say.
00:03:31.411 --> 00:03:37.051
I have a friend who lost her job. And I said, now I guess it's time for Jesus. And she says, nope.
00:03:37.631 --> 00:03:40.931
And I said, okay. Okay. So I said, we'll keep it going.
00:03:41.151 --> 00:03:45.951
And so what does the Bible tells us? What did it warn us? In Romans 1.25,
00:03:46.331 --> 00:03:50.651
it says they exchanged the truth of God for a lie.
00:03:51.071 --> 00:03:53.511
Notice it doesn't say they were forced.
00:03:54.111 --> 00:04:00.571
It says they exchanged. That means they chose what sounded better.
00:04:00.991 --> 00:04:07.591
Now that's Sin City. We talked about Babylon was Sin City and Daniel lived there.
00:04:07.811 --> 00:04:11.571
The Bible doesn't pretend that Babylon was neutral.
00:04:11.851 --> 00:04:13.611
Babylon was educated.
00:04:14.471 --> 00:04:19.571
Babylon was advanced. Babylon was cultured. Babylon was powerful.
00:04:20.151 --> 00:04:26.191
And Babylon was godless. Daniel chapter 1 tells us exactly how it started.
00:04:26.691 --> 00:04:33.451
King ordered Asphanus to bring into the king's service some of the Israelites,
00:04:33.811 --> 00:04:41.091
young men without defect, quick to understand, qualified to serve in the king's palace.
00:04:41.091 --> 00:04:45.371
Babylon didn't pick the broken, it picked the best.
00:04:45.551 --> 00:04:51.291
That's important because deception always targets people with potential.
00:04:52.252 --> 00:04:57.592
God allowed the placement, not the poison. When scripture says something that
00:04:57.592 --> 00:05:03.892
should sober us is that the Lord gave Joachim, king of Judah, into his hand.
00:05:04.252 --> 00:05:10.992
This may sound like a review, but let it sink in that God controls everything.
00:05:11.572 --> 00:05:19.452
God allowed them to live in Babylon. Well, nowhere does God tell them to become Babylon.
00:05:19.832 --> 00:05:24.992
That's the mistake people make today. God may allow you to live in Sin City
00:05:24.992 --> 00:05:27.212
or wherever he's allowed you to be,
00:05:27.432 --> 00:05:31.452
wherever he's allowed you to live, and it might look like all hell is breaking
00:05:31.452 --> 00:05:34.912
out, but he did not tell you to become like them.
00:05:35.012 --> 00:05:42.172
But he never authorizes you to drink the Kool-Aid or whatever they are serving.
00:05:42.392 --> 00:05:45.792
The first Kool-Aid is renaming. We talked about that.
00:05:46.152 --> 00:05:51.512
Babylon's first move wasn't food, there was identity. The chief official gave them new names.
00:05:51.812 --> 00:05:59.172
Daniel 1.7, every Hebrew name honored God. Every Babylonian name honored idols.
00:05:59.432 --> 00:06:01.832
This was spiritual identity theft.
00:06:02.372 --> 00:06:06.852
Babylon understood something modern culture understands very well.
00:06:07.529 --> 00:06:10.749
If I rename you, I can reshape you.
00:06:11.169 --> 00:06:15.029
And scripture tells us God warned against this long ago.
00:06:15.389 --> 00:06:22.489
I have called you by name. You are mine. Isaiah 43.1. Babylon renames.
00:06:22.729 --> 00:06:24.409
God claims.
00:06:24.729 --> 00:06:30.229
The second Kool-Aid was compromised disguised as comfort. Then came the food.
00:06:31.069 --> 00:06:37.609
The king assigned them daily amount of food and wine from the king's table. Daniel 1.5.
00:06:37.909 --> 00:06:40.629
This wasn't starvation. This was luxury.
00:06:41.009 --> 00:06:48.209
Babylon didn't starve Daniel. It tried to seduce him. And that's where the real story begins.
00:06:48.689 --> 00:06:56.669
Daniel 1.8 tells us that Daniel, but Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine.
00:06:56.949 --> 00:06:59.869
The document made this clear.
00:07:00.529 --> 00:07:05.529
The Bible makes this clear. This was not about diet. It was about participation.
00:07:06.409 --> 00:07:12.589
Once you eat from the table, you accept the house values. Now that's the Kool-Aid.
00:07:13.336 --> 00:07:17.756
While you can't sit there and eat a man's food and then tell him,
00:07:17.996 --> 00:07:21.336
you know, I don't believe in your God. I don't want to serve you.
00:07:21.636 --> 00:07:26.376
I'm not like you, but you're eating at my table. You're eating what I serve
00:07:26.376 --> 00:07:28.616
you. Now, serving can be different, too.
00:07:29.356 --> 00:07:34.336
Why Daniel saw that what others missed. Daniel understood what scripture says later.
00:07:34.536 --> 00:07:37.756
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, 12-2.
00:07:38.336 --> 00:07:43.376
Conformity doesn't feel evil. It feels reasonable. It feels like everybody's
00:07:43.376 --> 00:07:45.156
doing it. God understands.
00:07:45.676 --> 00:07:52.936
Times have changed. But scripture says, Isaiah 520, woe to those who call evil good and good evil.
00:07:53.456 --> 00:07:55.696
That's sin city language.
00:07:56.476 --> 00:08:02.096
What happens when you don't drink the Kool-Aid? Daniel refused and God responded.
00:08:02.396 --> 00:08:07.816
At the end of 10 days, they looked healthier and better nourished than any of
00:08:07.816 --> 00:08:09.976
the young men who ate the royal food.
00:08:09.976 --> 00:08:14.916
And then this, to these four young men, God gave knowledge and understanding,
00:08:15.176 --> 00:08:20.016
and Daniel could understand vision and dreams, Daniel 1.17.
00:08:20.436 --> 00:08:23.556
The sermon came because he refused to drink.
00:08:23.976 --> 00:08:28.216
That's the part people don't want to hear. When you drink the Kool-Aid,
00:08:28.416 --> 00:08:32.416
you don't just lose holiness, you lose clarity.
00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:37.400
How is Sin City today? It uses the same strategy.
00:08:37.700 --> 00:08:42.180
Today, Babylon doesn't demand worship. It demands agreement.
00:08:42.780 --> 00:08:47.860
Scripture warns us in Matthew 24, 4, take heed that no one deceives you,
00:08:48.140 --> 00:08:50.540
not persecute you, deceives.
00:08:50.740 --> 00:08:56.980
Because deception works best when it sounds loving, modern, and compassionate.
00:08:57.780 --> 00:09:03.520
And scripture says the result looks like this. 2 Timothy tells us it looks like
00:09:03.520 --> 00:09:07.280
this, having a form of godliness but denying its power.
00:09:07.540 --> 00:09:13.120
2 Timothy 3.5. That's Kool-Aid Christianity. A warning to you.
00:09:13.700 --> 00:09:17.160
Daniel didn't escape Babylon. He outlived it.
00:09:17.380 --> 00:09:22.040
He served under multiple kings because he never surrendered his discernment.
00:09:22.420 --> 00:09:27.420
So here's a real question. What have you been consuming? ideas,
00:09:27.800 --> 00:09:33.720
beliefs, narrative that don't come from God, but feel harmless enough to tolerate.
00:09:34.140 --> 00:09:37.520
Because once you drink it, you will start defending it.
00:09:37.980 --> 00:09:42.960
And scripture says, wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction.
00:09:43.300 --> 00:09:47.060
And many enter through it. Matthew 7, 13.
00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:52.140
Many. Soul city is full. The Kool-Aid is flowing.
00:09:52.440 --> 00:09:55.900
The question is not whether it's available. the question
00:09:55.900 --> 00:09:59.540
is whether you will say no and that's
00:09:59.540 --> 00:10:03.180

Before we leave, I want to speak the word that I close with every time because
00:11:23.443 --> 00:11:28.023
somebody needs this reminder today. It comes from Jeremiah 29 11 14.
00:11:28.323 --> 00:11:32.863
I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and
00:11:32.863 --> 00:11:37.003
not to harm you, plans to give you hope in a future, then you will call upon
00:11:37.003 --> 00:11:40.183
me and come and pray to me and I will listen to you.
00:11:40.363 --> 00:11:44.023
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
00:11:44.023 --> 00:11:47.663
I will be found by you, declares the Lord.
00:11:48.083 --> 00:11:52.563
Beloved, God has a plan for your life, a real one, a good one,
00:11:52.563 --> 00:11:58.543
and as long as you keep seeking him, you will find him even from the hidden places. I love you.
00:11:58.663 --> 00:12:01.023
I'm praying for you, and I'll meet you next time.
