"The Perils of Rebellion: Understanding Korah's Downfall"
In this episode of "Diary of a Black Woman," host Connie Morris delves into the theme of rebellion against divine authority, exploring the biblical narrative of Korah's rebellion as depicted in Numbers 16. Rebellion often starts subtly but leads to chaos in spiritual, emotional, and relational aspects. Connie emphasizes the destructive nature of rebellion and how it not only affects us but also our families and communities. The story of Korah serves as a cautionary tale of the severe consequences of challenging God-established order and authority.
Listeners are encouraged to reflect on areas in their lives where they may be resisting God's authority or the leadership placed over them. Connie offers practical steps to overcome the spirit of rebellion, including recognizing God's sovereignty, praying for a submissive heart, and honoring established authority. Through her heartfelt discussion, she aims to guide listeners towards more harmonious lives by trusting in God's divine order.

00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:04.337
Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:00:04.757 --> 00:00:10.477
I'm your host, Connie Morris, and I'm so excited to continue our series,
00:00:10.817 --> 00:00:13.477
The Games We Play With God.
00:00:13.757 --> 00:00:19.297
Today's episode is called Rebellion Against God's Order.
00:00:19.797 --> 00:00:26.117
Rebellion is a dangerous game to play with God. It often begins very subtly,
00:00:26.157 --> 00:00:32.397
but it can lead to spiritual, emotional, and relational chaos.
00:00:32.797 --> 00:00:38.317
So today we're going to explore the story of Korah's rebellion in Numbers 16
00:00:38.317 --> 00:00:48.397
and how God and how rejecting God's authority impacts our lives and even the people around us.
00:00:49.237 --> 00:00:54.337
You know, when I first read this Korah story, Korah, if you read it, read the whole story.
00:00:54.657 --> 00:00:58.557
It's in Numbers 16, verses 1 through 35.
00:00:58.757 --> 00:01:03.077
You can see giving you a little heads up before I get into it because I won't
00:01:03.077 --> 00:01:05.317
be able to read the whole story.
00:01:05.477 --> 00:01:11.057
But you see here in Numbers 16 that God gave Korah and his crew.
00:01:11.197 --> 00:01:15.357
I call it in his crew because a lot of times we don't rebel alone.
00:01:15.557 --> 00:01:23.557
We rebel in a crew. We get some people who listen to our story or our sad story about a leader.
00:01:23.777 --> 00:01:25.997
It could be a leader in a church. It could be a leader in the nation.
00:01:26.017 --> 00:01:30.017
It could be a friend or a foe. And we'll get a crew together.
00:01:30.337 --> 00:01:37.817
And then what happens is we just get things started and it can roll out of control sometimes.
00:01:38.217 --> 00:01:40.897
But we have to check that that's a leader.
00:01:41.417 --> 00:01:45.877
God may have put him in control, put him in that position over you.
00:01:46.477 --> 00:01:50.517
And so you might want to pray to God for him about what's going on,
00:01:50.597 --> 00:01:55.597
because maybe he's trying to do something in your life to get some of that pride
00:01:55.597 --> 00:01:57.337
and jealousy, some of the things
00:01:57.337 --> 00:02:03.217
we spoke about in the earlier series from series one, two, and three.
00:02:03.437 --> 00:02:08.637
So on series this year in our fourth episode here, let's go check on and see
00:02:08.637 --> 00:02:13.257
what Korah, what God has to say about the rebellion of Korah.
00:02:13.257 --> 00:02:18.557
So it says our focus today is number 16, 1 through 35, like I said.
00:02:18.737 --> 00:02:19.917
So here's a quick summary.
00:02:20.457 --> 00:02:26.317
Korah along with Datham, Abram, and 250 other leaders.
00:02:26.377 --> 00:02:31.597
So Korah was a leader, Datham, Abram, and Abram, not Abraham,
00:02:31.817 --> 00:02:35.977
Abram, A-B-I-R-A-M, and 250 other leaders.
00:02:36.417 --> 00:02:41.357
They already had a job in this kingdom, in this Israelite kingdom.
00:02:41.357 --> 00:02:46.577
They were Levites. So they had something powerful to do, but they were so focused
00:02:46.577 --> 00:02:48.057
on Moses. Let's keep reading.
00:02:48.757 --> 00:02:54.057
Challenged Moses and Aaron's leadership. They accused Moses of exalting himself
00:02:54.057 --> 00:02:58.277
above the assembly of the Lord. But Moses made it clear.
00:02:59.148 --> 00:03:06.048
That it wasn't about him, that it was divine order, God's divine order.
00:03:07.488 --> 00:03:13.488
Korah's rebellion wasn't just against Moses. It was against God himself.
00:03:14.008 --> 00:03:20.448
The consequences were severe. The earth opened up and swallowed Korah,
00:03:20.628 --> 00:03:24.048
his followers, and their families.
00:03:24.888 --> 00:03:30.828
And so this is an interesting story. Korah thought Moses was thinking of himself too highly.
00:03:31.068 --> 00:03:34.888
He did not want, he thought that maybe he should be the ruler.
00:03:35.128 --> 00:03:42.768
But we find out here that God said, no, no, no, you are stepping out of line.
00:03:42.988 --> 00:03:45.048
And God judged them all.
00:03:45.448 --> 00:03:49.948
And so, like I said, sometimes you have to be careful who you're listening to,
00:03:50.128 --> 00:03:55.788
who you're hanging with. because when you read the story, you find out that
00:03:55.788 --> 00:03:58.128
there was time for them to repent.
00:03:58.668 --> 00:04:03.628
God gave them another day to get their stuff together. That's how patient God is.
00:04:03.868 --> 00:04:11.208
He told Moses, he said, Moses told Korah, you know what, come back tomorrow and bring the incense.
00:04:11.508 --> 00:04:17.368
If God really honors your word and if I was wrong, then he's going to light
00:04:17.368 --> 00:04:22.768
that incense. And lo and behold, nothing got lit, and it was a terrible story.
00:04:23.048 --> 00:04:28.008
But a lot of times our rebellion doesn't just affect just us.
00:04:28.228 --> 00:04:30.128
It affects our families.
00:04:30.388 --> 00:04:38.488
So we see here in this quick summary that the followers and their families were killed.
00:04:38.688 --> 00:04:41.928
The earth opened up, swaddled them.
00:04:42.888 --> 00:04:49.068
So they were pretty much buried alive because of their rebellion.
00:04:49.428 --> 00:04:52.568
Let's go to Numbers 16, verse 11.
00:04:52.788 --> 00:04:59.768
It says, It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together.
00:05:00.588 --> 00:05:03.908
Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?
00:05:04.528 --> 00:05:12.588
Rebellion isn't just defiance against human authority. is defiance against God-established authority.
00:05:12.888 --> 00:05:19.688
When we reject God's order, we invite chaos into our lives and relationships.
00:05:19.688 --> 00:05:25.188
You always have to be careful who you're talking about and who you're gathering
00:05:25.188 --> 00:05:26.848
around as your audience.
00:05:27.168 --> 00:05:30.688
You can ask the Holy Ghost, Holy Ghost, God, my lips.
00:05:31.568 --> 00:05:36.928
And even if you don't, you can feel that feeling in your belly,
00:05:36.928 --> 00:05:43.448
your gut that you are coughing up or you're getting ready to go down some unholy
00:05:43.448 --> 00:05:46.248
trails, so you might want to just check yourself.
00:05:47.202 --> 00:05:52.062
Reflection question, where in your life are you resisting God's authority or
00:05:52.062 --> 00:05:54.302
the leaders he's placed over you?
00:05:55.002 --> 00:06:00.862
Before I came on to do the recording, I was just asking myself the same question
00:06:00.862 --> 00:06:05.282
because a lot of times you have your way, you want to do things,
00:06:05.402 --> 00:06:07.942
and then the leader has his way of doing things.
00:06:08.062 --> 00:06:12.842
So you quietly rebel by not showing up at the meetings because,
00:06:12.842 --> 00:06:15.682
you know, I don't want to show up at the meeting. You're not even doing it my way.
00:06:16.282 --> 00:06:20.002
Is that kind of a rebellion that you're doing?
00:06:20.382 --> 00:06:24.582
Are you resisting God's authority because they're not following your way?
00:06:25.162 --> 00:06:29.242
Something to ask yourself. So we have to always check ourselves on our rebellion.
00:06:29.602 --> 00:06:33.462
And it's like a little kid.
00:06:33.582 --> 00:06:37.802
When you're two years old, when they're two years old, they rebel out loud.
00:06:38.042 --> 00:06:40.482
But as adults, we rebel quietly.
00:06:40.922 --> 00:06:46.542
Some of us do. We just don't do things. We don't do it the way we used to. We just stop.
00:06:47.002 --> 00:06:50.242
You stop going to church. You stop attending meetings.
00:06:50.622 --> 00:06:55.522
You stop speaking up. You just totally just stop. You just disappear into the woodwork.
00:06:55.882 --> 00:07:01.302
It's a quiet rebellion. Everybody's asking, where's Connie? Where she ain't been around?
00:07:02.002 --> 00:07:07.842
Connie's over here rebelling quietly. Not fussing, just quietly rebelling.
00:07:08.582 --> 00:07:13.502
Rebelling, right? And so that's not what you want to do. You want to invite
00:07:13.502 --> 00:07:16.502
God into your life, not chaos, right?
00:07:16.682 --> 00:07:18.822
And so what is the root of rebellion?
00:07:19.122 --> 00:07:23.562
Rebellion often starts with pride, jealousy, or dissatisfaction.
00:07:24.282 --> 00:07:31.222
Korah and his followers felt entitled to positions of power that God hasn't assigned to them.
00:07:31.907 --> 00:07:38.827
James 3.16 reads, for where you have envy and selfish ambition,
00:07:40.127 --> 00:07:45.327
there you will find disorder and evil practices.
00:07:45.727 --> 00:07:53.787
So whenever there's envy and selfishness happening, you will find disorder in every evil practice.
00:07:53.787 --> 00:08:01.747
So take a look around in your job or your workplace, your church,
00:08:02.107 --> 00:08:03.447
your groups that you're in.
00:08:03.627 --> 00:08:09.387
Whenever there's this fight for the top, whenever there's envy and selfishness
00:08:09.387 --> 00:08:15.727
happening, there's always this thread of disorder and evil practice.
00:08:16.407 --> 00:08:21.107
Rebellion isn't just about outward actions. I just mentioned this.
00:08:21.107 --> 00:08:24.187
It's about the condition of our hearts.
00:08:25.147 --> 00:08:30.867
It reveals a lack of trust in God's plan and a desire to take control on our
00:08:30.867 --> 00:08:33.687
own terms. Isn't that interesting?
00:08:34.507 --> 00:08:39.087
That we're not going to make a big deal about it, but we are making a big deal
00:08:39.087 --> 00:08:40.807
about it secretly in our hearts.
00:08:40.987 --> 00:08:46.307
Our heart has sat down and we decided that we're going to rebel quietly.
00:08:46.307 --> 00:08:53.087
And secretly all attention does go to you because you decided not to attend
00:08:53.087 --> 00:08:57.127
a meeting and maybe they wanted to award you with something,
00:08:57.287 --> 00:09:00.987
but you won't be there because you're secretly rebelling, right?
00:09:01.167 --> 00:09:06.327
And so you're just, I'm not going because it's not happening the way I want it to happen.
00:09:06.907 --> 00:09:08.947
I'm preaching to myself here. Hello.
00:09:09.687 --> 00:09:14.547
All right. And so what are the dangers of rebellion? Rebellion has far-reaching
00:09:14.547 --> 00:09:19.267
consequences. So let's break it down. Number one, it disrupts the community.
00:09:19.967 --> 00:09:23.327
Coral rebellion caused division among the Israelites.
00:09:24.067 --> 00:09:29.847
Rebellion doesn't just affect us. It creates chaos in families,
00:09:30.107 --> 00:09:31.767
churches, and communities.
00:09:32.067 --> 00:09:37.207
So you always find that one person, maybe there's two, sometimes there's two,
00:09:37.827 --> 00:09:45.367
that are always complaining, saying sidestep underneath their breath, and just something.
00:09:45.647 --> 00:09:50.467
And so if you gather with them, you can kind of moan and complain with them.
00:09:50.747 --> 00:09:53.447
Or you can say, what did you say? Why are you saying that?
00:09:53.987 --> 00:09:56.687
You know, I mean, you don't have to even be here with that attitude.
00:09:57.027 --> 00:10:00.767
You can be kind of that bold person because it's disrupting.
00:10:00.987 --> 00:10:04.727
You're sitting there in church, and you got this person. I don't even like the
00:10:04.727 --> 00:10:08.747
way they saw it. And you brought that into the church, right?
00:10:08.747 --> 00:10:11.567
You brought that into the meeting. You brought that into the workplace.
00:10:11.787 --> 00:10:17.167
So it disrupt the unity that was already happening because you're sitting there
00:10:17.167 --> 00:10:23.087
with your little attitude coming in there to disrupt this peace.
00:10:23.447 --> 00:10:25.447
Number two, it leads to judgment.
00:10:26.347 --> 00:10:30.487
God's response to choral rebellion was swift and severe.
00:10:31.332 --> 00:10:36.292
While we live under the grace through Christ, rebellion still carries spiritual
00:10:36.292 --> 00:10:38.512
and practical consequences.
00:10:38.512 --> 00:10:43.972
We talked about that in another episode, that even though you may repent for
00:10:43.972 --> 00:10:48.292
your sins, there are still some consequences for your rebellion.
00:10:48.512 --> 00:10:55.732
But you see, God gave Korah and his crew extra time to get it right, but they didn't.
00:10:55.792 --> 00:11:00.972
And it cost their lives and the lives of their family. And if you read the story,
00:11:01.392 --> 00:11:04.892
some of the Israelites were like that, so it was hard.
00:11:05.052 --> 00:11:11.392
And some of them, who even though they weren't in the crew, they secretly sided
00:11:11.392 --> 00:11:14.272
with the crew, and they died also.
00:11:14.692 --> 00:11:18.892
And so there was a plague among them. So you really have to be careful,
00:11:18.892 --> 00:11:23.612
because a lot of times we kind of vicariously kind of rebel,
00:11:23.612 --> 00:11:25.532
because we're not in the crew,
00:11:25.752 --> 00:11:29.792
but we were bearing with them, secretly watching, seeing where they get away with it.
00:11:29.892 --> 00:11:32.732
And then all of a sudden we shift over there.
00:11:32.852 --> 00:11:37.432
Our hearts are already there and it takes just one little shift and they might
00:11:37.432 --> 00:11:40.632
leave the church and boom, you're right there with them, agreeing with them.
00:11:41.452 --> 00:11:46.472
Number three, it blocks blessings. When we rebel, we distance ourselves from
00:11:46.472 --> 00:11:48.692
God's provision and protection.
00:11:49.372 --> 00:11:54.512
Submission in his order positions us to receive his blessings.
00:11:54.912 --> 00:11:58.252
So how do we, what are the dangers of rebellion?
00:11:58.572 --> 00:12:04.832
It disrupts the community. It leads to judgment and it blocks blessings.
00:12:05.192 --> 00:12:11.072
So when we rebel, when it blocks blessings, we're no longer protected by God
00:12:11.072 --> 00:12:16.212
and we're no longer allowing God's provision to assist us.
00:12:16.252 --> 00:12:20.172
So we have to just be very careful with that. James 4, 7 reads.
00:12:25.712 --> 00:12:31.052
So submission happens first pretty much in our hearts. And as we submit to God,
00:12:31.728 --> 00:12:39.048
then we have that power to resist the devil. And then and only then does the devil flee from you.
00:12:39.788 --> 00:12:44.668
Submission to God's authority protects us from the enemy's schemes.
00:12:44.968 --> 00:12:48.228
So how do you overcome the spirit of rebellion?
00:12:48.768 --> 00:12:53.568
How do we stop playing this dangerous game of rebellion?
00:12:54.068 --> 00:13:00.788
There's three practical steps. Number one, recognizing God's sovereignty.
00:13:01.468 --> 00:13:05.268
Trust that God knows best, even when you don't understand his plans.
00:13:06.008 --> 00:13:10.168
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,
00:13:10.288 --> 00:13:13.848
declares the Lord. Lord, that's in Isaiah 55, 8.
00:13:14.588 --> 00:13:19.808
Number two, pray for a submissive heart. Ask God to soften your heart and align
00:13:19.808 --> 00:13:22.008
your desires with his will.
00:13:22.488 --> 00:13:27.408
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
00:13:27.968 --> 00:13:32.528
So when you have a hard heart, you got, Lord, help me unsoften my heart.
00:13:32.728 --> 00:13:36.908
Help my heart be submissive. And that can be just from some damage that's done
00:13:36.908 --> 00:13:38.128
from other things, right?
00:13:38.388 --> 00:13:43.608
I don't want to kind of hold on to this stubbornness, this rebellion,
00:13:43.608 --> 00:13:48.228
because it feels good for one, but it doesn't look good to God.
00:13:49.147 --> 00:13:53.687
And so number three, honor God's established authority.
00:13:54.127 --> 00:13:59.007
Remember, they were put in that place for a reason, whether you like them or not.
00:13:59.147 --> 00:14:03.447
We have all kinds of excuses why I don't want to go because I don't like him or her.
00:14:03.807 --> 00:14:09.867
We all said that. But we got to realize that God has put these people in these positions.
00:14:10.547 --> 00:14:16.367
Whether it's in your family, your workplace, or church, honor the leaders God has placed over you.
00:14:16.827 --> 00:14:21.867
Submission isn't about weakness. It's about trusting God's wisdom.
00:14:22.927 --> 00:14:29.007
So how do we stop playing the game of rebellion? We recognize God's sovereignty that he knows best.
00:14:29.387 --> 00:14:32.727
We ask God to soften our heart.
00:14:33.247 --> 00:14:38.947
Create in me a pure heart, oh God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me was
00:14:38.947 --> 00:14:40.247
a prayer that David prayed.
00:14:40.447 --> 00:14:45.787
So ask God to help you with your heart. And a lot of times he'll let you know.
00:14:46.247 --> 00:14:49.727
Or I need help with this one. Just ask, I need help with this.
00:14:50.027 --> 00:14:53.507
This is not going to be an easy one. I need some help with this.
00:14:54.007 --> 00:14:58.487
That's Psalms 51.10. And number three, honor God's established order.
00:14:59.567 --> 00:15:06.207
Whoever God puts above you, that's the order he wants you to humble yourself to.
00:15:06.567 --> 00:15:10.527
He didn't put you in that position, so that means you're not the one in charge.
00:15:11.107 --> 00:15:15.327
All right, let's do some decrees to break free from rebellion.
00:15:15.327 --> 00:15:19.047
So let's declare some truth together to break free from rebellion.
00:15:19.947 --> 00:15:25.287
I decree that I will submit to God's authority and trust his plans for my life.
00:15:25.547 --> 00:15:29.547
I decree that I will honor the leaders God has placed over me.
00:15:29.847 --> 00:15:34.707
I decree that my heart is free from pride, envy, and selfish abvention.
00:15:36.087 --> 00:15:40.267
I don't know if I can't say that word. So what are we going to learn this week?
00:15:40.687 --> 00:15:46.627
Or just to stay. I encourage you to reflect on areas where you might be resisting God's authority.
00:15:47.437 --> 00:15:51.017
Ask yourself, am I trusting God's timing and leadership in my life?
00:15:51.477 --> 00:15:56.877
How can I better honor the people God has placed in position of authority?
00:15:58.017 --> 00:16:01.177
Practical challenge that you can do to test that.
00:16:01.677 --> 00:16:06.097
Identify one area where you have been resistant to submission,
00:16:07.077 --> 00:16:10.437
whether it's in a relationship, a task, or a calling.
00:16:11.537 --> 00:16:19.177
And commit to surrendering it to God this week. Wow, what is that thing that you've been resisting?
00:16:19.517 --> 00:16:21.337
God said, submit to it that week.
00:16:21.857 --> 00:16:24.697
You don't have to do it alone. He said, you can ask for help.
00:16:24.977 --> 00:16:29.337
Lord, help me to resist to that thing that I have been resisting.
00:16:30.377 --> 00:16:36.437
That's keeping my provisions and my protection from you.
00:16:37.277 --> 00:16:42.437
Holding you hostage until I get my act together, to get my humility together.
00:16:43.817 --> 00:16:48.817
So let's just pray. Heavenly Father, I just thank you for your divine order and wisdom.
00:16:49.277 --> 00:16:55.417
Forgive us for the times we have resisted your authority or the leaders you've placed over us.
00:16:55.697 --> 00:16:58.757
Teach us to trust you fully and
00:16:58.757 --> 00:17:03.197
to walk in submission, knowing that your plans are always for our good.
00:17:03.437 --> 00:17:10.237
Remove pride, envy, and rebellion from our hearts. And fill us with peace and humility.
00:17:10.657 --> 00:17:12.797
In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
00:17:13.497 --> 00:17:18.517
I want to thank you all for joining me on this episode of The Games We Play With God.
00:17:18.877 --> 00:17:23.617

00:17:24.077 --> 00:17:32.417

00:17:33.397 --> 00:17:39.457
So until next time, stay humble, stay submitted, and be blessed.
