00:00:01.017 --> 00:00:07.277
Welcome back to Diary of a Black Woman podcast, and I'm your host,

00:00:07.737 --> 00:00:12.537
Connie Morris, and today we're diving into another powerful topic in our series,

00:00:12.737 --> 00:00:14.917
the games we play with God.

00:00:15.197 --> 00:00:18.717
This episode is titled, Trusting in Worldly Strength.

00:00:19.597 --> 00:00:25.637
It's so easy to rely on our abilities, resources, or connections when challenges

00:00:25.637 --> 00:00:32.557
arise, but But trusting in worldly strength instead of God's power often leads to disappointment,

00:00:32.917 --> 00:00:37.757
frustration, and missed opportunities and missed blessings.

00:00:40.457 --> 00:00:46.317
Today we're going to look at the story of King Saul, who repeatedly trusted

00:00:46.317 --> 00:00:51.857
in his own understanding and worldly strategies instead of God's commands.

00:00:51.857 --> 00:00:56.757
If you've ever been tempted to take matters into your own hands,

00:00:57.077 --> 00:01:02.217
this episode will speak directly to you.

00:01:02.637 --> 00:01:10.577
So let's talk about this one. Our story today starts from 1 Samuel 15, verses 1 through 23.

00:01:11.497 --> 00:01:16.137
And for the sake of time, I won't read all the scriptures, so I'll give you a summation.

00:01:16.137 --> 00:01:22.057
You know, so Saul was given a clear command from God through the prophet Samuel

00:01:22.057 --> 00:01:27.677
was to eradicate the Amalekites, leaving nothing behind.

00:01:27.977 --> 00:01:34.537
But Saul disobeyed, sparing the king and keeping the best of the livestock.

00:01:35.037 --> 00:01:40.237
And so let's see in 1 Samuel 15, 19, it reads, but Samuel said,

00:01:40.417 --> 00:01:49.437
why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the sight of the Lord?

00:01:49.937 --> 00:01:58.197
So here, Saul was given a clear command from God through Samuel to kill everybody,

00:01:58.457 --> 00:01:59.837
including the livestock.

00:02:00.317 --> 00:02:07.297
But Saul, the king, took it upon his own to decide to spare the best of the

00:02:07.297 --> 00:02:09.597
livestock and to keep the king.

00:02:10.297 --> 00:02:12.357
So Saul's justification of his

00:02:12.357 --> 00:02:17.977
actions by saying he intended to use the livestock as a sacrifice to God.

00:02:18.217 --> 00:02:21.917
But Samuel responded with a powerful truth.

00:02:22.177 --> 00:02:26.457
So many times this is another form of disobedience, right?

00:02:27.117 --> 00:02:31.377
God gives you a command and you find 101 reasons.

00:02:32.237 --> 00:02:36.497
They probably are the best reasons that you could think of why you didn't follow

00:02:36.497 --> 00:02:40.797
through on what he asked you to do. but this is what.

00:02:41.872 --> 00:02:51.332
Was said by Samuel, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

00:02:51.712 --> 00:02:57.792
So Saul thought it was cool just to say, I was going to sacrifice this to the Lord.

00:02:58.012 --> 00:03:02.792
Ooh, how many times you heard that one? I was going to sacrifice this to the Lord.

00:03:03.032 --> 00:03:07.792
I'm playing the lottery because I'm going to give some of this money to the

00:03:07.792 --> 00:03:12.072
church, And then when they win, you can't even find them. I don't think they even found the church.

00:03:12.452 --> 00:03:14.772
You know, so, yeah.

00:03:15.932 --> 00:03:22.452
So Saul's decision to rely on worldly wisdom, which is easy to find,

00:03:22.932 --> 00:03:29.812
that seems logical at the moment, led to his rejection as king.

00:03:30.292 --> 00:03:37.052
So he was king. He was asked by God through the prophet to do one thing.

00:03:37.052 --> 00:03:39.852
So can you just do that one thing?

00:03:40.272 --> 00:03:44.932
And God knows the heart of man, so he knew Saul wasn't going to obey.

00:03:45.152 --> 00:03:46.752
But can you do that one thing?

00:03:47.332 --> 00:03:51.572
And Saul could not do that one thing.

00:03:51.712 --> 00:03:57.672
And then he used worldly wisdom and gave himself a quote to say,

00:03:57.852 --> 00:03:59.572
so Saul decided not to do it.

00:03:59.672 --> 00:04:04.872
So he trusted in worldly wisdom and often led to disobedience and spiritual

00:04:04.872 --> 00:04:10.632
consequences. Remember, when we disobey God, there are consequences.

00:04:11.232 --> 00:04:15.632
Sometimes we think there's not, but there are consequences.

00:04:16.052 --> 00:04:17.892
So are there areas in your life

00:04:17.892 --> 00:04:24.052
where you are relying on your own strength instead of trusting in God?

00:04:29.557 --> 00:04:35.097
Lionel, I'll just say it's trusting in God. Why do we trust in worldly strength?

00:04:35.337 --> 00:04:37.417
For many of us, it's about control.

00:04:37.677 --> 00:04:42.957
We feel safer when we can see, touch, or manipulate the outcome.

00:04:43.197 --> 00:04:48.737
But the mindset often reveals a lack of trust in God's sovereignty.

00:04:49.657 --> 00:04:53.757
Wow. So why do we trust in the worldly strength?

00:04:54.357 --> 00:05:00.437
Because we can see it, we can feel it, and we can probably try to manipulate the outcome.

00:05:01.477 --> 00:05:05.277
And Psalms 20 verse 7 says it best.

00:05:05.457 --> 00:05:13.637
It says, some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

00:05:14.177 --> 00:05:21.057
Worldly strength might look impressive, but it's not compared to the power of God.

00:05:21.437 --> 00:05:24.737
So let's go back to Saul.

00:05:25.157 --> 00:05:29.337
Saul had one thing to do. So I decided to use his own wisdom.

00:05:29.657 --> 00:05:34.317
His wisdom was like, you know, why kill everybody? Why even kill the king?

00:05:34.817 --> 00:05:37.137
Let's keep the best. Let's keep the king.

00:05:37.737 --> 00:05:42.277
And we're going to save this good lifestyle. We're going to sacrifice it to

00:05:42.277 --> 00:05:45.857
the Lord. So we make it sound really holy, like it's really powerful.

00:05:45.957 --> 00:05:48.937
But did God ask you to do that thing?

00:05:49.417 --> 00:05:53.657
And so we have to wonder, like, is it our idea or is it God's idea?

00:05:53.857 --> 00:05:56.177
What did he tell you to do?

00:05:57.197 --> 00:06:03.217
What did he tell you to do? So worldly strength might look impressive,

00:06:03.217 --> 00:06:07.137
but it's not compared to the power of God.

00:06:07.517 --> 00:06:12.317
So let's see how we can fix this up, right? So what are the consequences?

00:06:12.537 --> 00:06:16.997
We're always talking about the consequences of trusting in worldly strength.

00:06:17.317 --> 00:06:22.217
So our reliance on its own wisdom have far-reaching consequences.

00:06:22.217 --> 00:06:26.057
You know, yeah, it sounds like really good at the time.

00:06:26.277 --> 00:06:31.537
Your worldly wisdom sounds good at the time. But what are the consequences when

00:06:31.537 --> 00:06:34.977
you use worldly wisdom over God's wisdom?

00:06:35.437 --> 00:06:38.437
Number one, loss of God's favor.

00:06:39.217 --> 00:06:45.557
Saul's disobedience caused God to reject him as king, a position that was meant

00:06:45.557 --> 00:06:51.057
to be blessed and sustained by divine favor. How powerful is that?

00:06:52.217 --> 00:06:57.537
Number two, spiritual blindness. When we trust in worldly strength,

00:06:57.817 --> 00:07:02.817
we often fail to see how God is working in the situation.

00:07:04.177 --> 00:07:09.717
And number three, miss blessings. Saul actions forfeited the opportunity for

00:07:09.717 --> 00:07:15.477
his lineage to continue on the throne, a blessing that could have been his.

00:07:15.697 --> 00:07:17.537
I just want to slow this down a bit.

00:07:18.277 --> 00:07:20.757
Saul had the full instruction. Sure.

00:07:23.048 --> 00:07:30.688
Now, we talk about delayed disobedience is disobedience. What about partial obedience?

00:07:31.368 --> 00:07:38.728
Partial obedience is still disobedience. And so we see here that when Saul had

00:07:38.728 --> 00:07:43.248
partial disobedience, it's just like he didn't obey the rule.

00:07:44.008 --> 00:07:50.368
Kill everybody, kill everything, and he kills only what he thought was appropriate.

00:07:51.068 --> 00:07:56.768
So he lost favor with God. And so he was rejected from God. We don't want that, do we?

00:07:57.408 --> 00:08:01.408
Spiritual blindness. And so when we have spiritual blindness,

00:08:01.428 --> 00:08:07.508
we trust in worldly strength, worldly power, even worldly leaders.

00:08:07.628 --> 00:08:10.588
And we often fail to see God working.

00:08:10.848 --> 00:08:13.688
What was God's plan behind the scene?

00:08:14.068 --> 00:08:16.828
We won't know if we're thinking about our way.

00:08:17.948 --> 00:08:23.608
And then Miss Blessing. Saul missed opportunity for his lineage to continue

00:08:23.608 --> 00:08:26.168
on the throne, so he missed a blessing.

00:08:26.508 --> 00:08:31.528
Jeremiah 17, 5 says the best. It says, Cursed is the one who trusts in man,

00:08:31.568 --> 00:08:38.028
who draws strength from mere flesh, whose heart turns away from God.

00:08:38.428 --> 00:08:44.308
Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh,

00:08:44.508 --> 00:08:46.868
whose hearts turn away from God.

00:08:46.868 --> 00:08:53.968
So trust is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh,

00:08:54.168 --> 00:08:56.248
whose hearts turn away from God.

00:08:56.788 --> 00:08:59.888
Trusting in man and trusting in your own flesh.

00:09:00.048 --> 00:09:05.668
When we place our trust in the world instead of God, we cut ourselves off from

00:09:05.668 --> 00:09:09.448
the blessings he wants to pour into our lives.

00:09:09.928 --> 00:09:16.748
So how do we turn this around? How do we break this habit of trusting in worldly strength?

00:09:17.548 --> 00:09:22.148
God keeps calling it a habit, right? He calls it the games we play,

00:09:22.308 --> 00:09:24.168
but then he calls it a habit.

00:09:24.668 --> 00:09:28.788
How do we break this habit? Number one, we acknowledge our limitation.

00:09:29.448 --> 00:09:35.028
Recognize that your strength is limited, but God's power is limitless.

00:09:35.748 --> 00:09:41.208
Recognize that your strength is limited, but God's power is limitless.

00:09:41.328 --> 00:09:46.708
So when we trust in the world's power, we limit ourselves to what the world knows.

00:09:46.868 --> 00:09:53.508
And according to 1 Corinthians 12, God says, my grace is sufficient for you,

00:09:53.588 --> 00:09:56.308
for my power is made perfect in your weakness.

00:09:56.488 --> 00:10:01.268
So you limit yourself when you trust in the world's way.

00:10:02.148 --> 00:10:07.688
But God's power is limitless. Number two, seek God's guidance first.

00:10:07.868 --> 00:10:12.608
Before making decisions, pray and seek God's wisdom through his word.

00:10:13.028 --> 00:10:19.428
Proverbs 3, 6 reads, In all your ways, submit to him, and he will make your path straight.

00:10:20.367 --> 00:10:26.287
So seek his guidance first. And finally, number three, celebrate God's faithfulness.

00:10:27.307 --> 00:10:32.467
Look back on times when God came through for you, even when you couldn't see a way forward.

00:10:32.907 --> 00:10:38.127
The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusts in him and he helps me.

00:10:38.567 --> 00:10:45.347
Psalms 28.7. So how do you break free from the habit of trusting in worldly wisdom?

00:10:46.067 --> 00:10:47.907
Acknowledge your limitations.

00:10:48.667 --> 00:10:53.207
Seek God's guidance first and celebrate God's faithfulness.

00:10:53.687 --> 00:10:59.587
And so, for instance, for Saul and then for us too, God asks you to do a hard thing.

00:11:00.187 --> 00:11:04.147
Lord, do this? All this? You sure?

00:11:05.347 --> 00:11:08.467
We're not negotiating with him. We're like, just confirming.

00:11:09.047 --> 00:11:13.907
You go do it, right? So he's going to say yes, yes, and yes.

00:11:14.307 --> 00:11:18.807
You go do it. And so you acknowledge, this is a lot.

00:11:19.367 --> 00:11:22.927
I just want to make sure that you want, I want to make sure I get this right.

00:11:22.987 --> 00:11:25.447
You want me to kill everybody here. Okay, got it.

00:11:26.067 --> 00:11:30.307
All right. And last time I did this, then you gave me this. I'm looking forward

00:11:30.307 --> 00:11:33.347
to see what you have for me when I do this, right?

00:11:33.587 --> 00:11:39.727
And so I'm being able to know that through the prophet, Saul was supposed to do one thing.

00:11:40.067 --> 00:11:44.127
But in his own worldly wisdom, he did his own thing.

00:11:44.943 --> 00:11:51.023
So we have to be careful of that, that we don't do our own thing because we

00:11:51.023 --> 00:11:52.523
want to, like, I don't know.

00:11:52.643 --> 00:11:55.643
Are we trying to impress God? Are we just trying to be God?

00:11:56.703 --> 00:12:00.523
Or we want to kind of control the outcome? I don't know.

00:12:01.203 --> 00:12:07.283
But long story short, the guy who he kept showed up again, part of that family

00:12:07.283 --> 00:12:11.963
generation, showed up again in the book of,

00:12:12.803 --> 00:12:16.803
man, I can't think of it right now. the book of Esther.

00:12:17.423 --> 00:12:21.403
Yeah, the book of Esther. And so we don't, God knows the future,

00:12:21.403 --> 00:12:23.163
so we don't take care of things.

00:12:25.023 --> 00:12:31.163
He's trying to get rid of the root of the problem, and we just don't understand his whole story.

00:12:31.443 --> 00:12:35.083
Maybe because he's not telling us, or we don't ask, or we just want to do our

00:12:35.083 --> 00:12:39.523
own thing, that we keep kind of some junk keep going, growing,

00:12:39.663 --> 00:12:40.423
and growing, and growing.

00:12:41.263 --> 00:12:44.943
You way in our families, too. You know, I won't go into all that,

00:12:45.023 --> 00:12:48.403
but God might be telling you to do something even in your families,

00:12:48.403 --> 00:12:53.923
but you only do it halfway, and yet that root grows up out of a grandchild,

00:12:53.923 --> 00:12:56.443
and then you don't do what he tells you to do,

00:12:56.543 --> 00:12:59.223
and you keep seeing that same root grow up.

00:12:59.443 --> 00:13:01.603
So just acknowledge your limitations.

00:13:01.903 --> 00:13:05.323
Seek God's guidance. He's trying to clean up your family, too.

00:13:05.903 --> 00:13:09.503
You know, he's trying to clean up you and everything. Just be obedient.

00:13:10.103 --> 00:13:14.703
Be obedient. So how do we just trust in his strength? Let's declare these.

00:13:14.863 --> 00:13:20.463
I decree that I will trust in the name of the Lord, not in worldly strength or wisdom.

00:13:21.383 --> 00:13:25.923
I want to just confirm that you heard me. I decree that I will trust in the

00:13:25.923 --> 00:13:30.183
name of the Lord, not in worldly strength or worldly wisdom.

00:13:30.603 --> 00:13:36.243
I decree that I will seek God's guidance in every decision, knowing his plans are perfect.

00:13:36.583 --> 00:13:42.823
I decree that God's strength in my source of power and his wisdom is my guide.

00:13:43.043 --> 00:13:46.723
So we're just trusting in God. We're trusting in his wisdom.

00:13:46.903 --> 00:13:50.343
We're trusting in his guidance. We're trusting in his plans.

00:13:50.523 --> 00:13:55.143
We're trusting in his power, and we're just trusting him wholeheartedly.

00:13:55.423 --> 00:14:00.443
So how can we kind of develop this strength and trust in God.

00:14:00.683 --> 00:14:07.123
So I want you to, this week or today or tomorrow, rely, how to,

00:14:07.383 --> 00:14:12.183
this week, reflect on where you've been relying on worldly strength instead of trusting God.

00:14:12.443 --> 00:14:16.023
That's easy to do, right? So you can take a paper, draw a line.

00:14:16.223 --> 00:14:19.003
You can put trust in God, trust in wisdom.

00:14:19.363 --> 00:14:21.843
And you can just put, make a list.

00:14:22.403 --> 00:14:28.703
And then see where you need to continue your decree and to build up your faith.

00:14:29.243 --> 00:14:33.823
What steps can you take to release control and let God guide you?

00:14:33.963 --> 00:14:35.743
Those are some questions you can ask yourself.

00:14:35.983 --> 00:14:40.883
What steps can I take to release control and let God guide me?

00:14:41.784 --> 00:14:46.544
And then how can I lean into God's promises and rely on his power?

00:14:47.144 --> 00:14:54.104
How can I lean on his promises, into his promise, rely on his power?

00:14:55.224 --> 00:15:00.544
Another one you can ask, how can I acknowledge my limitations in these decisions?

00:15:00.904 --> 00:15:03.944
How can I accept God's guidance first?

00:15:04.224 --> 00:15:09.044
And how can I celebrate God's faithfulness? I remember I had a job and I was

00:15:09.044 --> 00:15:14.564
working as a CPS worker. And those cases can get really hard sometimes.

00:15:15.464 --> 00:15:21.224
And I remember trying to make these decisions, you know, what to do with what.

00:15:21.304 --> 00:15:25.944
You have supervisors, but, you know, you want to try to make the right decision at the right time.

00:15:26.224 --> 00:15:31.444
And so, and the Lord was saying, like, bring each one of these cases to me so

00:15:31.444 --> 00:15:34.424
that I can help you make the decision, you know.

00:15:34.624 --> 00:15:38.804
And I would just, it'd be a chance where I would just list the names and I'll

00:15:38.804 --> 00:15:40.244
go before the Lord and I'll say,

00:15:40.244 --> 00:15:43.044
Lord, what about this one? And then he'll give me a little background.

00:15:43.304 --> 00:15:48.104
I'll make a decision. Then I'll give another case. And it was just like he was

00:15:48.104 --> 00:15:52.884
kind of the supervisor of the cases.

00:15:52.884 --> 00:15:58.084
I didn't have to carry that burden on trying to determine what's the best outcome

00:15:58.084 --> 00:16:00.404
because that's that worldly wisdom, right?

00:16:00.444 --> 00:16:02.844
We don't know the end of the story, but God does.

00:16:03.124 --> 00:16:08.124
And each one of those cases turned out the way he wanted them to,

00:16:08.264 --> 00:16:09.444
or how they were going to be.

00:16:09.624 --> 00:16:12.124
Let this person do, she's going to do this.

00:16:12.384 --> 00:16:14.924
He just had the whole story. And I love that.

00:16:15.304 --> 00:16:20.344
And even in a recent job I had the same thing. I just took those cases to them.

00:16:20.484 --> 00:16:25.684
So those examples are like, instead of you using your worldly wisdom at your

00:16:25.684 --> 00:16:31.844
job, take your issue, your problem, your circumstances, is take them to God

00:16:31.844 --> 00:16:34.944
and ask him, how should I handle this problem?

00:16:35.344 --> 00:16:38.104
How do you want me to handle this situation?

00:16:40.104 --> 00:16:44.124
And before I resigned from this other job that had a lot of pressure,

00:16:44.564 --> 00:16:47.104
I think a lot of control, a lot of manipulation.

00:16:47.824 --> 00:16:52.324
I saw it on the 30th day, and I continue to see it on the 60th day.

00:16:52.704 --> 00:16:56.184
And I was like, Lord, what is going on? I loved it the 30th day.

00:16:56.284 --> 00:17:01.904
I said, okay, I can handle some of this. It really got really pressing on the 60th day.

00:17:02.804 --> 00:17:07.384
And I said, okay, I don't think this is the job for me because of the things

00:17:07.384 --> 00:17:10.044
that God was showing me, like exposing to me.

00:17:10.184 --> 00:17:14.664
Because when you take things to the Lord, your worldly wisdom will think,

00:17:14.804 --> 00:17:16.664
okay, this too should pass.

00:17:16.844 --> 00:17:20.024
And you're not, if nothing's happening, you're just like, okay,

00:17:20.104 --> 00:17:21.984
this ain't working for me, but you don't know why.

00:17:22.164 --> 00:17:24.724
But if you take it to God, he will

00:17:24.724 --> 00:17:29.164
say, this is what's going on behind the scenes. and then he can help you.

00:17:29.910 --> 00:17:41.290
And so we talked about Saul, and we see that Saul had a word from the Lord, but he disobeyed it.

00:17:41.510 --> 00:17:46.610
And so we may have a word from the Lord about working at this particular job,

00:17:46.770 --> 00:17:50.630
but yet things are happening kind of crazy, getting chaotic.

00:17:51.030 --> 00:17:54.450
Go to the Lord. Don't use worldly wisdom.

00:17:54.970 --> 00:18:02.590
Go to the Lord and ask him, what do you, like Saul to Paul, what would you have me to do with this?

00:18:03.090 --> 00:18:06.790
And make it your day. Like you're going, a lot of times we have to meet with

00:18:06.790 --> 00:18:10.010
our supervisors. Go to the Lord first.

00:18:10.950 --> 00:18:13.870
And then when you meet with your supervisor, you already have a plan.

00:18:14.230 --> 00:18:17.250
They've like, kind of you, you have a great control of your cases.

00:18:17.550 --> 00:18:21.770
Why? Because I didn't get it from worldly wisdom. I got it from the Lord.

00:18:22.410 --> 00:18:27.330
Amen. So I want to let you go and close out in prayer. But just a little bit

00:18:27.330 --> 00:18:30.370
of wisdom here. Go to God with everything.

00:18:30.930 --> 00:18:34.850
Go to him for everything, with everything.

00:18:35.530 --> 00:18:40.630
Heavenly Father, I thank you for being our strength and our shield.

00:18:41.090 --> 00:18:46.730
Making that you are available to us to answer our questions,

00:18:46.730 --> 00:18:55.850
to manage our caseload, to give us your wisdom and your knowledge on stuff that

00:18:55.850 --> 00:18:57.550
we don't even know, Lord God.

00:18:58.050 --> 00:19:02.110
We ask for forgiveness for the times we trusted in worldly wisdom and our own

00:19:02.110 --> 00:19:04.570
ability instead of relying on you.

00:19:04.930 --> 00:19:09.910
Teach us to surrender control and lean wholly on your power and promises.

00:19:10.370 --> 00:19:16.430
Strengthen our faith and guide us every step we take. In Jesus' name, amen.

00:19:17.190 --> 00:19:25.530
Well, I thank you also for this opportunity just to be able to flow with you.

00:19:25.710 --> 00:19:27.730
It's just been fun. It's just been fun.

00:19:28.430 --> 00:19:34.450
All right. So thank you for joining me for this episode on the games we play with God.

00:19:35.270 --> 00:19:39.830
