Bible History Unmasked: Part 3: Bathsheba: From Roof to Royalty — The Political Matriarch
Host Connie Morris examines Bathsheba’s transformation in 1 Kings 1, showing how she moves from trauma to strategy as she protects Solomon’s inheritance. Teaming with the prophet Nathan, she enters the palace, reminds King David of his oath, and helps secure the throne through timely, courageous action.
This episode reframes Bathsheba as a political matriarch—mother, survivor, and political actor—and explores themes of palace power, survival, alliance, and legacy within the Black History Unmasked series.
Faith on the Go
The Word of God in your ear. Faith in your walk. Faith in your talk. And hope for the journey ahead.
Like Jabez, many of us have carried pain, labels, and stories that try to define who we are. But pain does not get the final word. Jabez prayed, and God answered. He asked God to bless him, enlarge his territory, keep His hand upon him, and protect him from evil.
And Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God still has good plans for our lives — plans of peace, hope, and a future.

00:00:10.602 --> 00:00:14.245
Welcome to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast. I'm your host,
00:00:14.245 --> 00:00:19.925
Connie Morris, and this is Faith on the Go, where you take the word with you
00:00:20.290 --> 00:00:23.738
on your drive to work, while you're getting ready in the morning,
00:00:24.426 --> 00:00:26.876
or even in those quiet moments before prayer.
00:00:27.549 --> 00:00:33.702
Real life, real word, and real growth, all while you are on the go.
00:00:34.161 --> 00:00:40.157
Before we get into today's word, let's take a moment to center ourselves with a familiar prayer.
00:00:40.703 --> 00:00:42.514
The prayer of Jabez.
00:00:43.118 --> 00:00:46.659
Oh, that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory.
00:00:47.181 --> 00:00:54.972
Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.
00:00:55.564 --> 00:01:00.719
Father God, we come before you this day asking that you would indeed bless us,
00:01:01.293 --> 00:01:04.805
not just with what we have, but in who we are becoming.
00:01:05.508 --> 00:01:10.265
Enlarge our territory, Lord. Expand our capacity, our mindset,
00:01:10.265 --> 00:01:12.948
and our ability to receive what you have for us.
00:01:13.564 --> 00:01:20.129
Let your hand be upon us, guiding us, covering us, and leading us in every decision we make.
00:01:20.831 --> 00:01:25.957
And Father, keep us from harm, physically, emotionally, and spiritually,
00:01:26.415 --> 00:01:29.422
that we may walk in peace and not in pain.
00:01:30.038 --> 00:01:35.413
And Lord, just as you heard Jabez when he cried out to you, Hear us now.
00:01:35.947 --> 00:01:42.849
Your word says that you granted his request, and we believe that you are the same God today.
00:01:43.239 --> 00:01:47.605
So we come boldly before you, knowing that you hear us, knowing that you see
00:01:47.605 --> 00:01:52.625
us, and knowing that you respond to the prayers of your people.
00:01:53.401 --> 00:01:58.789
Have your way in this moment as we sit, listen, and receive your word.
00:01:59.218 --> 00:02:01.459
In Jesus' name, amen.
00:02:13.151 --> 00:02:17.493
Hello, and welcome back to Diary of a Black Woman podcast. We're still continuing
00:02:17.743 --> 00:02:22.474
with our long-term study, our summer series of Black History Unmasked.
00:02:22.851 --> 00:02:28.442
But we're in part three of the story of Bathsheba. And today's title is Bathsheba,
00:02:28.807 --> 00:02:35.332
the Political Matriarch, Strategic Survival, Maternal Alliance, and Palace Power.
00:02:35.611 --> 00:02:38.618
And so I'm welcoming you all back to Bible History Unmasked.
00:02:38.920 --> 00:02:42.507
We learned in episode one, we met Bathsheba through the myth of the root,
00:02:43.356 --> 00:02:49.374
We slowed the scripture down and saw that she was not introduced as a temptress.
00:02:49.374 --> 00:02:53.864
She was a woman seen from a place of power, summoned by a king,
00:02:53.864 --> 00:02:57.508
and pulled into the consequences of David's decision.
00:02:57.822 --> 00:03:02.025
In episode two, we followed the casualties of the crown. Uriah was killed,
00:03:02.274 --> 00:03:06.001
and she would mourn the child's death, her husband's death.
00:03:06.158 --> 00:03:10.842
David's household was shaken, and we saw that when leaders abuse power,
00:03:11.067 --> 00:03:14.220
Innocent people often carry the consequences.
00:03:14.405 --> 00:03:17.499
But in episode three, it takes on a new chapter.
00:03:21.890 --> 00:03:24.967
Bathsheba is not only the woman that David summoned.
00:03:25.327 --> 00:03:30.493
She is now the mother of Solomon. She is now a woman inside the palace.
00:03:30.603 --> 00:03:34.957
She is now a royal mother with memory, wisdom, and political awareness.
00:03:35.224 --> 00:03:40.541
She has seen what palace power can do. She has survived what palace power can take.
00:03:40.867 --> 00:03:46.774
And now she moves within the same place, palace system, to protect the promise
00:03:46.774 --> 00:03:49.133
attached to her son, Solomon.
00:03:49.475 --> 00:03:55.494
This episode is called The Political Matriot because Bathsheba is not passive in 1 Kings 1.
00:03:56.294 --> 00:04:01.823
She is strategic. She listens. She acts. She enters the king's chamber.
00:04:02.182 --> 00:04:06.020
She speaks directly to David. She reminds him of his oath.
00:04:06.345 --> 00:04:12.398
She works in alignment with the prophet Nathan. and her action helped secure Solomon's throne.
00:04:12.746 --> 00:04:17.384
Bathsheba moved from being summoned by power to speaking of power.
00:04:17.727 --> 00:04:19.132
Now that's a major shift.
00:04:19.585 --> 00:04:24.240
So we understand that Bathsheba as a woman, remember she's a black woman,
00:04:24.426 --> 00:04:26.678
that she learned how to work the system,
00:04:27.160 --> 00:04:31.299
that she was placed in. She did not choose David. David chose her,
00:04:31.601 --> 00:04:34.712
and all the consequences that followed was all about David.
00:04:34.991 --> 00:04:39.594
But for some reason, Bathsheba did not leave. Bathsheba stayed.
00:04:39.867 --> 00:04:45.823
And so we'll see a different Bathsheba. We're going to see her as a political monarch.
00:04:46.090 --> 00:04:52.859
So going to be in 1 Kings chapter 1. We're going to walk through verse by verse on this story.
00:04:53.753 --> 00:04:59.093
It's really about Bathsheba, but you know, David is in the story because it's his story too, okay?
00:04:59.540 --> 00:05:04.080
And so we understand the ethnicity of David when I said ethnicity of Bathsheba.
00:05:04.080 --> 00:05:08.040
So I want you to get in that frame of mind of what we're listening to.
00:05:08.040 --> 00:05:11.392
This is black history on mass.
00:05:11.583 --> 00:05:16.738
These characters, we were never thought to see them as anything but white,
00:05:16.936 --> 00:05:21.794
but they are not white characters in the Bible, they are black.
00:05:21.922 --> 00:05:26.740
We learn that they're from hams, shims, right? That's their heritage.
00:05:27.054 --> 00:05:31.870
And we were introduced to the Hittite, which is really, we think about as part of Canaan history.
00:05:32.370 --> 00:05:36.882
Uriah the Hittite came from Hep. Remember, we go all the way back to Genesis,
00:05:37.357 --> 00:05:42.339
the genealogy and we learned that in the beginning. That's why that was so important.
00:05:42.339 --> 00:05:43.610
That's why I spent a lot of time on that.
00:05:43.732 --> 00:05:46.588
So let's talk about 1 Kings 1 through 4.
00:05:46.791 --> 00:05:48.730
Now we're seeing David in a different light.
00:05:49.165 --> 00:05:53.270
David is now old, he's weak, and now his kingdom is vulnerable.
00:05:53.571 --> 00:05:59.057
We know that was going to be a challenge because God already spoke to us about that in 2 Samuel.
00:05:59.382 --> 00:06:04.699
And so his life, because he's getting old, does not change what God has already
00:06:04.699 --> 00:06:06.431
said will happen to his family.
00:06:06.710 --> 00:06:10.164
And so let's go to chapter 1, and we'll read verses 1 through 4.
00:06:10.268 --> 00:06:15.019
And now King David was old and stricken in years, and they covered him with
00:06:15.019 --> 00:06:17.043
clothes, but he got no heat.
00:06:17.397 --> 00:06:21.803
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let thou be sought for thy lord,
00:06:22.052 --> 00:06:23.440
the king, a young virgin,
00:06:23.765 --> 00:06:28.919
and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie
00:06:28.919 --> 00:06:32.635
in thy bosom, that my lord thy king may get heat.
00:06:32.913 --> 00:06:37.569
So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coast of Israel and found
00:06:37.569 --> 00:06:41.731
Abishak, a Shunammite, and brought her before the king.
00:06:42.027 --> 00:06:45.969
The damsel was very fair and cherished the king and ministered to him,
00:06:46.247 --> 00:06:48.053
but the king knew her not.
00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:53.451
So this was a time when David was old and weak. His body couldn't hold any heat.
00:06:53.800 --> 00:06:59.359
They needed somebody warm to keep him warm. But then it ends and says that David
00:06:59.359 --> 00:07:01.219
knew her not. So David was...
00:07:01.742 --> 00:07:06.524
Not having relations with this lady. He was just like a heating pad, right?
00:07:07.737 --> 00:07:13.117
And so now we see that David was old and advanced in years. And so we see this
00:07:13.117 --> 00:07:18.633
episode starts off with David near the end of his life, but he's no longer a strong warrior king.
00:07:18.947 --> 00:07:22.894
He is old. He's physically weak. His body cannot keep him warm.
00:07:23.173 --> 00:07:28.293
His servants bring Eshapashah, the Shunammite, to attend to him.
00:07:28.595 --> 00:07:32.217
But the text makes it clear that David was not intimate with her.
00:07:32.217 --> 00:07:37.250
This detail matters because it shows the kingdom is entering a dangerous season.
00:07:37.558 --> 00:07:43.026
When a king becomes weak and secession is not secure, the palace becomes unstable.
00:07:43.275 --> 00:07:46.764
Ambition rises. Alliances form.
00:07:47.049 --> 00:07:49.644
People begin positioning themselves for power.
00:07:49.963 --> 00:07:54.229
David's weakness creates a political opening, but in that opening,
00:07:54.438 --> 00:07:59.611
Anonijah moves. When leadership becomes weak and succession is unclear,
00:07:59.860 --> 00:08:02.088
power struggles often rise quickly.
00:08:02.483 --> 00:08:07.107
The palace was not peaceful. It was vulnerable. One thing I'm learning about
00:08:07.107 --> 00:08:10.957
the Bible is I read the Old Testament, New Testament. It's not my first time
00:08:10.957 --> 00:08:14.430
reading about these biblical characters who are really real characters.
00:08:14.819 --> 00:08:19.909
It's my first time taking the time to understand the background of the story.
00:08:20.037 --> 00:08:22.807
Because we can say I read the Bible through in a year, but that don't really
00:08:22.807 --> 00:08:27.026
mean anything. if you don't take time and understand what was happening at that time.
00:08:27.305 --> 00:08:32.177
So we understand that for some reason, David is getting old,
00:08:32.177 --> 00:08:37.632
but he is not yet appointed an heir to the throne. That's interesting, right?
00:08:37.760 --> 00:08:44.018
But yet they're still allowing him to have these vulnerable women around him for heat.
00:08:44.256 --> 00:08:49.393
He said he didn't know this lady, but why that lady, right? Why her?
00:08:49.765 --> 00:08:54.647
I mean, so things in a Bible. It says, well, they wanted someone to keep them warm. Hello. Hello.
00:08:55.093 --> 00:09:02.272
What was Bathsheba doing? How come Bathsheba was not keeping her husband warm?
00:09:02.545 --> 00:09:06.858
Isn't that interesting to say? So they were not sharing the same bed.
00:09:07.125 --> 00:09:11.554
Now, I read the story before and never thought about that, but that comes to mind today.
00:09:11.874 --> 00:09:15.914
Why? Because we put on our thinking patch so we can pay attention, right?
00:09:16.146 --> 00:09:21.254
And we have the mind of Christ on so that we can understand some things that we didn't see before.
00:09:21.370 --> 00:09:25.794
We also have a sound mind, right? A powerful mind. a disciplined mind,
00:09:26.131 --> 00:09:30.066
that God is allowed to show us things that we just kind of brush over.
00:09:30.270 --> 00:09:33.783
So I want you to understand that, that this is interesting. This is something
00:09:33.783 --> 00:09:39.691
that we come on with, that Sheba already gave birth to Solomon.
00:09:39.993 --> 00:09:42.803
We don't know that backstory. There's a lot of story about David.
00:09:42.803 --> 00:09:45.856
David's story carries a lot of parts of the Bible.
00:09:46.181 --> 00:09:51.231
But for the sake of this episode, all we know is David is cold. David is old.
00:09:51.481 --> 00:09:54.796
And David is vulnerable. The kingdom is vulnerable.
00:09:55.144 --> 00:09:59.919
But yet they hire somebody to keep him warm. Interesting. Let's keep going.
00:10:00.192 --> 00:10:05.573
1 Kings 1, we're going to go read verses 5 through 10. This is about Adonijah.
00:10:07.953 --> 00:10:13.729
When Adonijah, the son of Haggith, exalted himself, saying, I will be king,
00:10:13.961 --> 00:10:18.338
and he prepared him chariots and horsemen and 15 men to run before him.
00:10:18.605 --> 00:10:25.013
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, why has that done so?
00:10:25.333 --> 00:10:30.924
He also was a very goodly man and his mother bared him after Absalom.
00:10:31.289 --> 00:10:34.209
So we see here that Bathsheba was not the mother.
00:10:35.115 --> 00:10:38.998
Adonijah or Absalom. Those were two different women.
00:10:39.283 --> 00:10:44.368
So now you can understand why she might not be keeping David warm in his old
00:10:44.368 --> 00:10:47.218
age because David was still doing these things, right?
00:10:47.555 --> 00:10:50.988
And I'm just talking. I don't know, but we're going to read the Bible as it
00:10:50.988 --> 00:10:53.551
is. And his father was not displeased.
00:10:53.818 --> 00:11:00.714
So Adonijah decides that I'm going to run for king, but David didn't say, no, you're not the king.
00:11:00.934 --> 00:11:03.157
Solomon always was the one for the throne.
00:11:03.483 --> 00:11:08.347
They know that from way, especially with this relationship, because God is creating his lineage.
00:11:09.068 --> 00:11:14.858
These two, Adonijah and Absalom, were not part of Bathsheba's children.
00:11:14.858 --> 00:11:19.475
And he conferred with Joab, the son of Zariah, and with Abathar,
00:11:19.678 --> 00:11:23.301
the priest, and they followed Adonijah and helped him.
00:11:23.667 --> 00:11:29.501
Now, Adonijah, think about it. Here goes Joab. Joab is helping Adonijah become the crown.
00:11:29.768 --> 00:11:36.308
And we got these other people who are taking advantage of David, who is now old and cold.
00:11:36.628 --> 00:11:41.298
But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehida, and Nathan the prophet,
00:11:41.298 --> 00:11:47.519
and Shimei, and Rhea, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
00:11:47.827 --> 00:11:54.182
And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoleth,
00:11:54.472 --> 00:11:59.250
which is by Enrogel, Enrogel, and called all his brethren to...
00:11:59.499 --> 00:12:03.749
The king's son, and all the men to Judah, the king's servant.
00:12:03.900 --> 00:12:08.079
But Nathan, the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon,
00:12:08.335 --> 00:12:11.272
and his brother, he called Nih. Wow.
00:12:11.539 --> 00:12:14.407
So now there's going to be a division in the kingdom.
00:12:14.854 --> 00:12:18.633
I mean, this is like a great soap opera. There's a division in the kingdom.
00:12:18.993 --> 00:12:23.258
But while that division has happened, while David is cold and getting old,
00:12:23.258 --> 00:12:25.494
and he's thinking about being warm.
00:12:26.290 --> 00:12:30.446
Kind of forgot about that he's a king and that if he doesn't say anything,
00:12:30.608 --> 00:12:34.091
then you're going to have other people rising up to take the throne.
00:12:34.358 --> 00:12:41.806
So we see Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, exalted himself saying, I will be king.
00:12:42.038 --> 00:12:47.716
Adonijah was one of David's sons. After the deaths or failures of older sons
00:12:47.716 --> 00:12:53.171
like Anon and Absalom, Adonijah may have believed the throne should be his.
00:12:53.537 --> 00:12:57.804
But the text says something important. Adonijah exhausted himself.
00:12:57.943 --> 00:13:03.074
So that story's about when God put that word on David in 2 Samuel,
00:13:03.405 --> 00:13:08.253
we know that Absalom died. I think he had long hair. He died from hanging from his hair.
00:13:08.496 --> 00:13:12.479
And Amnon, I don't remember how he died, but they weren't around.
00:13:12.693 --> 00:13:19.050
So now we have this fight against Adonijah and Solomon. Solomon hasn't said a word yet, right?
00:13:19.363 --> 00:13:23.816
But Adonijah said, no one's going to say anything. I'm going to go ahead and exalt myself.
00:13:24.158 --> 00:13:28.146
But he was not appointed. He did not receive public confirmation from David.
00:13:28.460 --> 00:13:30.764
He did not wait for prophetic work.
00:13:31.118 --> 00:13:36.894
He declared himself that I will be king. That phrase shows ambition without authorization.
00:13:37.161 --> 00:13:41.968
Adonijah gathers serious horsemen and men to run before him.
00:13:42.270 --> 00:13:44.696
This looked like a public campaign for kingship.
00:13:45.120 --> 00:13:49.485
He also received support from important figures like, guess who, Joab.
00:13:49.694 --> 00:13:52.519
So, you know, Joab might have a little bit of something in his heart.
00:13:52.809 --> 00:13:54.233
Remember, he was part of that.
00:13:54.802 --> 00:13:59.922
That storyline where he was called by David to help kill Uriah.
00:14:00.264 --> 00:14:03.277
So that could be that friction that's happening here.
00:14:03.590 --> 00:14:08.467
And it says, including Joab, the military commander and avatar the priest.
00:14:08.467 --> 00:14:13.787
Now you got the priest, the military commander, choosing the next person to
00:14:13.787 --> 00:14:17.707
be on the throne. And I don't hear God in this one, do you? And so that's what
00:14:17.707 --> 00:14:20.518
makes it serious. The commander and the priest are together.
00:14:20.895 --> 00:14:22.863
This is not just a family disagreement.
00:14:23.263 --> 00:14:28.970
This is an attempt at a royal takeover. Adonijah is building a coalition.
00:14:29.319 --> 00:14:34.897
But notice he does not invite Nathan the prophet, prophet Benaiah the mighty
00:14:34.897 --> 00:14:39.105
man, Solomon and other royal, royal, other people.
00:14:40.062 --> 00:14:45.260
Other people loyal to David and his plan. This matters because Adonijah knows
00:14:45.260 --> 00:14:47.074
exactly who may oppose him.
00:14:47.458 --> 00:14:49.540
He gathers the people who supported
00:14:49.540 --> 00:14:53.691
his ambition and leaves out the people connected to Solomon's future.
00:14:54.010 --> 00:14:58.654
So Adonijah knows that Solomon is next in line, right? This is not,
00:14:58.904 --> 00:15:03.873
this is Black history story. So now we're getting how this story started to unfold.
00:15:04.157 --> 00:15:06.845
So Ananias did not simply desire the throne.
00:15:07.170 --> 00:15:15.018
He organized to take the throne. This was not confusion. This was a political move by Ananias.
00:15:15.671 --> 00:15:19.839
Let's go to 1 Kings 1, 11 through 14. Let's see what happens next.
00:15:19.943 --> 00:15:23.798
Wherefore Nathan spoke unto Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon,
00:15:24.065 --> 00:15:27.751
saying, Has thou not heard that Ananias, the son of Haggith,
00:15:28.134 --> 00:15:30.990
does reign? And David, our Lord, knoweth it not?
00:15:31.327 --> 00:15:36.930
Now, therefore, let me, I pray, give thee counsel that thou mayest save thy
00:15:36.930 --> 00:15:39.761
own life and the life of thy son Solomon.
00:15:40.104 --> 00:15:45.670
Go and get thee into the king David and say unto him, Does not thou,
00:15:45.670 --> 00:15:48.140
my lord, O king, swear unto,
00:15:48.720 --> 00:15:53.141
thy handmaiden, saying, Or surely Solomon, thy son, should reign after me,
00:15:53.402 --> 00:15:55.387
and he should sit up on the throne?
00:15:57.030 --> 00:16:03.240
Why does Anijah reign? behold while thou yet talkest there with the king I also
00:16:03.240 --> 00:16:09.081
will come in after thee and confirm thy words let's do a little commentary on.
00:16:09.535 --> 00:16:16.089
Adonijah. The little meaning of Adonijah is Hebrew, is that my Lord is God.
00:16:16.425 --> 00:16:21.429
Adonijah was the fourth son of David and apparently was the oldest living son
00:16:21.778 --> 00:16:24.831
because it was assumed that he would be the next king.
00:16:25.162 --> 00:16:29.255
There were certain protocols around the African-American people who believed
00:16:29.255 --> 00:16:33.242
their king or chiefs represented the presence of God.
00:16:33.550 --> 00:16:40.092
The image and the work of the human rulers tend to be readily projected onto the image of God.
00:16:40.383 --> 00:16:47.584
So people in these high positions, for instance, David represented what? God in those positions.
00:16:47.886 --> 00:16:51.468
That's why God said to David, you know, this displeased me.
00:16:51.770 --> 00:16:54.585
This displeased me. This is not why I put you in the throne.
00:16:54.788 --> 00:16:59.835
Now we have some drama in the family where Adonijah is saying,
00:16:59.835 --> 00:17:04.525
if David ain't saying nothing, that I'm going to be the king.
00:17:04.525 --> 00:17:10.833
So now Ananijah is actually sitting on the throne, being king because nobody told him to move.
00:17:10.973 --> 00:17:15.593
So we see here also that Nathan talked to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon.
00:17:15.907 --> 00:17:18.531
This is one of the most important things that Bathsheba does.
00:17:18.885 --> 00:17:22.845
That Nathan, the prophet, goes to Bathsheba. Nathan is a prophet.
00:17:22.845 --> 00:17:26.733
He knows the lineage. He knows how the story is supposed to turn out.
00:17:27.076 --> 00:17:31.464
But he goes to Bathsheba and asks Bathsheba to do some things.
00:17:31.749 --> 00:17:34.988
Nathan could have gone directly to David alone, but he does not.
00:17:35.267 --> 00:17:40.195
He goes to Bathsheba first. He recognizes that she has a role in this moment.
00:17:40.671 --> 00:17:43.921
He understands that Bathsheba is not just Solomon's mother.
00:17:44.153 --> 00:17:49.528
She is a political actor with access to the king and direct stake in the promise.
00:17:49.755 --> 00:17:58.207
Nathan tells Bathsheba that Adonijah has become king and David knows it not. So he's playing king.
00:17:58.508 --> 00:18:02.421
Then he gives her counsel to save her own life, the life of Solomon.
00:18:02.740 --> 00:18:06.614
Once he took kingship, you know, next thing that's going to happen is Adonijah
00:18:06.614 --> 00:18:11.104
is going to put out an order, a death warrant for the mom, for everybody who's
00:18:11.104 --> 00:18:13.480
going to maybe take that throne from him.
00:18:13.770 --> 00:18:16.585
So Nathan says, here, I have this plan for you.
00:18:16.910 --> 00:18:19.331
This tells us that danger is not symbolic.
00:18:19.685 --> 00:18:24.004
It was about life and death. In ancient royal succession, when one son took
00:18:24.004 --> 00:18:27.841
the throne, rival heirs of their mother could become targets.
00:18:28.184 --> 00:18:32.247
He's not the king yet, but he's all comfortable thinking he is going to be the king.
00:18:32.566 --> 00:18:37.861
But if he decides to secure the throne, Solomon and Bathsheba would be seen as threats.
00:18:38.116 --> 00:18:42.811
So Nathan was, his warning was urgent. This was not gossip.
00:18:43.200 --> 00:18:48.732
This was survival. So Nathan tells Bathsheba to go to David and remind him of his oath.
00:18:49.040 --> 00:18:53.864
Did you not swear to your servant saying, Solomon, your son should reign after
00:18:53.864 --> 00:18:56.447
me and he should sit on my throne?
00:18:56.923 --> 00:19:00.534
Then Nathan says, he will come in after him and confirm the word.
00:19:00.534 --> 00:19:04.064
So you go in first and you ask this question. And when you finish asking that
00:19:04.064 --> 00:19:05.854
question, then I'm going to walk
00:19:05.854 --> 00:19:10.884
in And then I'm going to confirm what you just said. This is strategy.
00:19:11.244 --> 00:19:15.394
Bathsheba will speak first. Nathan will confirm second. And together they will
00:19:15.394 --> 00:19:17.850
present a united witness before David.
00:19:18.152 --> 00:19:22.404
David, Nathan approached showing that Bathsheba had influence.
00:19:22.404 --> 00:19:25.420
Why? Because he still had access to the king.
00:19:25.733 --> 00:19:29.013
You know, she still had political influence over the king.
00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:34.882
Remember, it was her idea to get this other girl to keep her husband warm.
00:19:35.154 --> 00:19:40.204
She was not for God in the palace. She was necessary in this crisis.
00:19:40.442 --> 00:19:44.330
Let's go to verse 15 to 21.
00:19:44.755 --> 00:19:49.486
This is when Bathsheba enters into the king's chamber. Remember, David is still king.
00:19:49.851 --> 00:19:55.952
Whether he's old and cold, he is still the ruler that God had in place for this season.
00:19:56.231 --> 00:20:00.862
And it says in verse 15, And Bathsheba went in unto the king,
00:20:01.106 --> 00:20:03.807
unto the shamers, and the king was very old.
00:20:03.940 --> 00:20:07.429
And Ashabah the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
00:20:07.765 --> 00:20:12.078
And Bathsheba bowed and did obeisance unto the king.
00:20:12.346 --> 00:20:18.272
And the king said, what will thou do? So she came in, not as a wife, but as a queen.
00:20:18.544 --> 00:20:20.606
We know about Esther, what that protocol was.
00:20:20.896 --> 00:20:27.996
So she entered in and she did obedience. So she bowed. She did the courtesy of David being the king.
00:20:28.443 --> 00:20:33.070
And Abshah, the lady who was keeping her warm, was making sure that he was comfortable.
00:20:33.289 --> 00:20:37.758
And it says then, But Sheba bowed and did obeisance unto the king.
00:20:37.990 --> 00:20:44.003
Verse 17, And she said unto him, My lord, thou swear by the lord thy God unto
00:20:44.003 --> 00:20:48.416
thy handmaid, saying, Surely Solomon thy son should reign after me,
00:20:48.712 --> 00:20:50.923
and he should sit upon my throne.
00:20:51.202 --> 00:20:54.546
Wow. And now behold, Adonijah reign.
00:20:54.871 --> 00:20:59.903
And now my lord the king, thou knowest it not. And he has slain oxen and fat
00:20:59.903 --> 00:21:01.953
cattle and sheep in abundance.
00:21:07.358 --> 00:21:11.555
Of the host. But Solomon, my servant, has not been called.
00:21:11.851 --> 00:21:15.590
And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee,
00:21:15.915 --> 00:21:21.494
that thou should tell them who should sit on the throne of my lord and king after him.
00:21:21.743 --> 00:21:25.557
Otherwise, it should come to pass that my lord, the king, should sleep with
00:21:25.557 --> 00:21:30.758
his fathers, that I and my son Solomon should be counted offenders.
00:21:30.869 --> 00:21:33.063
So Bathsheba walked in.
00:21:33.272 --> 00:21:37.468
She's saying, You don't even know what's going on, and I'm here to tell you what's going on.
00:21:37.746 --> 00:21:40.817
She was really direct. She came into the chamber.
00:21:41.107 --> 00:21:46.097
She didn't hesitate. She bows and pays respect to the king, but she also speaks
00:21:46.097 --> 00:21:48.155
to him clearly and directly.
00:21:48.480 --> 00:21:52.566
This is a different Bathsheba than the one we saw in 2 Samuel 11.
00:21:52.921 --> 00:22:00.850
In 2 Samuel, David sent for Bathsheba. In 1st King, Bathsheba goes to the king, which is King David.
00:22:01.140 --> 00:22:06.527
In 2 Samuel, king's power moved towards her in 1 Kings. She moves with purpose
00:22:06.893 --> 00:22:08.437
into the king's presence.
00:22:08.681 --> 00:22:11.676
That contrast is powerful. So we see a change.
00:22:12.151 --> 00:22:15.901
In Bathsheba. Bathsheba reminds David of his oath.
00:22:16.215 --> 00:22:20.151
She tells him that Adonijah has made himself king.
00:22:20.470 --> 00:22:24.713
She tells him that the people are waiting to see what David will do,
00:22:24.963 --> 00:22:26.490
and she names the danger.
00:22:26.815 --> 00:22:33.612
If David does not ask, she and Solomon will be counted as offenders. That's a powerful word.
00:22:33.926 --> 00:22:36.206
Bathsheba understands what's at stake.
00:22:36.525 --> 00:22:42.621
She knows if Adonijah claims to see her son's life may be at risk,
00:22:42.859 --> 00:22:47.131
her own life may be at risk, and their future may be erased.
00:22:47.340 --> 00:22:52.426
So she speaks like a mother, she speaks like a survivor, and she speaks as a
00:22:52.426 --> 00:22:57.606
woman who understands what is happening and how this power structure works.
00:22:57.606 --> 00:22:59.577
She does not beg without a strategy.
00:23:00.570 --> 00:23:07.495
She makes it clear. David must publicly name Solomon as successor before Adonijah
00:23:07.849 --> 00:23:09.353
claims become permanent.
00:23:09.596 --> 00:23:14.832
Bathsheba is not silent here. She is informed, she's strategic, and she is courageous.
00:23:15.041 --> 00:23:20.643
She steps into the palace crisis to protect her son Solomon's future.
00:23:21.172 --> 00:23:24.986
Let's see what happens. What does Nathan does? Remember, I already had a plan,
00:23:24.986 --> 00:23:27.714
so we're just peeking into the window.
00:23:28.416 --> 00:23:33.250
And listening. And we have the script right here. And so verses 22 to 27.
00:23:33.541 --> 00:23:38.429
And lo, while she will yet talk with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
00:23:38.754 --> 00:23:43.793
And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he has come
00:23:43.793 --> 00:23:48.500
in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
00:23:48.825 --> 00:23:53.593
And Nathan said, My lord, O king, as thou said, Adonijah should reign after
00:23:53.593 --> 00:23:56.134
me, and he should sit upon my throne.
00:23:56.407 --> 00:24:01.133
For he has gone down this day and has slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in
00:24:01.133 --> 00:24:07.403
abundance and has called all the king's son and the captains of the host and abathard the priest.
00:24:07.403 --> 00:24:13.613
And behold, they eat and drink before him and say, God save king Adonijah.
00:24:13.613 --> 00:24:17.863
So they're getting set up for the big old coronation party. Verse 26.
00:24:17.863 --> 00:24:23.475
But me, even me, thy servant and Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoshaphat
00:24:23.754 --> 00:24:26.935
and thy servant Solomon has not been called.
00:24:27.167 --> 00:24:33.109
Is this thing done by my Lord, the king, and thou should not show it unto thy servant?
00:24:33.541 --> 00:24:37.418
Who should sit on the throne of my lord, the king, after him?
00:24:37.772 --> 00:24:42.146
Think about that. So you got, they're asking, he really, Nathan really said
00:24:42.146 --> 00:24:44.622
the same thing that Bathsheba did.
00:24:44.767 --> 00:24:47.635
So if David didn't hear it the first king, David didn't hear it the first time,
00:24:47.907 --> 00:24:49.730
he might have heard it the second time.
00:24:50.084 --> 00:24:53.172
But Nathan enters in exactly as he had planned it.
00:24:53.497 --> 00:24:56.761
This confirms that Bathsheba and Nathan, they're working together.
00:24:57.079 --> 00:25:01.677
Wow, they are not acting random. They have this coordinated approach.
00:25:01.938 --> 00:25:06.216
Nathan bowed before David and asked whether David has declared Anijah king.
00:25:06.216 --> 00:25:08.892
That's interesting. Asked, is this something you're doing?
00:25:09.084 --> 00:25:13.200
He lists the people Ananias invited and the people he excluded.
00:25:13.542 --> 00:25:18.157
He makes it clear that this action was done without David's known approval.
00:25:18.437 --> 00:25:24.526
Nathan wrote it's important because he gives a prophetic and political weight to Bathsheba.
00:25:24.659 --> 00:25:28.600
Bathsheba speaks from the position of mother and cleanly figure.
00:25:28.872 --> 00:25:30.898
Nathan speaks from the position of prophet.
00:25:31.258 --> 00:25:36.354
Together they confront the secession together. Its alliance is powerful.
00:25:36.656 --> 00:25:41.326
Bathsheba's voice is not isolated. Nathan's prophetic authority strengthens
00:25:41.326 --> 00:25:43.895
the truth she has already brought.
00:25:44.243 --> 00:25:45.646
So they're working together. Remember,
00:25:45.646 --> 00:25:49.886
Nathan was the one that prophesied against David after Bathsheba.
00:25:50.526 --> 00:25:54.019
So he didn't even know Bathsheba, but he probably knew of her.
00:25:54.356 --> 00:25:58.586
But look how they're working together. So Bathsheba and Nathan shows the power
00:25:58.586 --> 00:26:04.224
of wise alliance. Survival requires discernment, timing, and trusted voices.
00:26:04.485 --> 00:26:08.293
Think about this, that they're working together to save the throng.
00:26:08.804 --> 00:26:15.590
Because Adonijah is already setting up a party. Let's go to 1 Kings 28-31 and see what happens here.
00:26:15.730 --> 00:26:21.858
Then King David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the
00:26:21.858 --> 00:26:24.292
king's presence and stood before the king.
00:26:24.617 --> 00:26:29.128
And the king swore and said, As the Lord liveth, that has redeemed my soul out
00:26:29.128 --> 00:26:32.400
of all distress, even as I swore unto thee
00:26:32.621 --> 00:26:37.908
by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Or surely Solomon thy son shall reign after
00:26:37.908 --> 00:26:41.114
me, and he should sit upon my throne and my stead.
00:26:41.328 --> 00:26:44.707
Even so will I certainly do this day.
00:26:45.015 --> 00:26:48.968
Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and did reverence to the king
00:26:48.968 --> 00:26:52.962
and said, let my Lord King David live forever.
00:26:53.182 --> 00:26:56.955
So Nathan, Bathsheba walked in first, said what she had to say.
00:26:57.199 --> 00:27:01.338
She walked out or sat in the back and then he said, where's Bathsheba?
00:27:01.495 --> 00:27:04.978
After Bathsheba and Nathan speak, David responds. King David responds.
00:27:05.309 --> 00:27:09.628
He goes Bathsheba back into his presence and make this declaration.
00:27:09.906 --> 00:27:15.158
He swears by the Lord who redeems his soul out of every adversity that Solomon
00:27:15.158 --> 00:27:19.444
will reign after him and sit on his throne that very day.
00:27:19.723 --> 00:27:22.846
This is the moment when the crisis turns.
00:27:23.148 --> 00:27:29.288
David does not simply comfort Bathsheba. He acts, confirms Solomon publicly.
00:27:29.636 --> 00:27:35.795
Faith in Bathsheba bows with her face to the ground and honors the king saying,
00:27:35.999 --> 00:27:38.791
Let my Lord King David live forever.
00:27:38.895 --> 00:27:44.253
This is powerful because this is how Bathsheba, he listened to her,
00:27:44.480 --> 00:27:46.360
right? He honored her word.
00:27:46.633 --> 00:27:48.775
He remembered what he had said to her.
00:27:49.054 --> 00:27:52.874
And so that moment that Bathsheba's accession as a political maturator,
00:27:53.199 --> 00:27:58.580
she enters the king's chamber with urgency, reminded David of his own.
00:27:59.068 --> 00:28:02.808
Exposed the danger and helped move David into action.
00:28:02.808 --> 00:28:06.620
Solomon's throne is not secure because Bathsheba stays silent.
00:28:06.869 --> 00:28:10.962
It's secure because she says something. She reminded David,
00:28:11.483 --> 00:28:15.901
of his oath from what God told him. But Bathsheba at this time,
00:28:16.185 --> 00:28:19.530
because you know, you got a man that really loves the Lord. He made a mistake.
00:28:20.110 --> 00:28:23.980
He made an error. He got right back before the Lord and he repented,
00:28:23.980 --> 00:28:25.844
but he still had earthy consequences.
00:28:26.128 --> 00:28:30.710
So David had access to God, right? And so he says that just that moment,
00:28:30.710 --> 00:28:36.140
how she mentioned it, Nathan mentioned it, and then God must've said,
00:28:36.140 --> 00:28:38.853
yep, confirm that word in him.
00:28:39.184 --> 00:28:43.050
And then David spoke and he remembered Right. That's interesting.
00:28:43.050 --> 00:28:46.486
You got to understand that he was a man after God's heart.
00:28:46.771 --> 00:28:50.921
So yeah, he made some errors, but he still had that insight,
00:28:51.223 --> 00:28:52.947
that answer. He remembered.
00:28:53.145 --> 00:28:57.335
And that was because Bathsheba was told that Solomon would reign.
00:28:57.696 --> 00:29:01.608
Let's go to 1 Kings. Let's go to verses 32 to 40.
00:29:01.753 --> 00:29:06.830
And King David said, call me Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Abaniah,
00:29:06.830 --> 00:29:12.585
the son of Jehoah, and they came before the king. My gosh. So the king summoned
00:29:12.887 --> 00:29:15.546
the people who were hanging out with Adonijah.
00:29:15.854 --> 00:29:20.470
The king also said unto them, take with you the servants of your Lord and call
00:29:20.470 --> 00:29:26.420
Solomon, my son, to ride upon my own mule and bring him down to Gihon.
00:29:26.420 --> 00:29:30.103
And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet annoy him there,
00:29:30.352 --> 00:29:35.629
king over Israel, and blow ye the trumpet and say, God saved the king Solomon.
00:29:36.041 --> 00:29:41.347
Then he shall come up after him, and he should come and sit upon my throne,
00:29:41.573 --> 00:29:43.901
for he should be king in my stead.
00:29:44.203 --> 00:29:49.021
And I have appointed him to be the ruler over Israel and over Judah.
00:29:49.294 --> 00:29:53.800
And Benaiah, the son of Joheda, answered the king and said, Amen,
00:29:53.800 --> 00:29:57.206
the Lord God of my lord, the king says so too.
00:29:57.479 --> 00:30:02.512
And the Lord has been with my lord the king, even so he be with Solomon.
00:30:02.820 --> 00:30:06.111
And make his throne greater than the throne of my Lord David.
00:30:06.832 --> 00:30:08.586
That's the priest talking. So
00:30:08.586 --> 00:30:12.660
Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah the son of Jehoshaphat
00:30:12.979 --> 00:30:18.106
and the Sherathites and the Pelathites went down and called Solomon to ride
00:30:18.106 --> 00:30:22.300
upon King David's mule and brought him to Jehon.
00:30:22.555 --> 00:30:27.954
And Zadok the priest took a horn of oil out of the tabernacle and anointed Solomon.
00:30:28.244 --> 00:30:33.242
And they blew the trumpet. And all the people said, God save King Solomon. And.
00:30:33.735 --> 00:30:39.274
And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes and rejoiced
00:30:39.274 --> 00:30:44.109
with great joy, so that the earth rent the sound of him. Excuse me.
00:30:44.288 --> 00:30:47.824
So Zadok the priest, remember, these are people that were over there with Adonijah.
00:30:48.464 --> 00:30:51.928
But guess who summoned them? They all got summoned to the king's presence.
00:30:52.340 --> 00:30:55.514
And he said, this is what we're going to do. David gives the instruction.
00:30:55.514 --> 00:31:00.021
He didn't wait a day. He didn't give 24 hours. He didn't need any sleep.
00:31:00.298 --> 00:31:06.464
He knew right away what he needed to do to secure Solomon's throne. So he gave him the plan.
00:31:06.736 --> 00:31:10.719
David gives the instructions. Solomon is to ride on David's own mule,
00:31:10.997 --> 00:31:17.308
be taken to Jihad and anointed king by Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet.
00:31:17.648 --> 00:31:22.356
This public ceremony matters because royal power had to be seen and recognized.
00:31:22.629 --> 00:31:26.443
Solomon riding David's mule showed royal endorsement.
00:31:26.785 --> 00:31:32.155
The anointing shows sacred confirmation. and the trumpet and public proclamation
00:31:32.468 --> 00:31:34.564
shows national announcement.
00:31:34.912 --> 00:31:38.500
The people shout, long live King Solomon.
00:31:38.866 --> 00:31:44.038
The city rejoices, and this public answers to Adonijah's private ambition.
00:31:44.305 --> 00:31:50.388
Adonijah tried to exalt himself in private, but God made Solomon's in public.
00:31:50.673 --> 00:31:55.828
Wow. So Solomon was publicly anointed. Adonijah gathered supporters on feet.
00:31:56.246 --> 00:32:00.367
While he's doing that, in the background, Solomon receives David's command,
00:32:00.675 --> 00:32:05.191
priestly anointing, prophetic confirmation, and public recognition.
00:32:05.319 --> 00:32:09.353
Bathsheba intervention helped trigger this official transfer.
00:32:09.644 --> 00:32:15.614
Adonijah promoted himself, but Solomon was appointed, anointed,
00:32:15.614 --> 00:32:16.858
and publicly confirmed.
00:32:17.218 --> 00:32:19.662
This is the difference between ambition and ambition.
00:32:20.132 --> 00:32:24.393
And assignment. Wow, there's so much more. You got to hear what happens next.
00:32:24.764 --> 00:32:27.742
Oh my gosh, there were some things that happened. This is a good story.
00:32:27.742 --> 00:32:29.995
I want to read from verse 40.
00:32:30.314 --> 00:32:33.562
And the people came and they piped with joy. Adonijah and all the guests that
00:32:33.562 --> 00:32:36.961
were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating.
00:32:37.268 --> 00:32:42.255
And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise
00:32:42.528 --> 00:32:44.548
and the city being in an uproar?
00:32:44.821 --> 00:32:47.812
And while he guest spoke, behold, Jonathan, the son of Abahar,
00:32:47.812 --> 00:32:53.392
the priest came, and Adonijah said unto him, Come in, for thou art a valiant
00:32:53.392 --> 00:32:55.078
man, bring his good tiding.
00:32:55.368 --> 00:33:02.009
And Jonathan answered and said unto Adonijah, Really, our Lord King David has made Solomon king.
00:33:02.305 --> 00:33:07.302
And the king has sent with him Zodak the priest, and Nathan the prophet,
00:33:07.302 --> 00:33:11.431
and Benaiah the son of Jehoda, and the Sherathites and the Pelathites,
00:33:11.733 --> 00:33:15.063
and that they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule.
00:33:15.168 --> 00:33:19.684
And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king of Gihon,
00:33:19.986 --> 00:33:24.450
and they are come up from thence rejoicing. So the city rang again.
00:33:24.781 --> 00:33:26.679
This is the noise that you have heard.
00:33:27.033 --> 00:33:30.502
And also Solomon is seated on the throne of the kingdom. Moreover,
00:33:30.502 --> 00:33:34.492
the king's servants came to bless our Lord King David, saying,
00:33:34.492 --> 00:33:40.849
God, make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make thy throne greater than thy throne.
00:33:41.197 --> 00:33:45.482
And the king bowed himself upon the bed. And also, thus says the king,
00:33:45.807 --> 00:33:51.172
blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which has given one to sit on my throne this
00:33:51.172 --> 00:33:53.672
day, my eyes even seeing it.
00:33:53.963 --> 00:34:00.075
And all the guests that were with Adonijah was afraid and rose up and went every man their way.
00:34:00.290 --> 00:34:04.092
So they ended that party really quick because they over there worshiping the
00:34:04.092 --> 00:34:07.628
wrong king and that can get you killed in this type of environment.
00:34:07.999 --> 00:34:14.644
And Adonijah feared because of Solomon and rose and went and caught hold of the horns of the altar.
00:34:14.905 --> 00:34:19.515
So he ran into and grabbed the horns of the altar because he knew he was wrong.
00:34:19.846 --> 00:34:23.687
And let's see what happened. Adonijah feared Solomon and he went and grabbed
00:34:23.687 --> 00:34:26.477
the horns of the altar. And it was told Solomon saying, behold,
00:34:26.477 --> 00:34:28.298
Adonijah fears King Solomon.
00:34:28.593 --> 00:34:31.917
For lo, he had caught hold of the horns of the altar saying,
00:34:31.917 --> 00:34:36.558
let King Solomon swear to me this day that he will not slay a servant with a sword.
00:34:36.674 --> 00:34:40.787
And Solomon said, if he will show himself a worthy man, there should not be
00:34:40.787 --> 00:34:43.466
a hair on him fall to the earth.
00:34:43.745 --> 00:34:46.711
But if wickedness should be found in him, he should die.
00:34:46.989 --> 00:34:50.547
So King Solomon sent and they brought him down from the altar.
00:34:50.547 --> 00:34:52.946
And he came and bowed himself to King Solomon.
00:34:53.329 --> 00:34:57.777
And Solomon said unto him, go to thine house. So Solomon said,
00:34:57.777 --> 00:34:58.629
I'm not going to kill you.
00:34:59.281 --> 00:35:03.183
I'm not going to kill you. I want to see if you're really going to be honest,
00:35:03.183 --> 00:35:06.665
if you're going to keep the peace, or you're going to still keep the drama going.
00:35:07.135 --> 00:35:10.273
He said, I need to see him. And he saw him. He said, I want you to go to your
00:35:10.273 --> 00:35:13.636
house. But Adonijah wasn't done, so you got to finish reading that story.
00:35:13.961 --> 00:35:18.378
But it's not about Adonijah today. It's about Queen Bathsheba.
00:35:18.616 --> 00:35:21.797
Okay, so Adonijah, you know, we pointed himself.
00:35:22.128 --> 00:35:26.363
So let's close this out. We see here in episode three that Bathsheba's story
00:35:26.363 --> 00:35:30.998
changed direction in the eyes of us and what we see in her.
00:35:31.114 --> 00:35:34.383
As we listen to this story, we start to see her in a different light.
00:35:34.563 --> 00:35:37.477
Many people only know Bathsheba from 2 Samuel 11.
00:35:37.854 --> 00:35:40.878
They remember the roof, the bath, the pregnancy, and David's sin.
00:35:41.302 --> 00:35:46.161
But 1 King Juan shows Bathsheba differently.
00:35:46.498 --> 00:35:49.655
She is not voiceless. She is not erased. She is not powerless.
00:35:49.998 --> 00:35:55.907
She is a mother protecting her son. She is a royal woman navigating palace politics.
00:35:56.279 --> 00:36:02.853
She is a survivor who learned how power moves. This is why her story must not
00:36:02.853 --> 00:36:04.493
just stop at the rooftop.
00:36:04.824 --> 00:36:09.233
But she was already experienced damage of palace power. She knew what it meant
00:36:09.233 --> 00:36:11.150
to be pulled into the king's world.
00:36:11.540 --> 00:36:15.563
She knew what it meant to lose a husband. She knew what it meant to lose a child.
00:36:15.842 --> 00:36:21.409
She knew what it meant to live inside a royal house where decisions could mean life or death.
00:36:21.652 --> 00:36:25.251
So Nathan, when Nathan comes to her, she understands the urgency.
00:36:25.478 --> 00:36:27.730
This is not merely about Solomon's getting a title.
00:36:28.090 --> 00:36:33.515
It's about survival. If Adonijah becomes king, Bathsheba and Solomon will be
00:36:33.515 --> 00:36:35.869
treated as enemies of the throne.
00:36:36.136 --> 00:36:41.389
Nacon even tells her that his counsel meant to save her life and Solomon's life.
00:36:41.720 --> 00:36:45.813
That means Bathsheba was not being dramatic. She was being realistic.
00:36:46.167 --> 00:36:51.867
Her wisdom is shown in her timing. She doesn't wait until Adonijah is fully established.
00:36:52.181 --> 00:36:57.355
She acts while David is still alive and still has authority to confirm Solomon.
00:36:57.355 --> 00:36:59.565
Her courage is shown in her speech.
00:36:59.785 --> 00:37:03.477
She enters the king's chamber and she tells David the truth.
00:37:03.785 --> 00:37:07.525
Her strategy is shown in her alliance. She works with Nathan,
00:37:07.525 --> 00:37:13.728
allowing her testimony and his prophetic confirmation to reinforce one another.
00:37:13.995 --> 00:37:17.977
Her motherhood is shown in her mission. She works with Nathan.
00:37:18.192 --> 00:37:22.565
Wow. Her mother is shown her mission. She is not just trying to win power for
00:37:22.565 --> 00:37:27.474
herself. She's protecting the son connected to David's oath in God's plan.
00:37:27.741 --> 00:37:31.235
So God knows how to put people in the wrong place at the wrong time,
00:37:31.235 --> 00:37:36.535
but then turn that around for good because she knows he knows the heart of his
00:37:36.535 --> 00:37:38.678
people and those in his lineage.
00:37:38.799 --> 00:37:41.406
So we see Bathsheba in a different role.
00:37:41.638 --> 00:37:45.133
She's not just a woman that David took. She's not just a widow.
00:37:45.440 --> 00:37:52.415
She's not just a grieving mother. We see her now as a political matriarch who
00:37:52.415 --> 00:37:54.363
helps secure the throne.
00:37:54.653 --> 00:37:57.817
Let's talk about the characters that were involved in ethnicity here.
00:37:58.136 --> 00:38:02.014
Bathsheba appeared to be an Israelite woman. We understood that the last.
00:38:02.425 --> 00:38:07.050
Of episodes that throughout scripture does not directly identify her tribe.
00:38:07.201 --> 00:38:10.829
By episode three, she's no longer described in relation to Uriah.
00:38:11.166 --> 00:38:15.675
She is specifically called the mother of Solomon. See, it's shifted.
00:38:15.675 --> 00:38:21.232
This matters because in the royal world, the mother of the king held important influence.
00:38:21.621 --> 00:38:26.775
Bathsheba's role is moving towards what will later be seen more clearly in 1
00:38:26.775 --> 00:38:33.730
Kings 2.9, where Solomon honors her with the throne in his right hand. We'll get to that next.
00:38:34.003 --> 00:38:38.589
David, we know, is an Israelite from the tribe of Judah. He is an Asian king.
00:38:39.153 --> 00:38:43.665
Whose house is now facing secession and civility. But we know David Rowland's
00:38:43.665 --> 00:38:46.605
episode is different from the first two episodes.
00:38:46.855 --> 00:38:51.813
In this episode, David must use his remaining authority to secure proper secession.
00:38:52.109 --> 00:38:56.742
David, final responsibility is to make clear who will sit on the throne.
00:38:57.020 --> 00:39:00.425
We here introduce Solomon. Now, Solomon is not a white man either.
00:39:00.425 --> 00:39:02.570
We see him all the time with light skin.
00:39:02.918 --> 00:39:07.084
But Solomon is the son of David and Bathsheba, who are what? They are not white.
00:39:07.438 --> 00:39:13.266
He is Israelite through David's royal line, and it's connected to the tribe of Judah through David.
00:39:13.603 --> 00:39:19.148
His name is connected to peace. The Hebrew name Solomon is related to Shalom, meaning peace.
00:39:19.396 --> 00:39:24.587
That is significant because Solomon rise comes after a household full of conflict,
00:39:24.930 --> 00:39:26.224
bloodshed, and rivalry.
00:39:26.346 --> 00:39:29.254
Solomon's throne is not just a family promotion.
00:39:29.556 --> 00:39:34.920
It's a part of David's continuation of his royal line. Nathan,
00:39:35.245 --> 00:39:36.730
we don't really know what his ethnicity is.
00:39:37.056 --> 00:39:42.275
Nathan is a prophet who confronted David in 2 Samuel 12, and now he partners
00:39:42.275 --> 00:39:44.155
with Bathsheba in 1 Kings 1.
00:39:44.486 --> 00:39:47.825
That's important because Nathan was present when David's story,
00:39:47.825 --> 00:39:49.913
when truth had to confront Seth.
00:39:50.180 --> 00:39:55.178
Now Nathan is present again when truth must confront political deception.
00:39:55.411 --> 00:39:58.214
Nathan represents prophetic accountability.
00:39:58.557 --> 00:40:03.115
He does not disappear after David's confession. He remains connected to the
00:40:03.115 --> 00:40:07.060
integrity of the royal house. So he was a prophet to the king.
00:40:07.298 --> 00:40:11.356
Adonijah was one of David's sons, but was a son of Haggith.
00:40:11.646 --> 00:40:16.105
He exiled himself and declared that he would be king. His action mirrored earlier
00:40:16.105 --> 00:40:20.945
royal rebellion, especially the ambition seen in Absalom's story.
00:40:21.195 --> 00:40:25.895
Adonijah gathers serious horsemen and supporters, creating an image of kingship
00:40:25.895 --> 00:40:28.213
before receiving the proper confirmation.
00:40:28.533 --> 00:40:30.611
This story shows a danger of self.
00:40:31.139 --> 00:40:37.043
Exaltation. We see here Job and Abathar. Joab, David's military commander,
00:40:37.298 --> 00:40:41.129
supports Adonijah. Abathar, the priests, also support him.
00:40:41.449 --> 00:40:44.734
Their involvement makes Adonijah attempt more serious.
00:40:45.030 --> 00:40:49.703
This is not a minor family disagreement. It includes military and religious
00:40:49.703 --> 00:40:51.853
support. You know, that's the most dangerous.
00:40:52.153 --> 00:40:56.263
Military and religious support. However, Nathan, the prophet,
00:40:56.263 --> 00:41:01.413
Zadok the priest, but Naiah and others remain outside of Adeliah's circle and
00:41:01.413 --> 00:41:04.824
becomes part of Solomon's confirmation.
00:41:05.120 --> 00:41:10.623
We see here that there were two different priests, one for David and one against David.
00:41:10.623 --> 00:41:15.623
And when this got out, you know, David was like, okay, now I see who my friends
00:41:15.623 --> 00:41:20.585
are. We saw that Bathsheba in this particular episode spoke more
00:41:21.007 --> 00:41:24.531
now than she did in the beginning of her trauma.
00:41:25.651 --> 00:41:29.761
We see here that Nathan and Bathsheba seem to have some type of relationship
00:41:30.028 --> 00:41:35.566
of trust. And not just trust, but that trust was in God and Nathan is a confirmation
00:41:35.566 --> 00:41:38.689
of what God had told David and Bathsheba.
00:41:38.817 --> 00:41:43.496
And we see here that Ananias said, I will be king. And that was not the right thing.
00:41:44.056 --> 00:41:50.311
He promoted himself. And then he was afraid because he knows what happens when you go before us.
00:41:50.439 --> 00:41:52.970
Pretty much we call treason in our time.
00:41:53.277 --> 00:41:58.826
You know, I see the promotion of David, of Solomon, he's riding on David's mule
00:41:59.157 --> 00:42:00.904
and that shows royal succession.
00:42:01.148 --> 00:42:06.233
And Gihan, when we talk about Gihan, he was in charge of making a public announcement.
00:42:06.564 --> 00:42:10.128
And so everything about what happened with Solomon wasn't hidden.
00:42:10.320 --> 00:42:12.949
It was actually revealed perfectly.
00:42:13.216 --> 00:42:19.866
And we love that, but she was no longer quiet, that she acted fast before Adonijah
00:42:19.866 --> 00:42:24.722
could establish his royal priesthood instead of Solomon.
00:42:25.053 --> 00:42:32.035
This teaches us the importance of timing. Some battles are lost because people wait too long to speak.
00:42:32.326 --> 00:42:37.301
I love this because we see that Bathsheba is taking her place.
00:42:37.493 --> 00:42:43.333
She's no longer considered the woman on the roof, the woman David summoned, the widow of Uriah.
00:42:43.558 --> 00:42:46.885
No, she's now known as the mother of Solomon.
00:42:47.210 --> 00:42:52.069
And she was able to speak up for her, speak up for her family.
00:42:52.208 --> 00:42:54.490
And that's what makes it so wise.
00:42:54.763 --> 00:42:57.101
She walked in wisdom, not in silence.
00:42:57.616 --> 00:43:01.623
She was no longer trying to survive. She was just protecting her family.
00:43:01.831 --> 00:43:04.700
She was not passive. So we're going to learn.
00:43:05.403 --> 00:43:11.931
And our final episode of Bathsheba is that her legacy is in the lineage of Jesus Christ.
00:43:12.192 --> 00:43:17.676
She moves from palace to survivor to queen mother, where Matthew genealogy refuses
00:43:17.676 --> 00:43:21.678
to erase the pain, but she becomes part of the promise.
00:43:21.956 --> 00:43:27.802
We now know that Bathsheba moved from being summoned by the crown to help securing the crown.
00:43:28.052 --> 00:43:30.356
So God knows exactly what he's doing.
00:43:30.612 --> 00:43:33.736
So if your life looks like a hot mess right now, don't worry.
00:43:33.736 --> 00:43:36.753
God is still ironing out the wrinkles.
00:43:36.875 --> 00:43:42.489
And guess what? You are in a position of restoration. Just don't give up.
00:43:42.767 --> 00:43:46.266
Bathsheba at any time could have gave up. Bathsheba at any time.
00:43:46.266 --> 00:43:48.021
But Bathsheba said, I'm going to honor the king.
00:43:48.346 --> 00:43:53.796
When we learn how to honor our man, you see how God gave her discernment on
00:43:53.796 --> 00:43:56.065
what to do next. She didn't get that randomly.
00:43:56.402 --> 00:43:59.546
It wasn't like an idea. She was in the right place, right time.
00:43:59.546 --> 00:44:01.394
And she knew exactly what to do.
00:44:02.116 --> 00:44:06.056
So we have to be that way. and not take it personal. If God said you're still
00:44:06.056 --> 00:44:08.441
breathing, God's still got something for you to do.
00:44:08.778 --> 00:44:11.605
Don't care what your past looked like. Don't care what your future is.
00:44:12.017 --> 00:44:15.419
You're in the middle of. As long as you keep having your ears open to God,
00:44:15.762 --> 00:44:17.544
He can rescue you. He can deliver you.
00:44:17.886 --> 00:44:21.786
And He can bring restoration to you and your family. We thank you,
00:44:21.786 --> 00:44:25.073
Jesus. And so this has been your host, Connie Morris.
00:44:25.421 --> 00:44:30.907
This is the Diary of a Black Woman podcast. And I'll see you on episode four. Goodbye.
00:44:31.203 --> 00:44:34.953
Before we close today, I don't wanna take for granted that everyone listening
00:44:35.226 --> 00:44:36.648
knows Jesus personally.
00:44:37.037 --> 00:44:42.424
If you have listened to this episode or any other episodes and felt something stirring in your heart.
00:44:42.858 --> 00:44:46.562
Maybe you know about God, but you're not sure you truly know Him.
00:44:46.742 --> 00:44:50.945
Maybe you grew up in church, walked away, got hurt, became tired,
00:44:51.334 --> 00:44:53.663
and never fully surrendered your life to Jesus.
00:44:54.063 --> 00:44:58.473
I want you to know this. God loves you. He has not forgotten you.
00:44:58.473 --> 00:45:00.434
He is not waiting to shame you.
00:45:00.590 --> 00:45:03.534
He is calling you home.
00:45:03.743 --> 00:45:07.748
The Bible says in Romans 10, 9, if you declare with your mouth,
00:45:07.968 --> 00:45:15.231
Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
00:45:15.416 --> 00:45:17.848
Salvation is not about being perfect.
00:45:18.104 --> 00:45:20.977
It's about surrendering to the one who is perfect.
00:45:21.285 --> 00:45:28.704
Jesus died for your sins, rose again, and made a way for you to be forgiven, restored, and made new.
00:45:28.913 --> 00:45:32.332
So right where you are, you can pray this prayer with me.
00:45:32.489 --> 00:45:37.661
Lord Jesus, I come to you today with an open heart. I believe you are the son of God.
00:45:38.045 --> 00:45:45.348
I believe you died on the cross for my sins, and I believe that God raised you from the dead today.
00:45:45.742 --> 00:45:50.374
I confess that I need you. I repent of my sins. I ask you to forgive me,
00:45:50.374 --> 00:45:53.472
cleanse me, and make me brand new.
00:45:53.676 --> 00:45:55.597
Jesus, come into my heart.
00:45:55.916 --> 00:45:59.704
Be my Lord, my Savior, my Redeemer, and my King.
00:46:00.084 --> 00:46:05.053
I surrender my life to you. I give you my past, my present, and my future.
00:46:05.332 --> 00:46:09.256
Teach me how to walk with you. Fill me with your Holy Spirit.
00:46:09.529 --> 00:46:13.484
Lead me in truth, healing, obedience, and love.
00:46:13.804 --> 00:46:18.637
From this day forward, I belong to you. In Jesus' name, amen.
00:46:18.765 --> 00:46:23.214
If you pray that prayer from your heart, I want you to know that heaven has
00:46:23.214 --> 00:46:25.220
heard you. This is not the end.
00:46:25.551 --> 00:46:30.439
This is only the beginning of your walk with Jesus. Find a Bible-believing church,
00:46:30.613 --> 00:46:35.791
begin reading the word of God, pray daily, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow.
00:46:36.069 --> 00:46:40.818
God is not looking for perfection from you. He is inviting you into relationship,
00:46:41.126 --> 00:46:43.355
transformation, and eternal life.
00:46:43.540 --> 00:46:48.237
Through Jesus Christ. And remember, you are loved, you are not forgotten,
00:46:48.376 --> 00:46:50.964
and God still has a purpose for your life.
00:46:51.295 --> 00:46:54.180
Thank you for listening to the Diary of a Black Woman podcast.
00:46:54.383 --> 00:46:58.841
Until next time, keep walking in truth, faith, and freedom.
00:47:09.788 --> 00:47:12.964
Family, thank you for spending time with me today.
00:47:13.242 --> 00:47:16.899
To every woman listening who has ever felt hidden, overlooked,
00:47:16.899 --> 00:47:19.367
or pushed aside, hear me clearly.
00:47:19.622 --> 00:47:24.167
God has not forgotten you, and neither have I.
00:47:24.556 --> 00:47:29.322
Now let's go before the Lord and close this out with a word from God,
00:47:29.740 --> 00:47:34.169
because someone out there needs this reminder today.
00:47:34.442 --> 00:47:38.424
Jeremiah 29, 11, verses 11 through 14.
00:47:38.860 --> 00:47:43.709
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you
00:47:43.709 --> 00:47:47.614
and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
00:47:47.904 --> 00:47:52.658
Then when you call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you,
00:47:52.914 --> 00:47:58.219
you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
00:47:58.219 --> 00:48:04.286
I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and bring you back from captivity.
00:48:04.663 --> 00:48:10.629
Father God, we thank you for your word, that it is true, that it is living, that it is for us.
00:48:10.780 --> 00:48:15.819
You said you know the plans you have for us, plans to prosper us and not to
00:48:15.819 --> 00:48:18.733
harm us, plans to give us hope and a future.
00:48:19.017 --> 00:48:23.325
So today we receive that, not just in our minds, but in our hearts.
00:48:23.551 --> 00:48:24.857
When we feel overlooked.
00:48:25.368 --> 00:48:31.254
Remind us, you still see us. When we feel forgotten, remind us, you still have a plan.
00:48:31.504 --> 00:48:35.318
And when we feel hidden, remind us, you are still working.
00:48:35.602 --> 00:48:38.760
Your word says that when we call on you, you will listen.
00:48:39.097 --> 00:48:42.284
So we call on you now. Hear us. Strengthen us.
00:48:42.539 --> 00:48:46.876
Guide us. Help us to seek you with our whole heart, not halfway,
00:48:47.073 --> 00:48:49.035
not sometimes, but fully.
00:48:49.325 --> 00:48:55.751
And as we seek you, let us find you in every season, in every place, even the hidden mind.
00:48:55.879 --> 00:49:01.642
Restore what was lost, renew what feels broken, and remind us that nothing in
00:49:01.642 --> 00:49:04.169
our lives is wasted in your hand.
00:49:04.575 --> 00:49:10.762
Lord, we trust you, we believe you, and we stand on your word. In Jesus' name, amen.
00:49:11.075 --> 00:49:15.144
This is Diary of a Black Woman podcast, and I'm your host, Connie Morris,
00:49:15.422 --> 00:49:18.169
and I'll see you on the next episode.
