Church Chronicles: Reclaiming Easter: Celebrating Resurrection with Purpose

I'm sorry, we're not wrapping it up. We got one more episode. So welcome to Church Chronicles with Diary of a Black Woman. I'm your host, Connie Morris, and I'm so glad you've joined me as we continue our series on Easter. In today's episode, we'll discuss how we can reclaim Easter, navigating pagan influences, and celebrating the true resurrection. This conversation is about setting aside distractions and reclaiming Easter as a time of authentic worship centered on Jesus' resurrection.

0:47 Romans 6.4 reads from the NIV, we were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. The resurrection of Christ is the defining moment of our faith. It signifies victory over sin and death and offers new life. However, if. We're honest, many of our Easter traditions don't reflect the significance of this powerful truth. So let's reflect on how we can align our celebrations to fully honor Jesus.

1:31 Number one, understanding the symbols and their origins. The egg and the bunny are commonly associated with Easter. We covered that in the last two episodes, but their origins lie in pagan fertility celebrations. These symbols were introduced as part of the blending of Christians and pagan traditions. While many of us grew up with these customs, it's essential to ask if they genuinely point us to Jesus. And I can say no, and maybe you can say yes, but we say what? We give you information, understanding the symbols and their origins. Does eggs and the bunny point you to Jesus?

2:14 1 Peter 1, 15-16 from NIV. But just as he who called you is holy, so he is holy in all you do. For it is written, be ye holy because I am holy. Our worship should be set apart and reflect God's holiness. The question you ask yourself is, do the traditions we observe help us focus on Jesus, or do they distract us from the resurrection? Those are just questions you ask yourself. Am I focusing on Jesus, or am I distracted? Number two, the call to separate from cultural practices.

2:55 2 Corinthians 6.17, the Bible calls us to come out from among them and be separate. Separation doesn't mean rejecting joy or celebration. It means ensuring that we celebrate. Our celebration honors God. By choosing to focus on truth of the resurrection, we testify to the power of Christ's victory over sin. Excuse me. Get a drink of water here. Practical steps for Christ-centered Easter. You want to always focus on worship. Begin Easter celebration, or what we call here Resurrection Sunday celebration, with prayer, praise, and scripture reading.

3:38 Share the resurrection story. It is about Jesus. It is about him. He's alive, right? So read the resurrection and counseling the gospel with as, With family and friends. And then three, create faith-based traditions. Replace egg hunts with activities that point to Jesus, such as resurrection scavenger hunts that focus on the scripture. Excuse me. Use scripture-based symbols, incorporating symbols like the empty cross or empty tombs as reminders of Jesus' resurrection. So also about all this is the saying is like making it about Jesus, Make it about his resurrection.

4:19 Make him about the tomb is empty. So how can you make Easter celebration more meaningful and focused on Christ? That's something you do, create new memories for your family and even for you. How can I make this resurrection day more about Jesus? Number three, you want to share the good news. It is about him, right? It's not about the eggs, not about the bunny, the chocolate bunnies they sell. Well, Easter provides, Resurrection Day provides an incredible opportunity to share the gospel. When we remove distractions and focus on Jesus, our celebration becomes powerful testimonies.

5:00 Whether through conversations, social gatherings, or acts of worship, we can use this time to point others to Christ. Matthew 28, 6-7 from the NIV reads, He is not here. He has risen. Just as he said, come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, he has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. The angel was clear. Jesus' resurrection is something to be shared. I love that. He is not here. He has risen from the dead.

5:41 So we know from this story in Matthew 28, verse 6-7, that Jesus is alive. And so Resurrection Day is about Jesus being alive. It's not about eggs. It's not about bunnies. It's about Jesus being alive. So by reclaiming Easter, removing unnecessary distractions, what are those unnecessary distractions? Distractions that take you away from the focus on Jesus, that we can make it a time of a true reflection and worship of Jesus. Amen.

6:23 The resurrection isn't just a historical event. It's a reminder that we have a new life in Christ and a call to live that truth out every day. He's just not risen from the dead. He's alive right now and he's living on the inside of us. God is not dead. He is alive. That is something to celebrate. That shows us that we have a future. We have a present. Things are great in our lives because our God is not dead. He's not an idol that can't breathe, can't talk. We have a God that's alive.

7:03 Amen. So it is something to celebrate. So this week, take some time to evaluate how you celebrate this particular day, Whether you call it Resurrection Day or whether you call it Easter, what kind of traditions are you going to leave behind? What changes can you make to ensure that this is Christ-centered? How can you share the message of resurrection with someone who needs to hear it? That's powerful, right? How can you share the story? How can you share the story? Usually on this particular day, people make delicious dinners. Even having a large dinner and inviting a friend over and sharing your story about Christ would be powerful.

We don't want to leave people. We always want to walk with grace. You know, we want to give people time to just, this is why I just don't kind of give you a lot of heavy information, just enough information to make you think, but to draw you back to God. That's all the whole purpose of this podcast is to give you information and to always draw you back to God. Sometimes it's hard truths, you know, but it's real.
